Dota 2 Heroes: Every Hero Guide by Role and Attribute
Dota 2 has one of the most diverse hero rosters in all of gaming — over 124 playable characters, each with unique abilities, playstyles, and roles. Whether you are brand new to the game or a returning player looking to branch out, knowing which hero fits your playstyle is the first step toward climbing MMR.
This hub collects every Dota 2 hero guide published on TeamSmurf, organized by attribute (Strength, Agility, Universal) and by primary role. Use it as your starting point. Every guide covers abilities, item builds by rank, laning tips, counters, and rank-specific climbing advice. New guides are added regularly as we work through the full 124-hero roster.

What Are Dota 2 Heroes?
In Dota 2, a hero is the character you control for the entire match. Every hero has four abilities — three regular skills and one ultimate — plus a set of base stats that define their early strength. Before the match starts, both teams take turns banning and picking heroes in a draft phase, making hero knowledge one of the most impactful skills you can develop.
Heroes are divided into three primary attributes: Strength, Agility, and Universal. Your hero primary attribute determines how much bonus damage each stat point gives. Beyond attributes, heroes are classified by the five in-game roles — carry (pos 1), mid (pos 2), offlaner (pos 3), soft support (pos 4), and hard support (pos 5). Understanding how Dota 2 roles work before locking in a hero pool is one of the highest-leverage things a new player can do.

Strength Heroes
Strength heroes gain bonus damage primarily from their Strength stat. They tend to be tanky, melee-focused brawlers and initiators who use raw durability to survive team fights. Strength is the most common attribute for offlaners, though many Strength heroes also excel as carries or supports.

The majority of position 1 carries in Dota 2 are Agility heroes, though several excel in the mid lane or as flex picks. If you want to be the player who ends games with the highest damage, an Agility carry is your starting point. For the strongest carries in the current patch, see our MMR climbing guide.

Universal Heroes
Universal heroes gain +0.6 damage from every attribute point — Strength, Agility, and Intelligence all contribute equally to their attack damage. This makes Universal heroes extremely versatile: they benefit from any stat item and can fill multiple roles depending on the lineup. Many of the game most complex heroes, including Invoker, Rubick, and Tinker, fall into this category. To see how Universal heroes are performing in the meta right now, check the current tier list.

Heroes by Role
If you do not know your preferred attribute yet, picking by role is the most practical starting point. Each of the five positions has a distinct playstyle and win condition. Below are the top recommended heroes per role for players who want to climb MMR. For full role theory, read our complete Dota 2 roles guide.
Carry (Position 1)
The carry is responsible for late-game damage. You farm during the early and mid game, then take over team fights with big item spikes. Carries require the most farm and generally play the safe lane. See the 7.41f carry guide for current item builds and laning tips.
- Anti-Mage — high skill ceiling, dominant vs intelligence-heavy lineups. Read the Anti-Mage guide.
- Phantom Assassin — bursty, beginner-friendly, snowballs fast. Read the Phantom Assassin guide.
- Juggernaut — safe and forgiving, good into most lineups
- Wraith King — simplest carry in the game, impossible to one-shot
- Terrorblade — one of the best late-game heroes if your team can protect the farm
- Medusa — near-unkillable at max farm, best in slow-paced games
Want to know which carry heroes are strongest right now? Our best heroes to climb MMR guide breaks down the current tier list by role. You can also read our MMR boosting guide or check is Dota 2 boosting safe if you want to accelerate your rank while you refine your hero pool.
Mid (Position 2)
The mid laner plays 1v1 in the center lane and is responsible for tempo — creating pressure across the map during the mid game. Mid heroes tend to have strong spell kits that let them roam and kill. The 7.41f mid lane guide covers current matchup priorities and rune timings.
- Shadow Fiend — punishing and high-damage, rewards mechanical skill
- Tinker — one of the highest map-control heroes in the game. Read the Tinker guide.
- Queen of Pain — one of the best mid heroes for roaming and ganking
- Invoker — hardest hero in the game, highest skill ceiling
- Storm Spirit — mobile and slippery, scales well into the mid game
- Void Spirit — evasive and punishing with strong escape options
Offlaner (Position 3)
The offlaner plays the hard lane (against the enemy carry) and is responsible for disruption, space creation, and team fight initiation. Most offlaners are tanky Strength heroes who can absorb damage or catch enemies out of position. See the 7.41f offlane guide for draft priority and power spike timings.
- Axe — the textbook offlaner, counter-helix punishes melee carries
- Mars — high burst, strong initiation, good into almost any lineup
- Centaur Warrunner — unkillable early, great initiation with Stampede
- Lone Druid — flexible offlaner or carry with extremely high damage output. Read the Lone Druid guide.
- Tidehunter — best teamfight ultimate in the game, high floor
- Bristleback — impossible to burst down, punishes right-clickers
Support (Positions 4 and 5)
Supports buy wards, smoke, and utility items. Position 4 (soft support) roams and creates vision, while position 5 (hard support) stays in the safe lane to protect the carry in the early game. Both roles require map awareness and good positioning rather than farm. Read the 7.41f support guide for hero priority and warding basics.
- Rubick — the skill-expression support, steals enemy spells for massive outplays. Read the Rubick guide.
- Elder Titan — one of the highest-impact supports at all MMR ranges. Read the Elder Titan guide.
- Earthshaker — best support initiator, Echo Slam teamfight potential. Read the Earthshaker guide.
- Ogre Magi — one of the easiest supports, high natural durability. Read the Ogre Magi guide.
- Abaddon — can play either support or carry, the most forgiving hero in the game. Read the Abaddon guide.
- Crystal Maiden — best hard support for beginners, reliable stun
- Lion — double-stun combo, straightforward and powerful

Frequently Asked Questions
Dota 2 currently has 124 playable heroes as of patch 7.41f. Valve releases new heroes periodically — typically 2-3 per year — so the roster continues to grow. Every hero is free to play with no heroes locked behind a paywall.
Wraith King, Ogre Magi, Abaddon, and Dragon Knight are the most beginner-friendly heroes. They have straightforward kits, forgiving stats, and clear win conditions. Wraith King in particular is recommended for carry players because his passive Reincarnation lets you survive mistakes that would kill other heroes outright. See the easiest heroes for every role for a full breakdown.
Strength heroes gain +2 bonus damage per Strength point above base. Agility heroes gain +2 bonus damage per Agility point above base. Universal heroes gain +0.6 damage from every attribute point (Strength, Agility, and Intelligence together), making them balanced and highly versatile. The attribute type also affects how well a hero scales with certain items.
Read that hero guide (linked in the tables above) and focus on three things: (1) your last-hit efficiency in the laning phase, (2) your ability timing and combo execution, and (3) knowing when to fight versus when to farm. After every game, review one key decision point — did you use your ultimate at the right time, and did you have the right items for that game state? For accelerated improvement, consider 1-on-1 coaching from our Immortal coaches.
The best heroes for climbing MMR change with each patch. Our best heroes to climb MMR guide is updated each major patch with the current top picks per role. In general, heroes with simple mechanics and strong snowball potential — like Phantom Assassin, Wraith King, and Ogre Magi — tend to be reliable MMR grinders at most bracket ranges.
Our most banned heroes at every rank (2026 data) article breaks down ban rates by MMR bracket. Knowing what gets banned at your rank helps you identify which heroes have outsized impact — and tells you which heroes you should be picking before the enemy team bans them away.
