Dota 2 Rune Spawn Times 2026: Every Rune, When and Where It Appears

Dota 2 rune spawn locations on the map showing river power rune spots and jungle bounty rune areas

Every rune in Dota 2 has an exact spawn time, a fixed location, and a mechanic that rewards players who know the schedule by heart. Miss a bounty rune twice in a row and you are down real gold. Miss a wisdom rune at 28 minutes and your whole team loses over 1,000 XP combined. This post is the complete reference: every rune type, exact spawn times, locations, and what each power rune does — verified for patch 7.41f as of September 2026.

If you want the strategic playbook for wisdom rune specifically, read our deep-dive on controlling wisdom runes and the free XP most teams ignore. For the full gold economy breakdown including how bounty rune values fit into your overall income, see our Dota 2 economy guide. This post covers the mechanics only — spawn times, locations, and what each rune does.

Quick Reference: Every Rune Spawn Schedule

This table gives you the complete snapshot at a glance. All times are from game clock zero. Verified for patch 7.41f.

Rune Type First Spawn Interval Location Despawns?
Bounty 0:00 Every 4 minutes Both jungle sides (2 per side) No — stacks
Water 2:00 2:00 and 4:00 only River power rune spots Yes — on next spawn
Power 6:00 Every 2 minutes One of two river spots (random) Yes — on next spawn
Wisdom 7:00 Every 7 minutes Left and right map edges No — stacks
Lotus (pool) 3:00 (first fruit) 1 per 3 minutes per pool West and east map edges No — pools hold up to 6

The most important separation to remember: bounty and wisdom runes never disappear. Power runes and water runes do. A missed power rune at 8:00 is gone for good when the 10:00 rune spawns.

Bounty Runes: Gold on a 4-Minute Clock

Bounty runes are the most reliable and consistent source of rune gold in the game. Every hero on the team that picks one up gets gold — not just the hero who walks over it. That makes coordinated bounty rune control genuinely worth significant gold for the whole team.

Spawn Schedule

At 0:00, four bounty runes spawn simultaneously: two at the dedicated bounty rune spots in each jungle, and two at the river power rune spots. This gives both teams a clean opening rush. After that, bounty runes spawn every 4 minutes (4:00, 8:00, 12:00 and so on) exclusively at the jungle spots — two on the Radiant side and two on the Dire side.

Locations

  • Radiant side: Two spots in the Radiant jungle, roughly near the small and medium camp clusters on the southeast and southwest areas.
  • Dire side: Two spots in the Dire jungle, mirrored on the northwest and northeast areas.
  • 0:00 extra: Two additional runes appear at the river power rune spots only at game start, then never again.

Bounty runes never despawn. If a rune is not collected before the next batch spawns, the new runes appear next to the old ones. In theory you could find a pile of multiple bounty runes if a jungle area is completely ignored.

Gold Values: Scaling by Game Time

Bounty rune gold scales with game time. Each hero on the team gets reliable gold (meaning it cannot be denied or reduced). The formula: 40 gold base, plus 6 gold for each 4-minute interval after the 0:00 spawn.

Spawn Time Gold Per Hero Total (5 heroes)
0:00 40 200
4:00 46 230
8:00 52 260
12:00 58 290
16:00 64 320
20:00 70 350
24:00 76 380
28:00 82 410
32:00 88 440
36:00 94 470
40:00 100 500

A full team sweep of all four bounty runes at 20:00 delivers 350 reliable gold split among five heroes. That is not big-item money, but it is free and consistent — and teams that ignore bounties compound the disadvantage over 25-30 minutes. For the full breakdown of how bounty rune gold fits into your total economy, including stacking and pulling income, see the Dota 2 economy guide.

Tip: In Turbo Mode, bounty rune gold is doubled. The notification message shows standard values, but the actual gold granted is 2x. Worth noting if you use Turbo to practice timing routines.

Storing Bounty Runes in a Bottle

A Bottle in your inventory automatically stores a bounty rune when you pick it up. Storing a bounty rune refills the Bottle to 2 charges (unless it already had more than 2). The stored rune grants gold based on the time at which you activate it — not when you picked it up — so there is a small incentive to bottle early and activate at a slightly later mark.

Wisdom Runes: XP That Scales Hard in Late Game

Wisdom runes are the highest-value resource in the game by late game. At 28 minutes, a single wisdom rune grants 1,120 XP split across two heroes. At 35 minutes it is 1,400 XP. These numbers are comparable to killing a support hero — except there is no risk, no fight required, and both sides have equal access if they show up.

Spawn Schedule

Wisdom runes first spawn at 7:00. After that, one appears every 7 minutes: 14:00, 21:00, 28:00, 35:00, 42:00, and so on. Two wisdom runes spawn simultaneously — one on the left edge of the map and one on the right edge — giving both teams a clear opportunity each cycle.

Like bounty runes, wisdom runes never despawn. If the 7:00 wisdom rune is not picked up by 14:00, the new rune spawns next to the old one. Two uncollected runes sitting there means double XP for whoever finally shows up.

Locations

The two wisdom rune spots are at the far left and far right edges of the map, one closer to the Radiant side and one closer to the Dire side. Both are off the main lanes — you cannot pick them up while walking through the mid lane. They require a deliberate rotation, which is why many lower-bracket teams skip them entirely.

XP Values: Scaling by Game Time

The base XP for a wisdom rune is 280, and each rune cycle adds another 280. So the rune at 7:00 gives 280 XP, the rune at 14:00 gives 560 XP, and so on.

Spawn Time XP Value Who Receives It
7:00 280 XP Picker + lowest-XP ally
14:00 560 XP Picker + lowest-XP ally
21:00 840 XP Picker + lowest-XP ally
28:00 1,120 XP Picker + lowest-XP ally
35:00 1,400 XP Picker + lowest-XP ally
42:00 1,680 XP Picker + lowest-XP ally
49:00 1,960 XP Picker + lowest-XP ally

Who Gets the XP

This mechanic is subtle and important. The hero that physically picks up the wisdom rune receives the full XP. The game then also grants the same XP amount to the hero with the lowest experience on the team. If the lowest-XP hero is the one who picks it up, the second-lowest-XP hero gets it instead.

In practice: a carry or mid player who grabs a wisdom rune at 28:00 for 1,120 XP also boosts their most underleveled support by 1,120 XP simultaneously. This means wisdom runes are particularly powerful when your team has a support who has fallen behind in levels. Running to grab a wisdom rune is rarely a “selfish” play — it always helps two heroes at once.

One exception: Meepo Clones can pick up wisdom runes, and Meepo Prime receives 100% of the XP from a clone pickup. Clones themselves only receive 30% XP from other sources, but not for wisdom runes.

For the full strategic picture — when to send your mid to the wisdom rune versus staying on the wave, how supports should time their rotations, and why most teams leave thousands of XP on the floor — read our detailed guide on wisdom rune control and the free XP most teams ignore.

Hero collecting a glowing power rune from the river in Dota 2

Water Runes: The Early Game Resource Window

Water runes are the simplest rune in the game: they spawn exactly twice, and then they are gone forever. They appear at 2:00 and 4:00 at the river power rune spots. After the 4:00 spawn, water runes stop appearing. If not picked up before the next rune spawns at that spot, they disappear.

What Water Runes Do

A water rune instantly restores 40 Health and 80 Mana to the hero that picks it up. This is a small but meaningful refill during the laning phase — enough to stay on the lane for an extra minute or two without needing to TP back or sacrifice farm. For mana-hungry mid heroes in the first few minutes, the 4:00 water rune can be the difference between having the mana to contest a second-wave fight or not.

Storing a water rune in a Bottle refills it to 2 charges (unless already above 2). In the early game this is a good trade: use the water rune to top off your Bottle before heading to the 6:00 power rune.

Spawn Locations

Water runes spawn at the same two spots as power runes in the river — one closer to the Radiant side and one closer to the Dire side. The mid lane hero from each team has roughly equal access to their nearest river spot. At 2:00, the standard is to pick up the water rune on the way back from buying starting items or after the first creep wave. At 4:00, many mid players detour for the second water rune before the 6:00 power rune spawns.

Power Runes: Spawn Schedule and Rotation Rules

Power runes are the highest-impact single pickup in Dota 2. A well-timed Haste rune for a ganking hero can collapse a lane. A Regeneration rune for a mid hero at 6:00 can extend their laning phase by 5-6 minutes without a trip to base. Knowing not just when power runes spawn but how the rotation works gives you a real advantage.

Spawn Schedule

Power runes start at 6:00 and then spawn every 2 minutes: 8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, and so on throughout the entire game. One rune spawns at one of the two river spots each time — the spot is chosen randomly.

Rotation Rules

Two rules govern which rune spawns next:

  1. No repeat within a cycle: All 7 power rune types must spawn at least once before any of them can repeat. This means if you track which runes have appeared, you can narrow down what is coming next.
  2. No back-to-back repeat: The first rune of a new cycle cannot be the same type as the last rune of the previous cycle. Even after a full rotation resets, the same rune will not appear twice in a row at the transition.

If a power rune is not picked up before the next one spawns, it disappears. There is no stacking — the new rune replaces the old one at the spawn timer, and the old rune is gone.

River Spot Locations

The two power rune spots sit in the river, roughly equidistant from both team bases but with one closer to the Radiant highground and one closer to the Dire highground. Mid heroes from both sides typically have roughly even walk time, which is why rune control is contested. Supports from either side can also rotate to deny or secure the rune, especially on even-minute timings when a kill or gank attempt syncs up.

All 7 Power Rune Effects

Here is what each power rune does, with exact numbers verified for patch 7.41f.

Power Rune Duration Effect
Amplify Damage 45 seconds +80% attack damage, +15% Spell Amplification
Arcane 50 seconds -25% cooldowns, -30% mana costs
Haste 22s base (grows) Movement speed raised to 550 (max cap)
Illusion 75 seconds Spawns 2 illusions: 35% damage dealt, 200%/300% damage taken (melee/ranged)
Invisibility 45 seconds Full invisibility, 25% damage reduction (grows), 2-second fade time
Regeneration 30 seconds 6% max HP and 6% max mana regen per second (drops to 1% when taking damage)
Shield 75 seconds All-damage barrier equal to 50% of max HP

Amplify Damage Rune

Amplify Damage was renamed from Double Damage in patch 7.35 and reworked significantly. It now grants 80% bonus attack damage (down from 100%) plus 15% Spell Amplification. The bonus applies to the hero’s main attack damage — it does not stack with other bonus attack damage sources. This rune is strongest on high-base-damage heroes and on intelligence heroes who want both physical and spell-based burst.

Arcane Rune

Arcane reduces cooldowns by 25% and mana costs by 30% for 50 seconds. The cooldown reduction stacks multiplicatively with other sources. At 50 seconds duration it is one of the longest-lasting power runes. Mid heroes with short-cooldown abilities get enormous value here — think Storm Spirit, Invoker, or Tinker — essentially getting two rotation cycles from one rune window.

Haste Rune

Haste sets your movement speed to 550 — the hard cap — regardless of your current speed or debuffs. Importantly, it grants haste movement, meaning you cannot be slowed below 550 while active. The base duration is 22 seconds and it grows by 3 seconds for each completed rune cycle (every 7-rune rotation). In a long game this rune becomes progressively stronger and harder to outrun. Bottle-storing a Haste rune delays it — useful for catching a hero off guard when they think the threat window has passed.

Illusion Rune

Illusion spawns 2 illusions that deal 35% of your damage. Melee illusions take 200% damage; ranged illusions take 300% damage. The illusions last 75 seconds. On cast, the rune applies a basic dispel, disjoints projectiles, and makes you briefly invulnerable and hidden during the 0.1-second split. Illusions cannot be stacked from multiple Illusion rune pickups — a second pickup spawns new illusions without replacing the first set, but this is rarely relevant.

Invisibility Rune

Invisibility makes you invisible for 45 seconds with a 2-second fade time. During the fade window you can still act freely without breaking it. After the fade, attacking or using an ability breaks the invisibility (at the cast point or attack land). The rune also grants 25% incoming damage reduction that grows by 5% per rune cycle — meaning in a very long game this rune can provide 35%, 40%, or more damage reduction during the invisible period. This is a patch 7.35 addition and makes the Invisibility rune significantly stronger in drawn-out games.

Regeneration Rune

Regeneration restores 6% of your max HP and max mana per second for 30 seconds — enough to fully regenerate both from zero if you are not taking damage. If you take any player damage (including ally damage), the regeneration rate drops to 1% for 3 seconds. Despite the drawback, the base rate is so high that even a 5-second uninterrupted window is roughly 30% of your HP and mana restored. This is the premier laning-phase sustain rune and the reason mid heroes defend the 6:00 rune spot aggressively.

Shield Rune

Shield grants a universal damage barrier equal to 50% of your max HP for 75 seconds. The barrier absorbs all damage types — physical, magical, and pure. It is the longest-lasting power rune in the game, and a high-HP hero (Pudge at 3,000+ HP in the mid game gets a 1,500-damage shield) becomes extremely difficult to kill through it. Multiple Shield runes do not stack — a second pickup refreshes the duration. The barrier depletes before other barrier sources like Refraction or Borrowed Time.

Wisdom rune and lotus pool locations at the map edges in Dota 2

Lotus Pools: The Third-Column Resource

Lotus Pools are neutral buildings introduced in patch 7.33 (New Frontiers) and they function differently from runes — they are structures you channel rather than items you walk over. However, they follow a reliable spawn timer and are treated as a rune-adjacent pickup mechanic in most team schedules.

Location

There are 2 Lotus Pools on the map. They sit at the west and east edges, closer to the north and south corners respectively. Neither pool belongs to Radiant or Dire — any hero from either team can use them. Both pools provide 400-radius vision to both teams at all times, meaning enemies can always see and hear you channeling one.

Spawn Schedule

Each pool passively generates one Healing Lotus every 3 minutes. A pool can hold up to 6 lotuses at once, taking 18 minutes to fill from empty. At game start, the pools are empty, so the first Healing Lotus is available at 3:00 from each pool. If a pool reaches the 6-lotus cap, it stops generating new ones until some are collected.

How to Collect

Right-click a Lotus Pool to begin channeling. The hero plucks one lotus per second after the initial 0.5-second channel start. You collect one lotus per second until either your inventory is full or the pool is empty. Multiple heroes from either team can channel the same pool simultaneously, each working independently — first one there is not guaranteed to get everything.

Only heroes, Tempest Double, and illusions that can cast abilities can initiate the channel. Spirit Bear and other non-hero units cannot collect lotuses.

What Healing Lotus Does

A Healing Lotus instantly restores 125 Health and 125 Mana to the user. It can be self-cast with one click, or cast on an allied hero by holding Ctrl. It can be used on heroes affected by certain status effects (like Shadow Realm). Healing Lotuses can be stored in your inventory and used at any time — they are free items that do not expire. If dropped on the ground, they have an increased pickup range of 300 (versus 150 for regular items).

Stat Value
HP restored per Lotus 125
Mana restored per Lotus 125
Lotus cooldown (after use) 5 seconds
Spawn interval per pool Every 3 minutes
Max lotuses per pool 6
Pools on the map 2
Can target allied heroes? Yes (Ctrl + click)
Watch your inventory: Healing Lotuses do not pluck automatically if your inventory is full. If your hero has 6 items already, the channel animation plays but you receive nothing. Free an inventory slot before channeling — this is one of the most common wasted lotus trips in pubs.

Rune Timing for the Mid Lane

The mid lane is the role most tightly coupled to the rune schedule. A mid player who internalizes the 2:00, 4:00, 6:00 sequence — water rune, water rune, first power rune — and then the 8:00, 10:00… cadence is consistently a step ahead of opponents who are guessing.

The Opening 6 Minutes

The standard mid opening in patch 7.41f:

  • 0:00: Walk to pick up the bounty rune at the closer river spot (spawns here at game start only).
  • 2:00: Detour to the river spot for the 2:00 water rune before returning to lane or after the first wave.
  • 4:00: Collect the 4:00 water rune if you can spare the walk without losing the wave.
  • 6:00: Contest or secure the first power rune. This is the highest-stakes moment of the laning phase — both mid players converge here and a Regeneration rune extends your lane by 5+ minutes, while a Haste rune can instantly translate to a sidelane kill.

For the detailed three-wave wave-management script that sets you up for the 6:00 rune with full resources, read the Dota 2 7.41c mid lane script for the first 3 waves. The rune timing context in that guide explains exactly which creeps to last-hit and which to deny before walking to the river.

Even-Minute vs. Odd-Minute Rotations

Power runes spawn on even minutes. This means the mid lane clock is naturally synced to 2-minute intervals. A mid player who loses the 8:00 rune and does not die or waste resources has at most 2 minutes to recover before the 10:00 rune. Planning TP usage, base trips, and ganks around even-minute timings keeps you in the rune schedule rather than fighting against it.

One common mistake in lower brackets: backing to base at 7:30, refilling Bottle, and walking back to the river — arriving at 8:20 to find the 8:00 rune already picked up or despawned. If you are going to base, do it immediately after the 8:00 rune (not before) or plan to be back at the river by 9:55.

Rune Priority by Role

Not every role has equal access to every rune type. Here is the practical priority framework:

Role Priority Rune Why
Mid (Pos 2) Power rune (every 2 min) Closest to river spots, rune defines laning tempo
Carry (Pos 1) Bounty rune (every 4 min) Jungle bounties closest to safe lane jungle — collect on farm routes
Offlaner (Pos 3) Bounty + Wisdom Bounties in Dire/Radiant jungle offset; wisdom rune rotation fits natural lane downtime
Soft Support (Pos 4) Wisdom rune Level-5 power spike matters enormously for supports; wisdom rune directly addresses the XP deficit versus cores
Hard Support (Pos 5) Wisdom rune + Lotus Pool Lowest-XP hero on the team by design; wisdom rune is built to benefit them. Lotus Pool heals are free sustain without spending gold

The Pos 4 and Pos 5 wisdom rune priority is one of the most under-executed mechanics in the non-pro game. A hard support sitting at the wisdom rune spot at 6:55 gets full XP even if they did nothing but walk there. Two wisdom runes in 14 minutes is 840 XP for the support plus 840 XP to whoever is at the lowest XP on the team — effectively a free level on your most XP-starved heroes every cycle.

If you want to reach the bracket where these mechanics become automatic, our MMR boosting guide covers how professional teams structure rune control into their macro, and how coaching or boosting can accelerate the learning curve. TeamSmurf coaches work on exactly these rotation habits — you can also explore Dota 2 coaching to get personalized feedback on your rune timing decisions from a high-MMR player.

Bottling Runes: Mechanics You Need to Know

Any hero with a Bottle in their inventory automatically stores a rune on pickup. Understanding what storing does to different rune types affects how you use them:

  • Bounty or Water rune in Bottle: Refills Bottle to 2 charges (unless already above 2).
  • Power or Wisdom rune in Bottle: Refills Bottle to 3 charges (full).
  • Storage duration: Runes stored in a Bottle activate automatically after 1.5 minutes. If you are dead when the timer runs out, the rune is destroyed with no effect.
  • Stored runes persist through death: You keep the stored rune in your Bottle if you die, but the 1.5-minute auto-activation timer continues running.
  • Picking up a second rune while storing one: The second rune activates immediately. It does not replace the stored rune.
  • Bottles with runes cannot be dropped or shared.

The practical implication: if you pick up a power rune at 6:00 and bottle it, you have until 7:30 to use it. Mid heroes often deliberately delay the activation — picking up Regen at 6:00, bottling it, fighting the enemy mid at 6:30, then activating mid-fight when both heroes are low. This is called “cooked Regen” in high-level play and it requires confidence in the 1.5-minute window.

What Happens When Two Teams Contest the Same Rune

Rune control is not guaranteed. When two heroes arrive at the same time, the hero who physically walks over the rune picks it up — there is no AoE collection radius advantage. This means micro-dodging, running over the rune spot while the opponent is still approaching, is the actual skill expression.

Denying a rune is possible: a hero from either team can pick up any rune on the map. If the Dire mid player picks up the Radiant-side water rune, they get the water rune and deny it from the Radiant mid. For power runes especially, denying is often as valuable as taking — giving the enemy mid hero a Regeneration rune at 8:00 when you have already won the level 6 fight can flip the game.

Runes can also be destroyed by right-clicking them with an attack command. Destroying a rune denies it without granting any benefit to anyone. Supports sometimes destroy bounty runes they cannot carry in time if the enemy is closer. The destroyed rune does not count as a last hit.

Good rune control — combined with strong mechanics and consistent MMR climbing — is one of the clearest separators between brackets. If you are stuck in a bracket where enemy mids consistently beat you to the rune and snowball from it, read about how Dota 2 boosting works and what to expect, or check the best Dota 2 boosting services to find legitimate support for your climb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q When does the first power rune spawn in Dota 2?
The first power rune spawns at 6:00 game time at one of the two river spots. Before that, only water runes occupy those spots at 2:00 and 4:00. Every subsequent power rune spawns every 2 minutes after that (8:00, 10:00, 12:00, and so on) throughout the entire game. Verified for patch 7.41f.
Q Do bounty runes despawn if no one picks them up?
No. Bounty runes never despawn. If the next batch spawns before the previous ones are collected, the new runes appear next to the old ones. It is possible to find stacks of multiple bounty runes in a completely ignored jungle area. This is distinct from power runes, which despawn when the next power rune spawns.
Q How much XP does the wisdom rune give?
The wisdom rune starts at 280 XP at 7:00 and adds 280 XP per cycle. At 14:00 it gives 560 XP, at 21:00 it gives 840 XP, at 28:00 it gives 1,120 XP, and so on. Two heroes receive the XP simultaneously: the hero who picks it up and the hero with the lowest XP on the team. Both get the full amount — it is not split.
Q How often do lotus pools spawn healing lotuses?
Each of the two Lotus Pools on the map spawns one Healing Lotus every 3 minutes. A pool holds up to 6 lotuses maximum, taking 18 minutes to fill from empty. At game start the pools are empty, so the first lotus is available at 3:00. Each Healing Lotus restores 125 HP and 125 Mana instantly when used.
Q Can you store a power rune in a Bottle and use it later?
Yes. A Bottle in your inventory automatically stores the rune when you pick it up. Stored power runes and wisdom runes refill the Bottle to 3 charges (full). The stored rune auto-activates after 1.5 minutes. If you are dead when the timer runs out, the rune is destroyed and grants nothing. Bottles containing runes cannot be dropped or traded.
Q Does the Haste rune duration change as the game goes on?
Yes. Haste starts at 22 seconds and gains 3 seconds per completed rune cycle (each full rotation through all 7 power rune types). In a long game where multiple cycles complete, the Haste rune duration can grow meaningfully. This was added in patch 7.35. The Invisibility rune similarly gains 5% damage reduction per rune cycle, starting at 25%.
Q Where exactly are the wisdom rune spawn spots?
Wisdom runes spawn at the left and right edges of the map — one on each side. They are deliberately off the main lanes and require a dedicated rotation. Both runes spawn at the same time (7:00, 14:00, etc.) and both sides have symmetrical access. They never despawn, so arriving even a minute or two late still gets you the rune as long as it has not been collected already by a teammate or the enemy.

Win More with Better Macro Habits

Knowing the rune schedule is step one. Executing the rotations consistently in ranked — hitting the 6:00 rune, the 7:00 wisdom rotation, the lotus trip when it is safe — is what separates brackets. TeamSmurf works with you on exactly that: from Dota 2 coaching sessions focused on positioning and macro timing, to MMR boosting if you want to see how high-MMR players execute these decisions in real games.
