Lifestealer Guide 7.41f: Build, Skill Order and Matchups

Lifestealer Dota 2 guide featured art in gold on black

Lifestealer is one of the more reliable carries in public matchmaking, a hero professionals ban nearly three times as often as they pick, and patch 7.41f just nerfed him again. On October 18, 2026, OpenDota’s public-match stats show him at 51.5% across 533,835 picks in the last seven days, 26th of 127 heroes by win rate while the median hero sits at 49.5%. In pro matches the same site counts 27 picks and 74 bans. This Lifestealer guide for 7.41f explains what Valve changed on September 15, 2026, what the hero looks like after the 7.41 rework, and how to build and play him.

The short version: 7.41f is a small patch for Lifestealer. Rage got a one-second cooldown increase at every level, the level 10 movement speed talent dropped from +20 to +15, and the Aghanim’s Scepter version of Infest lost a second on enemy heroes. None of that touches the core of what makes him work, which is Feast, Ghoul Frenzy and a Feast-based sustain engine. The data says he is strongest in the middle ranks and weakest in short games he does not win early.

Below you will find every Lifestealer change since patch 7.39, the current ability numbers from Valve’s data feed, win rates by rank and by game length, a skill order, an item build, matchups and a plain verdict on when to pick him. For the wider context, read our 7.41f patch notes guide and the 7.41f carry guide first.

What Changed for Lifestealer in 7.41f

Lifestealer received three nerfs in 7.41f: a longer Rage cooldown, a weaker level 10 movement speed talent and a shorter Aghanim’s Scepter Infest on enemies. The patch went live on September 15, 2026, and it is still the latest numbered gameplay patch in Valve’s patch list as of October 18. The full text is in Valve’s official 7.41f patch notes.

  • Rage: cooldown increased from 20/19/18/17s to 21/20/19/18s.
  • Infest: Aghanim’s Scepter enemy duration decreased from 5s to 4s.
  • Talent: the level 10 Movement Speed talent decreased from +20 to +15.

Rage is the one that matters. It is both his escape and his answer to disables, and a flat extra second of cooldown at every level means one fewer Rage per long fight. At 18 seconds at max level it is still a short cooldown, so the practical effect is small. The Scepter change only matters if you were already building Aghanim’s Scepter and using Infest as a hero-killing tool.

The 7.41f changes are minor next to the rework that came before them. Pulling every Lifestealer entry from the official data feed since patch 7.39 gives this history. Patches not listed carry no Lifestealer notes in the feed.

PatchLifestealer change
7.39 (May 22, 2025)Base Strength 25 to 23, level 1 damage cut by 2. Feast heal and damage rescaled from 1.5/2/2.5/3% to 2/2.25/2.5/2.75%. Infest creep max HP loss per second cut from 2/1/0% to 1.5/0.75/0%
7.39e (Oct 2, 2025)Hero creeps no longer count as heroes for Feast’s permanent health bonus
7.41 (Mar 24, 2026)The rework. Base damage +10 (level 1 damage 39-45 to 49-55), base attack speed 100 to 120, base movement speed 315 to 320. Ghoul Frenzy becomes an innate worth 5 attack speed per level. Rage adds movement speed. Open Wounds costs 90 mana and always slows by up to 50%. Feast becomes a basic ability and is rescaled to 1.45/2.05/2.65/3.25%. Infest works on Ancients and the Shard is reworked. Four talents are replaced or rebalanced
7.41f (Sep 15, 2026)Rage cooldown +1s at every level. Scepter Infest enemy duration 5s to 4s. Level 10 movement speed talent +20 to +15

The direction is clear if you read the table top to bottom. The 7.39 patch trimmed his lane. The 7.41 rework gave him more damage, more attack speed and a permanent attack speed innate, and turned Feast into a skill you level. The only patch since, 7.41f, shaved the escape and the talent that sped him up. For a full picture of how he fits into the wider meta, see our 7.41f hero tier list.

Lifestealer Infest bursting out of a host creep in Dota 2 7.41f

Is Lifestealer Good Right Now?

Yes. Lifestealer wins 51.5% of public games in 7.41f, 26th of 127 heroes, and he is more consistent across ranks than most carries. OpenDota’s hero stats on October 18, 2026 list 533,835 public picks over the last seven days and 275,176 wins. That makes him the 22nd most picked hero in the game. The daily win rate in the seven-day trend field barely moves, from 51.2% to 51.8%, so this is not a one-day blip. In Turbo, OpenDota lists 163,517 picks and a 50.4% win rate over the same window.

The rank breakdown shows where he is strongest. OpenDota splits hero stats by rank tier.

Ancient86,59252.4%20th of 127
Divine58,90351.2%38th of 127

Data note: positions are among heroes with at least 500 picks in that bracket, and the per-bracket endpoint does not state its time window, so the bracket counts do not add up to the seven-day total. Treat them as a snapshot of public matchmaking, not a controlled test.

Two things stand out. First, the win rate rises with rank until Ancient, from 50.0% in Herald to 52.4%. That is the shape you want from a carry: the better your team understands how to give you space and kills, the more the hero pays out. Second, the Divine number dips a little (51.2%) but he is still in the top third of the hero pool there. Nothing about his data says he is a low-rank trap or a high-rank liability.

How does he compare with other carries? Here are the public win rates for the heroes you are most likely to choose between, plus OpenDota’s professional pick and ban counts.

Lifestealer is not the best public carry on the list, and Wraith King and Spectre beat him by a clear margin (see our Spectre guide for 7.41f). What he offers is a different profile: professionals respect him enough to ban him 74 times against 27 picks, about 2.7 bans for every pick, which puts him 26th of 127 heroes by bans.

Pro data note: OpenDota’s pro counters do not state their window, so use them for relative contest level rather than exact tournament rates. Lifestealer’s 27 picks include 13 wins, which is 48.1%, a small sample.

Lifestealer Kit With Current Numbers

All numbers below come from Valve’s own data feed (the dota2.com hero data endpoint) on October 18, 2026, cross-checked against the 7.41 and 7.41f patch notes. Lifestealer is a Strength hero with 23 base Strength (+2.4 per level), 15 base Agility (+1.9) and 15 base Intelligence (+1.8). He has 320 movement speed, 150 attack range, 3.5 starting armor and 626 health at level 1.

Ghoul Frenzy (innate)Passive attack speed that grows with level5 bonus attack speed per hero level (about +75 at level 15, +150 at level 30)
RageDebuff immunity, 80% magic resistance and bonus movement speed. Valve lists its dispel type as Basic DispelDuration 3/4/5/6s. Mana 80/100/120/140. Cooldown 21/20/19/18s. Movement speed 6/9/12/15% in the feed

FeastAttacks deal and heal a percentage of the target’s max health. Permanent max health for kills1.45/2.05/2.65/3.25% of target max health as both damage and healing. Max health per hero kill 10 (see caveat below), 1 per creep kill. 50% creep deny threshold
InfestEnter a target unit (an ally or a creep), heal while inside and burst out for damageDamage 150/275/400 in 700 radius. Self regen 3/4/5% max HP per second. Health bonus 400/800/1200 and movement speed 15/20/25 listed in the feed. Mana 100/125/150. Cooldown 80/65/50s

Aghanim’s Scepter changes Infest: it lets you enter an enemy hero, and the feed lists a 4 second enemy duration (down from 5 in 7.41f), a 250 cast range and a 20 second cooldown for the Scepter version. The Aghanim’s Shard version, reworked in 7.41, adds a damage over time effect when you consume a creep: enemies take damage equal to 30% of the creep’s remaining health over 3 seconds. It does nothing when you burst out of an enemy hero.

Data caveat: three numbers in the live feed do not match the 7.41 patch text. The feed lists Rage movement speed as 6/9/12/15% while the 7.41 note says 9/12/15/18%. It lists Feast max health per hero kill as 10 while the note says 10/15/20/25. And it lists level 1 damage as 46-52 while the note and OpenDota say 49-55. The feed is Valve’s current data so we quote it, but check the in-game tooltip before you plan around any of those three.

Two details are worth understanding because they decide how the hero plays. First, Feast scales with the enemy’s max health, not yours. At level 4 it deals and heals 3.25% of the target’s max health per hit. Against a 3,000 health hero that is 97.5 damage and 97.5 healing per attack. At level 15 with 195 attack speed (120 base plus 75 from Ghoul Frenzy) and a 1.7 base attack time, he attacks about 1.15 times per second, so Feast alone is around 112 damage and 112 healing per second against that target. Those are our calculations from the feed numbers, and they ignore armor, lifesteal items and misses.

Second, Rage is a real answer to disables, not a damage tool. While it is active he is debuff immune with 80% magic resistance. If you want the full rules on what debuff immunity blocks and what it does not, read our post on invulnerable vs debuff immune vs banished vs ethereal and the one on basic dispel vs strong dispel. Valve’s data also marks Open Wounds as not piercing spell immunity, so a Black King Bar enemy shrugs it off.

Skill Order and Talents

Valve does not publish a standard skill order, so this is our recommendation based on the numbers above. Feast is the stat stick. It gives you the damage and the healing that let you win lane without items, and it levels the same percentage in every fight. Max it first. Rage gets points early for a longer immunity window, and Open Wounds drops from a 30 second cooldown to 15 as you level it.

Hero levelSkillWhy
1FeastLane damage and sustain from the first hit
2RageEscape and a window to take a trade
3FeastSecond level for a bigger percentage
4Open WoundsKill pressure and a slow for ganks
5FeastThird level
6InfestEscape, jungle control and Ancient camps
7FeastMaxed at 3.25%
8 and 9RageLonger immunity window
10TalentSee below
11InfestMore burst and a faster cooldown
12RageMaxed at 6 seconds
13, 14, 16Open WoundsCooldown down to 15 seconds
15TalentSee below
17InfestMaxed at 400 damage and a 50 second cooldown

Talents. The patch notes confirm the level for several choices: the level 10 movement speed talent (+15 now), the level 15 choice between +175 Infest damage and 50 attack speed on an Open Wounds target, and the level 20 Infest target movement speed and health talent (+12%). The feed lists the other talents in pairs that match the standard four tiers, which suggests +4 all attributes at 10, Open Wounds lifesteal at 20, and Feast heal and damage with Rage duration at 25. Treat the level 25 placement as inferred.

  • Level 10: take +4 all attributes in lane if you struggle, and the movement speed talent if you want to chase. After the 7.41f nerf it is a smaller pick than before.
  • Level 15: +175 Infest damage if you gank off creeps, 50 attack speed on Open Wounds targets if you fight in teamfights and want to burst a single carry.
  • Level 20: the Open Wounds lifesteal talent for sustained team fights, Infest target bonus when you use allies as hosts.
  • Level 25: Feast damage and healing for a fast, strong finish, or longer Rage if you keep getting disabled.

Lifestealer Item Build

OpenDota’s item popularity endpoint gives purchase counts by phase for Lifestealer. The sample is small, a few hundred item entries per phase, so read it as a shape, not a proven build.

PhaseMost common purchases in the sample (count)
Starting itemsGauntlets of Strength (275), Quelling Blade (79), Iron Branch (53), Faerie Fire (35), Tango (31), Magic Stick (28)
Early gameBoots (101), Chainmail (100), Phase Boots (97)
Mid gameSacred Relic (97, the Radiance component), Radiance (94), Talisman of Evasion (93), Blade of Alacrity (90), Yasha (72), Armlet of Mordiggian (71)
Late gameAghanim’s Scepter (47), Skull Basher (42), Hyperstone (34), Sange (30), Abyssal Blade (29), Assault Cuirass (28), Manta Style (28)
Lifestealer item build for patch 7.41f in Dota 2

Here is the build we recommend, drawn from that shape and from what the kit rewards. It is our opinion, not a measured result.

  • Start: Gauntlets of Strength (the clear favorite in the sample), a Quelling Blade and a Tango if you are in a safe lane, or Faerie Fire and Iron Branch if you expect a fight.
  • Core: Phase Boots first. They give damage and an active burst of movement speed that suit a melee hero who wants to chase, then Armlet of Mordiggian if the game is going to be fought at close range, or Radiance if you want the farming speed and an AoE damage aura.
  • Fight items: Skull Basher into Abyssal Blade for lockdown, Black King Bar when the enemy has more than two or three targeted disables, and Manta Style if you want to dodge disables and split push.
  • Luxury: Aghanim’s Scepter if you want Infest to become a hero-killing tool, Assault Cuirass to cover armor, Skadi for a slow and the health bonus.

Armlet and Radiance work for different reasons. Armlet’s toggle trades health for a burst of damage and durability, and Feast’s healing on every hit is what covers the drain. Radiance gives you faster farming and area damage in fights, so it suits games where you want to take space and objectives. Our 7.41f item tier list covers how each of these items has fared in the current patch.

Laning and Early Game

Lifestealer is a very safe lane hero after 7.41. The rework gave him 49-55 damage at level 1, 120 base attack speed and a growing attack speed innate, and Feast restores a percentage of the enemy’s health whenever you hit them. That means you can trade with a support or an offlaner and win the exchange on pure sustain, as long as you are not facing a hero who can burst you down or silence you.

In a safe lane, last hit with your attack, deny when you can (Feast gives you a deny threshold of 50%, the same as everyone else, because 7.41 removed the old 75% bonus), and hit the enemy hero whenever they step up for a creep. You do not need to be aggressive. You need to be patient, take a Feast level, and farm. At level 6, Infest gives you an escape and a way to heal, and since 7.41 it works on Ancient creeps by default.

Common early mistakes:

  • Wasting Rage in lane. It has a 21 second cooldown at level 1 and the immunity is for ganks, not for trading.
  • Forgetting the permanent health. Feast gives 1 max health for every creep kill and more for heroes. A clean last-hitting lane is a durable lane.
  • Overusing Open Wounds. At level 1 it costs 90 mana with a 30 second cooldown. Save it for the kill or for the moment a gank arrives.

Mid Game and Late Game Plan

After you reach your first item, Lifestealer’s plan is simple: farm, find a target, Open Wounds, Rage, chase. The details matter more than the plan. Each of his four tools has a specific window.

When to use Rage

Use Rage when a stun or silence is about to land, when you are being chased and want to reach an ally, or to start a fight with a window of immunity. At max level it lasts 6 seconds, enough to wait out a single disable but not a chain of them. Do not use it simply to hit harder. It does not increase your damage.

When to use Open Wounds

Open Wounds is both your chase tool and a team heal. At max level your allies recover 50% of the damage they deal to the target, which is huge when your team focuses a single hero. If you are the only damage dealer in the fight, use it on the target you want to run down. If you are fighting alongside four heroes who all hit the same unit, use it as the first thing in the fight so the healing starts immediately. For the full rules on how healing and lifesteal stack, read our guide on healing amplification and lifesteal.

When to use Infest

There are three good uses. To escape a fight by entering a creep or an ally, to heal to full while a team fights nearby, and to burst out of a host for 150/275/400 damage in a 700 radius when enemies are close. Since 7.41 it works on Ancient creeps by default, so more camps can serve as an escape or a healing spot. Bursting out of an ally gives you an escape and a gank in one, but remember that you are undetectable only while you are inside a host.

Late game

In the late game, the most useful Lifestealer is the one who stays alive. Feast is a percentage-based tool, so enemy carries with 4,000 health take more from every hit than supports with 2,000, and the healing from those hits keeps you in the fight. Armlet or a Black King Bar on top of a high Feast level makes you very hard to kill by damage alone. What kills you is a disable followed by burst. That is why Rage and a Black King Bar matter more than extra damage.

If you want to know how Rage’s movement speed bonus interacts with boots and the speed cap, our post on movement speed caps, slows and bonuses explains why 550 matters.

Win Rate by Game Length

OpenDota’s duration endpoint shows how the hero’s win rate changes as the game goes on. The sample covers 24,866 games and has an overall win rate of 49.2%, which is below the 51.5% headline figure, so we cite the shape, not the exact numbers.

Game lengthGames in sampleWin rate
Under 20 minutes1,29540.1%
20 to 29 minutes7,88848.3%
30 to 39 minutes9,20050.1%
40 to 49 minutes4,35650.8%
50 minutes and longer2,12750.6%

The pattern is clear. Lifestealer loses badly in games that end quickly, and then evens out and sits above 50% after 30 minutes. Part of that is survivorship: a game ends early when one side is crushed, and if you are the crushed side your win rate falls. But it also fits the kit. Feast scales with the enemy’s health bar, Armlet and Radiance need a few minutes to come online, and a Strength carry with a percentage-based heal becomes much harder to kill in a long fight than in a short one. The practical lesson is that you should draft with a team that can survive until your items arrive, and avoid him in all-in, five-minute-push compositions.

Matchups: Who He Beats and Who Beats Him

OpenDota’s matchup endpoint lists how often Lifestealer wins against each hero. The data this week is thin: 126 heroes and 8,630 games in total, which is about 68 games per matchup. We only list matchups with at least 40 games and you should treat them as hints, not facts.

Enemy heroGamesLifestealer win rate
Phantom Assassin4864.6%
Earthshaker4264.3%
Witch Doctor4463.6%
Vengeful Spirit5261.5%
Sand King4360.5%
Dawnbreaker8359.0%
Beastmaster6937.7%
Alchemist5935.6%
Kez6934.8%
Morphling4934.7%
Doom6229.0%

The sample cannot tell us why these numbers look the way they do, so what follows is our read, not a measured result. Our guess for Doom is that muting abilities and breaking passives shuts off Feast, which is the heart of the hero. We will not guess at the rest. Enigma and Anti-Mage appear at the very bottom of the full list but with fewer than 25 games each, so ignore them.

What beats him on the item side comes from his ability data:

  • Break: Silver Edge turns off passive abilities such as Feast, which turns off his sustain and his main damage source.
  • Silence and long disables: Rage covers him only for as long as it lasts, so hold your disables until it ends.
  • Spell immunity: Black King Bar blocks Open Wounds, since Valve’s data marks it as not piercing spell immunity.
  • Range and kiting: he has 150 attack range, so heroes who can hit him and keep moving are the safest to play against.

When to Pick Lifestealer in Ranked

He is a good ranked pick if you want a reliable carry with a strong lane and low item dependence early. Use the data to guide you.

Pick him when:

  • The enemy has Phantom Assassin, Earthshaker, Witch Doctor, Vengeful Spirit, Sand King or Dawnbreaker.
  • Your team has at least one support who can protect you for the first fifteen minutes, because the early game under 20 minutes is where his win rate drops.
  • You are in Archon, Legend or Ancient, where his win rate is highest.
  • You want a hero who can take Ancient camps early with Infest and does not need a perfect lane.

Avoid him when:

  • The enemy has Doom, Alchemist, Beastmaster, Morphling or Kez.
  • The enemy has more than two hard disables and long-duration silences, because Rage will not cover all of them.
  • Your team is built for a five-minute push and needs a fast game.

The Bottom Line

Lifestealer in 7.41f is a dependable carry with a solid public win rate and a high ban-to-pick ratio in pro matches. He wins 51.5% of public games, 52.4% in Ancient, and in OpenDota’s duration sample his win rate rises from about 40% in games under 20 minutes to about 50% after 30. The 7.41f nerfs hit Rage, one talent and the Scepter version of Infest, and none of them change what he is good at.

If you play him, max Feast first, buy Phase Boots, build Armlet or Radiance, use Rage to beat disables and Open Wounds to both slow and heal your team. If you are on the other side, break him with Silver Edge or a long silence, save your disables until Rage ends, and never let him farm for free.

FAQ

Q What changed for Lifestealer in patch 7.41f?
Three small nerfs. Rage cooldown increased from 20/19/18/17s to 21/20/19/18s, the Aghanim’s Scepter Infest enemy duration dropped from 5s to 4s, and the level 10 movement speed talent went from +20 to +15. The patch went live on September 15, 2026.
Q Is Lifestealer good in 7.41f?
Yes. OpenDota’s public stats on October 18, 2026 show 51.5% across 533,835 picks in seven days, 26th of 127 heroes. His win rate is highest in Ancient (52.4%) and Legend (52.1%), and professionals ban him 74 times against 27 picks.
Q What is the best Lifestealer item build in 7.41f?
Start with Gauntlets of Strength, buy Phase Boots, then Armlet of Mordiggian or Radiance. Add Skull Basher into Abyssal Blade, Black King Bar against heavy disables, and Aghanim’s Scepter or Skadi as a luxury item. The popularity sample is small, so treat it as a guide.
Q What is the best Lifestealer skill order?
Take Feast at level 1, Rage at level 2, Open Wounds at level 4 and Infest at level 6, and max Feast first. Valve does not publish a standard order, so this is our recommendation based on the kit and the 7.41 changes.
Q Who counters Lifestealer?
In OpenDota’s small matchup sample, Doom (29.0%), Morphling, Kez, Alchemist and Beastmaster all beat him often. Silver Edge turns off his passive Feast, and Black King Bar blocks Open Wounds, so those two items are the cleanest answers.
Q What does Rage do for Lifestealer?
Rage makes him debuff immune and gives 80% magic resistance and bonus movement speed for 3/4/5/6 seconds. The cooldown is 21/20/19/18 seconds in 7.41f. It does not add damage, so use it to beat a disable or to escape.
Q Is 7.41f still the current Dota 2 patch?
Yes. Valve’s official patch list ends at 7.41f, released on September 15, 2026, and no 7.42 date has been announced as of October 18, 2026. Our 7.42 release date breakdown covers what is known.
