PARI Universe Playoffs Day 1: OG Upset Spirit, Full Recap
PARI Universe playoffs Day 1 results: OG knocked out the group-stage winners Team Spirit 2-1, PARIVISION beat Team Liquid 2-1, Team Yandex beat Astra Invicta 2-1 and GamerLegion beat LEGION 2-1. All four series went to a deciding game, and in all four the winner had lost game one. Twelve games, 642 kills, one hero banned in every single draft, and two marathons that crossed the 64-minute mark.
This is the full recap. Every number comes from OpenDota match data for the twelve playoff games on patch 7.41f, so every match ID is checkable. You get the series-by-series story, the bracket as it stands for Day 2, the complete pick and ban data, the biggest comebacks, the standout individual lines, and what a ranked player can actually steal from a day where Dark Willow won six of eight games and Hoodwink won two of eight.
We also have to fix something from our own work. Our playoffs preview projected which Group B teams would advance using a game-differential calculation. The organizers settled it with tiebreak matches instead, and the result was different. The correction is in the first section below.

Day 1 Results at a Glance
The upper bracket quarterfinals produced four winners, four 2-1 scorelines, and exactly one real upset on paper. Team Spirit finished the group stage 4-0 with an 8-1 game record, and OG finished it 2-2. OG still won the series.
| Stage | Result | Game winners (length) |
|---|---|---|
| Upper bracket quarterfinal | PARIVISION 2-1 Team Liquid | Team Liquid (50:21), PARIVISION (34:29), PARIVISION (64:18) |
| Upper bracket quarterfinal | Team Yandex 2-1 Astra Invicta | Astra Invicta (64:11), Team Yandex (25:40), Team Yandex (33:15) |
| Upper bracket quarterfinal | OG 2-1 Team Spirit | Team Spirit (33:40), OG (46:07), OG (36:32) |
| Upper bracket quarterfinal | GamerLegion 2-1 LEGION | LEGION (42:23), GamerLegion (29:35), GamerLegion (40:25) |
Day 1 started with the first game at roughly 09:00 UTC and the last game finished near 23:30 UTC. Over the twelve games the average length was 41.7 minutes, the shortest was 25:40, and the longest was 64:18.

Correction: Who Really Made the Bracket
Our playoffs preview said Astra Invicta and BetBoom Team would take the last two Group B playoff places on game differential, and that LEGION would go home. That was wrong. We said at the time that we could not find the organizers’ tiebreak rules, and the rules turned out to be tiebreak matches rather than a differential.
The three-way tie at 1-3 between Astra Invicta, BetBoom Team and LEGION was settled on October 27 with single tiebreak games. The OpenDota records for that day show three games: LEGION beat Astra Invicta (match 9064215798), Astra Invicta beat BetBoom Team (match 9064337890), and LEGION beat BetBoom Team (match 9064490683). LEGION and Astra Invicta advanced. BetBoom Team went out.
That is why the Day 1 bracket contains Astra Invicta and LEGION, and not BetBoom. We would rather say so plainly than let a wrong claim sit on the site. The format details in the preview, such as the Bo3 series, the Bo5 Grand Final and the prize split, are unaffected.
The Four Series, Game by Game
Here is how each series actually went, with drafts and the moments that decided them. Hero names and KDA come straight from the OpenDota match data.
PARIVISION 2-1 Team Liquid
Liquid won game one, and it was ugly for PARIVISION. In a 50:21 game (match 9065380598) Liquid ran Witch Doctor, Pangolier, Enigma, Dark Willow and Lifestealer into a PARIVISION draft of Kez, Brewmaster, Ember Spirit, Keeper of the Light and Hoodwink. m1CKe’s Lifestealer finished 10/0/14 and Liquid took it 33 kills to 22. PARIVISION’s Hoodwink ended 3/12/13, and that line sums up the game: the pick was in the draft, but it never got a window.
Game two was the reset. PARIVISION played Templar Assassin, Tidehunter, Slardar, Rubick and Dazzle, and Satanic’s Templar Assassin finished 13/0/8 in a 34:29 game (match 9065451128). Liquid answered with Techies, and tOfu went 2/10/10. The team gold advantage for PARIVISION never went negative at any minute of that game.
Game three (match 9065511384) ran 64:18 and ended 37 kills to 23 for PARIVISION. Liquid first-picked Dazzle, PARIVISION took Nature’s Prophet, Centaur Warrunner, Slardar, Dark Willow and Bane, and Satanic’s Nature’s Prophet finished 16/2/17. PARIVISION’s worst moment was a gold deficit of 1,662. PARIVISION lost the opening game, then outlasted Liquid in the two that followed.
Team Yandex 2-1 Astra Invicta
Astra Invicta took game one in a 64:11 slugfest (match 9065653541), 46 kills to 24, behind Nightfall’s Clinkz at 21/4/15 and lorenof’s Slark at 12/3/20. Astra had been 7,065 gold behind at their worst point and still closed it, which is a great sign for a lower-seeded team. Yandex’s Terrorblade went 13/4/6 on the losing side.
Then Yandex took control. Game two lasted 25:40 (match 9065794389), the shortest game of the day, and ended 25 kills to 11 with AMMAR_THE_F’s Timbersaw at 14/1/2. Game three was worse for Astra: Yandex played Tiny, Sand King, Huskar, Techies and Windranger, ended 31 kills to 8 in 33:15 (match 9065883621), and watson’s Tiny finished 12/0/8. Astra had first-picked Lone Druid in that game, and Madder Sky’s Lone Druid finished 0/2/1.
OG 2-1 Team Spirit
This is the series everyone will talk about. Spirit won game one in 33:40 by a margin of 43 kills to 11 (match 9065986613). They first-picked Techies, added Kez, Ember Spirit, Dark Willow and Largo, and Yatoro’s Kez finished 15/3/7. OG’s side of that game was Death Prophet, Timbersaw, Keeper of the Light, Dragon Knight and Sven, and Keeper of the Light went 0/12/8. It looked like a group-stage winner doing group-stage winner things.
Game two flipped the whole series. OG answered with Dazzle, Timbersaw, Shadow Demon, Magnus and Sven (match 9066084051). SSS’s Timbersaw went 19/1/16, Topson’s Magnus went 13/3/20, and OG won 47 kills to 21 in 46:07. Spirit’s Hoodwink ended 2/18/7.
Game three (match 9066180509) was the same plan with sharper edges. OG first-picked Dazzle, then added Bristleback, Rubick, Magnus and Terrorblade. Natsumi’s Terrorblade finished 11/1/13, SSS’s Bristleback 11/4/9, and OG’s gold advantage was never negative in the whole game. Spirit’s Spirit Breaker ended 3/13/8. OG won 40 kills to 18 in 36:32.
The thing worth noticing is the shape of the draft. OG found a Dazzle plus Magnus plus carry-with-protection shell that Spirit could not break, and they got it to work twice in a row. OG ran the same core twice in a row, and Spirit had no answer to it in game three.
GamerLegion 2-1 LEGION
LEGION took game one with a result that should be framed on a wall. They lost the kill count 27 to 21 and still won in 42:23 (match 9066273901). LEGION had been 8,130 gold behind at their worst point. Darklord’s Terrorblade finished 12/0/2, and LEGION opened the draft with a Brewmaster first pick. GamerLegion’s Axe went 10/4/4 on the losing side.
After that, GamerLegion simply took over. Game two was 29:35 with GamerLegion up 34 kills to 11 (match 9066349307), built on Sven, Invoker, Dark Willow, Night Stalker and Winter Wyvern. Game three was a 40:25 blowout at 47 kills to 16 (match 9066391707), with Yuma’s Ursa at 16/3/13 and RCY’s Puck at 12/3/12. LEGION’s Dark Willow in that game went 0/11/9.

The Game-One Pattern
All four series winners lost game one. PARIVISION lost to Liquid, Yandex lost to Astra, OG lost to Spirit and GamerLegion lost to LEGION, and each of them came back to win the next two games.
Twelve games is a tiny sample, and we are not going to build a theory around it. But it lines up with something every high-MMR player knows. The team that wins game one has just revealed its best draft, and the team that lost game one gets to see it, ban it, and adapt. In a Bo3 with full ban phases, the loser of game one has the information advantage, and the best teams use it.
The practical read is simple. If you lose your first game in a series, which in ranked is just “your last game”, you are not behind in information. Look at what the other team did, and change what you are doing. The pros on Day 1 did exactly that.
Draft Data From All 12 Games
57 different heroes were picked across the twelve games, and 52 different heroes were banned. Dark Willow was the most successful popular hero of the day, and Hoodwink was the least successful. Here are the twelve most-picked heroes.
| Hero | Picks | Record | Win rate | Times banned |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dark Willow | 8 | 6-2 | 75% | 3 |
| Hoodwink | 8 | 2-6 | 25% | 0 |
| Windranger | 6 | 3-3 | 50% | 3 |
| Dazzle | 5 | 4-1 | 80% | 4 |
| Dragon Knight | 4 | 2-2 | 50% | 6 |
| Techies | 4 | 2-2 | 50% | 8 |
| Timbersaw | 4 | 2-2 | 50% | 3 |
| Witch Doctor | 4 | 1-3 | 25% | 4 |
| Sven | 3 | 2-1 | 67% | 1 |
| Terrorblade | 3 | 2-1 | 67% | 5 |
| Largo | 3 | 1-2 | 33% | 1 |
| Pangolier | 3 | 1-2 | 33% | 0 |
Dark Willow was picked in eight of twelve games and won six of them. It showed up on every side of every series: Liquid, PARIVISION, Astra Invicta, Yandex, Spirit, GamerLegion and LEGION all drafted her at least once. She is the glue hero for teams that want disable, a sleep window and a ranged body in the fight.
Hoodwink was picked in eight of twelve games and won only two. That is a stark split, and we do not want to over-read it, because Hoodwink often goes to the team that is already drafting reactively. Still, Spirit’s Hoodwink finishing 2/18/7 and Saksa’s Hoodwink on Yandex finishing 4/14/12 are not signs of a hero running the show.
Dazzle won four of five. OG drafted it in both of their wins over Spirit, and PARIVISION and Astra Invicta each won with it as well. The one loss was Liquid’s first pick in the PARIVISION decider. Protection supports that keep a core alive through the first big fight are doing real work in this meta.
Techies was picked four times and won twice, but it was banned eight times. Teams are treating it as a hero worth removing, not a hero worth beating.
The Ban Phase
The ban data tells you what the pros think will break the game, and on Day 1 the answer was clear.
| Hero | Bans | Banned in | Picks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bounty Hunter | 12 | 100% | 0 |
| Enigma | 10 | 83% | 2 |
| Lone Druid | 10 | 83% | 2 |
| Brewmaster | 8 | 67% | 2 |
| Earth Spirit | 8 | 67% | 2 |
| Slark | 8 | 67% | 2 |
| Techies | 8 | 67% | 4 |
| Anti-Mage | 6 | 50% | 1 |
| Dragon Knight | 6 | 50% | 4 |
| Doom | 5 | 42% | 0 |
Bounty Hunter was banned in all 12 games. That follows on from the group stage, where it was banned in 40 of 45. It has been the most untouchable hero in the tournament, and no team has let it into a game yet.
Lone Druid and Enigma each went to the ban list in ten of the twelve games. Lone Druid was picked twice, by Yandex in game five and Astra in game six, and went 1-1: Yandex won with it and Astra lost with it. Enigma was picked only twice, one win for Liquid and one loss for Spirit. If you have been wondering why neither hero is in your ranked games, this is why. When the bans are this one-sided, the pro meta is telling you what it thinks.
Earth Spirit, Techies, Slark and Brewmaster were each banned eight times. Our read is that these are heroes that punish a team with a slow or greedy draft, so the pros are banning to protect their own plan.
Comebacks, Marathons and Stomps
Three games were won from a deficit of more than 7,000 gold: Liquid’s game one, LEGION’s game one and Astra Invicta’s game one. All three came in game one of a series. Here are the key games, with the winner’s worst gold deficit and the length.
| Match ID | Why it matters | Winner | Loser | Length | Kills | Winner worst gold deficit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9065380598 | Comeback | Team Liquid | PARIVISION | 50:21 | 33-22 | 9,384 |
| 9065511384 | Marathon | PARIVISION | Team Liquid | 64:18 | 37-23 | 1,662 |
| 9065653541 | Comeback / Marathon | Astra Invicta | Team Yandex | 64:11 | 46-24 | 7,065 |
| 9065794389 | Shortest | Team Yandex | Astra Invicta | 25:40 | 25-11 | 468 |
| 9065986613 | Most lopsided | Team Spirit | OG | 33:40 | 43-11 | 8 |
| 9066273901 | Comeback | LEGION | GamerLegion | 42:23 | 21-27 | 8,130 |
The marathons are the story of the series between PARIVISION and Liquid and the one between Yandex and Astra Invicta. Two games passed 64 minutes, and in both the winning side had at least 37 kills. The stomps went the other way: the 25:40 game between Yandex and Astra Invicta was the shortest of the day, and the 33:40 game between Spirit and OG was the most lopsided at 43 kills to 11.
Standout Individual Performances
These are the lines that stood out. Player names are as shown in the OpenDota data.
| Player | Team | Hero | K/D/A | Game | Match ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Satanic | PARIVISION | Nature’s Prophet | 16/2/17 | Game 3 | 9065511384 |
| Nightfall | Astra Invicta | Clinkz | 21/4/15 | Game 4 | 9065653541 |
| SSS | OG | Timbersaw | 19/1/16 | Game 8 | 9066084051 |
| Yuma | GamerLegion | Ursa | 16/3/13 | Game 12 | 9066391707 |
| Yatoro | Team Spirit | Kez | 15/3/7 | Game 7 | 9065986613 |
| AMMAR_THE_F | Team Yandex | Timbersaw | 14/1/2 | Game 5 | 9065794389 |
| Darklord | LEGION | Terrorblade | 12/0/2 | Game 10 | 9066273901 |
| Satanic | PARIVISION | Templar Assassin | 13/0/8 | Game 2 | 9065451128 |
| m1CKe | Team Liquid | Lifestealer | 10/0/14 | Game 1 | 9065380598 |
Two things jump out. First, three of the best lines of the day came from players who barely died: m1CKe at 10/0/14, Darklord at 12/0/2 and AMMAR_THE_F at 14/1/2. Second, OG’s SSS had the cleanest big game of the day with Timbersaw at 19/1/16, and then followed it with an 11/4/9 Bristleback. That is a player who is comfortable on very different heroes.
Day 2: The Matchups
The upper bracket semifinals and the lower bracket first round are all on October 29. Every one of them is a Bo3. The lower-bracket round-one losers are out of the tournament, and the upper-bracket semifinal losers drop into the lower bracket.
| Series | Stage | What is at stake |
|---|---|---|
| Team Spirit vs LEGION | Lower bracket round 1 | Loser is eliminated (7th-8th place) |
| Team Liquid vs Astra Invicta | Lower bracket round 1 | Loser is eliminated (7th-8th place) |
| PARIVISION vs Team Yandex | Upper bracket semifinal | Winner reaches the upper bracket final, loser drops to the lower bracket |
| OG vs GamerLegion | Upper bracket semifinal | Winner reaches the upper bracket final, loser drops to the lower bracket |
Per the match pages on hawk.live, Team Liquid versus Astra Invicta is listed for 09:00 UTC and PARIVISION versus Team Yandex for 15:00 UTC, which is 13:00 and 19:00 in Dubai. Check the hawk.live PARI Universe page for the start times of the other two series, because Day 1 ran well behind its listed slots.
The prize table on the same page pays $125,000 for first, $50,000 for second, $30,000 for third, $14,000 for fourth, $10,000 each for fifth and sixth, and $5,000 each for seventh and eighth. That means a team losing its lower-bracket first-round series on Day 2 takes home $5,000 and goes out, and a team losing its upper-bracket semifinal still has the lower bracket to fight in.
What we are watching
- Spirit versus LEGION. Spirit went 4-0 in the group stage and then lost a Bo3 to the team that went 2-2. LEGION just won a game they were 8,130 gold behind in. A loss here ends Spirit’s tournament.
- PARIVISION versus Yandex. Both teams won their first series from behind. This is the upper bracket semifinal with the most draft depth on both sides.
- OG versus GamerLegion. OG’s Dazzle and Magnus shell won twice in a row. GamerLegion’s Ursa and Puck drafts won twice in a row. Someone has to ban out of something.
- Liquid versus Astra Invicta. Both teams won a long game one and lost the series. One of them leaves today.
What Ranked Players Can Steal
A pro tournament is not a ranked game, and a pro draft does not drop into your 4K match without edits. But there are real lessons here.
- Treat game one as scouting. All four winners lost game one and won the series. In your own ranked session, losing a game is information. Look at what beat you and change it before you queue again.
- Protection beats flash. Dazzle won four of five. In pub games the equivalent is a support that keeps your carry alive through the first big fight. A support who keeps the carry alive through the first big fight is worth more than a fourth damage dealer.
- Do not pick a hero because it showed up in a tournament. Hoodwink was picked eight times and won twice. Popularity is not strength. Check the context before you copy a pick.
- Protect your own plan with bans. The pros banned heroes that punish slow drafts: Earth Spirit, Techies, Slark and Brewmaster. If your team has a plan, use your ban on the hero that wrecks it.
- Comebacks are real. Three of the four game-one winners were behind by more than 7,000 gold at some point. Games are not over until the throne goes down.
