Necrophos Guide 7.41f: Build, Skill Order and Matchups

Necrophos guide 7.41f featured

Necrophos is one of the most picked heroes in public matchmaking and one of the most banned in pro games, and patch 7.41f just nerfed him again. On October 19, 2026, OpenDota’s public-match stats show him at 51.0% across 606,300 picks in the last seven days. That is 36th of 127 heroes by win rate and 17th by pick count, while the median hero sits at 49.5%. In OpenDota’s pro-match tally he has 56 picks, 27 wins and 115 bans, the 11th most banned hero in the sample. This Necrophos guide for 7.41f explains what Valve changed on September 15, 2026, what the hero looks like after the 7.41 rework, and how to build and play him.

The short version: 7.41f hit the two things that make Necrophos hard to kill. The Sadist hero kill multiplier dropped from 6 to 4, and Ghost Shroud lost 10 points of Restoration Amplification at every level. His damage, his Heartstopper Aura and Reaper’s Scythe were not touched. The data says he is still comfortably above average, but his edge over the typical hero shrinks every rank you climb and is gone by Divine.

Below you will find every Necrophos change since patch 7.39, the current ability numbers from Valve’s data feed, win rates by rank and by game length, a skill order, an item build, matchups and a plain verdict on when to pick him. For the wider context, read our 7.41f patch notes guide and the 7.41f offlane guide first.

What Changed for Necrophos in 7.41f

Necrophos received two nerfs in 7.41f: the Sadist hero kill multiplier fell from 6 to 4, and Ghost Shroud’s Restoration Amplification fell from 55/65/75/85% to 45/55/65/75%. The patch went live on September 15, 2026, and it is still the latest numbered gameplay patch in Valve’s patch list as of October 19. The full text is in Valve’s official 7.41f patch notes.

  • Sadist: Hero Kill Multiplier decreased from 6 to 4.
  • Ghost Shroud: Restoration Amplification decreased from 55/65/75/85% to 45/55/65/75%.

Both changes hit his sustain, not his damage. Sadist is his innate: every unit he kills gives stacking health and mana regeneration for 8 seconds, and a hero kill is worth a multiple of a creep kill. Cutting the multiplier from 6 to 4 means a hero kill should refuel him by roughly a third less than it did. Ghost Shroud is the button he presses when he is low, and a 10-point cut in amplification at every level makes the heal-up smaller.

The 7.41f numbers are not new, though. The Ghost Shroud values are exactly the 45/55/65/75% that the ability had before patch 7.40b. Necrophos has bounced between buffs and nerfs since 7.39, and the history below, pulled from Valve’s official data feed, shows how much has moved. Patches not listed carry no Necrophos notes in the feed.

Read that table top to bottom and the direction is clear. Since 7.41, every Necrophos patch (7.41b, 7.41e and 7.41f) has been a nerf, and every one of them landed on his sustain or his Shard. Valve is not touching his damage. It is trimming how quickly he recovers.

Is Necrophos Good Right Now?

Yes, on public-match numbers. OpenDota shows Necrophos at 51.0% across 606,300 picks in the last seven days (October 19, 2026), 36th of 127 heroes by win rate and 17th by picks. The median hero is at 49.5%, so he is about 1.5 points above average, and at that pick volume the figure is not noise. For comparison, our recent guides covered Spectre and Mars, and Necrophos is picked far more often than either.

The more interesting number is how that win rate changes with rank. OpenDota splits the same data by rank bracket. I compared his win rate in each bracket against the median hero in that bracket (heroes with more than 500 picks), and the gap closes steadily as you climb.

Necrophos wins 4.8 points more than the typical hero at Herald and 0.2 points less at Divine. Valve’s feed gives him the lowest complexity rating (1 of 3), and my reading is that a low-complexity hero with a strong sustain engine punishes teams that cannot coordinate a burst or break him. At the top of the ladder, players have answers and he loses the edge. That is a hypothesis, not something the data proves, but the trend itself is clear and the sample at each rank is large.

In pro games the picture is different. OpenDota’s pro tally shows 56 picks, 27 wins (48.2%) and 115 bans. He is far more banned than picked, which tells you teams respect him in the draft even when they do not play him. If you want to see how pros are drafting right now, our post-shuffle power rankings cover the teams.

Necrophos Kit With Current Numbers

All numbers below come straight from Valve’s hero data feed as of October 19, 2026. Necrophos is an Intelligence hero with a range of 500, a base movement speed of 280 and a projectile speed of 1,200. At level 1 he has 516 health, 351 mana, 4 base armor and 25 magic resistance. Base stats are 18 Strength (+2.3 per level), 12 Agility (+1.3) and 23 Intelligence (+2.7). Base damage is 49-53 with a 1.7 second attack rate. OpenDota tags him as a Carry, Nuker, Durable and Disabler.

AbilityNumbers (levels 1 to 4 or 1 to 3)What it does
Sadist (innate)3.8 + 0.2 per level HP and mana regen per stack, 8s duration, Hero Kill Multiplier 4Each unit killed gives a stacking regen buff. Hero kills count as a multiple. Break stops new stacks but does not remove existing ones
Death PulseDamage 100/160/220/280, heal 70/90/110/130, cooldown 8/7/6/5, mana 115/130/145/160, radius 500Damages enemies and heals allies around him. Cannot be disjointed
Ghost ShroudDuration 3/3.5/4/4.5s, Restoration Amplification 45/55/65/75%, slow 16/19/22/25%, radius 700, cooldown 28/24/20/16, mana 75He cannot attack or be attacked, slows nearby enemies and takes extra magic damage, but his healing and regen are amplified
Heartstopper AuraHealth decay 0.8/1.3/1.8/2.3% of max HP, radius 700Enemies near him lose a percentage of max health over time. Does not affect ancient creeps and does not disable Blink Dagger
Reaper’s ScytheStun 1.5s, damage per missing HP 0.7/0.8/0.9, mana 250/375/500, cooldown 100, cast range 600, cast point 0.45sStuns, then deals damage at the end of the stun based on missing health. A kill gives permanent regen of 1/2/3 health and mana
Death Seeker (Aghanim’s Shard)Mana 160, cooldown 19, cast range 600, cast point 0.2sTurns him into a large Death Pulse toward a target position that spreads to nearby enemies and allies. Does not trigger spell reflect

Two details matter more than they look. First, the Aghanim’s Scepter changes Heartstopper: with Scepter, its health decay is increased by 50% of Necrophos’s current health regeneration, according to the Scepter value in Valve’s data. That ties his best item to his sustain engine, which is exactly the part Valve keeps nerfing. Second, Death Seeker is granted by Aghanim’s Shard. The data lists a 2.5 second ethereal duration and a 25 magic resistance reduction on the ability, so check the in-game tooltip for who exactly receives them before you commit to a play around it.

Ghost Shroud interacts with a lot of hero states, and our post on invulnerable, debuff immune, banished and ethereal states explains how ethereal works against spells and items. For the amplification side, see how healing amplification actually works.

Skill Order and Talents

Valve does not publish a standard skill order, so the one below is my recommendation based on the kit and the 7.41 changes. It is built around one problem: Death Pulse is expensive. At level 1 it costs 115 of your 351 mana, so you get three casts and then you are empty.

Hero levelSkillWhy
1Death PulseYour only real lane tool. Damage on enemies, heal on your lane partner
2Heartstopper AuraFree damage while you stand near enemies, no mana cost
3Death PulseShortens the cooldown and raises the heal
4Heartstopper AuraAura damage climbs fast between levels 1 and 4
5Death PulseThird point
6Reaper’s ScytheTake it at the first opportunity
7Death PulseMaxed with a 5 second cooldown
8 to 9Heartstopper AuraMaxed at 2.3% of max health
10TalentSee below
11 onwardGhost Shroud, then Reaper’s Scythe at 12 and 18Maxing Shroud gets the cooldown to 16s

Some players take one point of Ghost Shroud early as an escape. I prefer to leave it until level 11 because the three early points in Death Pulse and Heartstopper are what win the lane, and a level 1 Shroud has a 28 second cooldown.

Talents. Valve’s patch notes state the level for some of these and not others. What the notes confirm:

  • Level 10: -2.5s Ghost Shroud cooldown (stated in the 7.39 notes). The other option at this tier is +2s Sadist duration, placed here by elimination from the data.
  • Level 15: +60 Death Pulse heal or +15% Ghost Shroud slow (both stated in 7.40).
  • Level 20: +20% Heartstopper regen reduction (7.40) or +75 spell area of effect (7.41).
  • Level 25: +0.3 Reaper’s Scythe damage per missing HP (7.41). The other option is -2.5s Death Pulse cooldown, again placed by elimination.

My picks: Ghost Shroud cooldown at 10, Death Pulse heal at 15 if you are playing with a team that fights together, and the Scythe talent at 25. The 0.3 bonus on a 0.9 base is a 33% increase in Scythe damage, which is the largest single damage upgrade he has. The +75 spell area of effect at 20 is worth taking in teamfight-heavy games. The Heartstopper regen reduction is niche unless the enemy relies on one big healer.

Necrophos Item Build

The table below combines what OpenDota’s item popularity data shows for Necrophos with what the kit suggests. The popularity sample is small (hundreds of builds per phase, not thousands), so use it as a guide to what players build, not as proof of what wins.

PhaseMost common in the sampleWhat I recommend
StartBranches (207 of 591), Faerie Fire (112), Circlet (103), Tango (60), Magic Stick (55)Tango, Branches, Faerie Fire and a Circlet or Magic Stick. You are mana-starved from minute one
EarlyBoots (99 of 200), Bracer (21), Null Talisman (20), Sacred Relic (16)Boots of Speed, then Null Talisman or Bracer for stats
MidRadiance (91 of 740), Aghanim’s Shard (82), Talisman of Evasion (77), Sacred Relic (76), Boots of Travel (66)Radiance, Aghanim’s Shard and Boots of Travel
LateHeart of Tarrasque (58 of 391), Reaver (54), Shiva’s Guard (43), Black King Bar (38), Boots of Travel 2 (33), Aghanim’s Scepter (24 plus 17 under a second item id)Heart (Reaver is its component), Shiva’s Guard and BKB, with Aghanim’s Scepter as a sixth slot luxury

Radiance is his staple. Its burn and Heartstopper both tick on enemies standing near you, and the two together are why a Necrophos farming a lane can melt a whole wave. It is also the most common mid-game buy in the sample. Aghanim’s Shard gets you Death Seeker, an ability that has been nerfed twice since 7.41 (mana up from 125 to 160, cast range down from 750 to 600) and is still the second most common mid-game buy.

Heart of Tarrasque fits a hero whose kit is a regeneration engine with an amplifier built in. Shiva’s Guard adds an aura and a slow in the same fights where Ghost Shroud is already slowing. Black King Bar matters because you cannot cast Reaper’s Scythe from inside a stun, and BKB keeps you free to cast it. If your game is a long one, Aghanim’s Scepter turns his regen directly into Heartstopper damage.

For help deciding between similar items, our 7.41f item tier list lists what Valve’s current numbers favor.

Laning and Early Game

Necrophos is a hero who is stronger the more he is allowed to stand still near creeps, and weaker the more he has to run. His early game has three ideas.

  • Treat Death Pulse as lane sustain, not a nuke. At level 1 it deals 100 damage and heals 70, and costs 115 mana with an 8 second cooldown. Cast it when it hits an enemy hero and heals an ally or a wave, not as a reflex.
  • Every kill is regen. Sadist gives stacking health and mana regen for 8 seconds for each unit killed, and it works on creeps. Last-hit cleanly and you win back a real chunk of the mana you spend. Remember Break stops new stacks from being gained.
  • Heartstopper does most of the work. At level 4 it takes 2.3% of max health from every enemy within 700, with no cost. Against a hero with 700 HP that is about 16 HP per second, and the number grows with their max health.

Your mana is the limiting factor. With a 351 starting pool and a 115 cost, the second Death Pulse already puts you in the danger zone, and the third leaves nothing for a retreat. If you are in the offlane, take a Circlet or Magic Stick and focus on staying alive until Radiance.

Do not take fights in lane when you are low on mana. Ghost Shroud makes him unattackable, but if you skipped it early you have no panic button, and a Necrophos with no mana and no Shroud is easy prey for any hero with a quick stun.

Mid Game and Late Game Plan

After the lane, Necrophos has two jobs: farm and teamfight. Radiance and Boots of Travel let him split between waves quickly, and Heartstopper rewards pushing into enemy territory where heroes cluster. The way to win with him is simple to describe and harder to do: stay in range of the enemy core, keep your regen stacks alive, and use Ghost Shroud on yourself or Reaper’s Scythe on the right target.

The Reaper’s Scythe math

Scythe deals its damage at the end of the 1.5 second stun, based on the target’s missing health at that moment. The table below uses Valve’s numbers (0.7/0.8/0.9 per missing HP, and 1.0/1.1/1.2 with the level 25 talent) and shows damage before any resistances.

Target missing HPScythe 1Scythe 2Scythe 3Scythe 3 with +0.3 talent
1,0007008009001,200
1,5001,0501,2001,3501,800
2,0001,4001,6001,8002,400

These are my calculations from the per-missing-HP values, not a tooltip. The practical rule is to spend the first part of a fight on Heartstopper and Death Pulse so the target is already hurt, and only then commit the 250 to 500 mana. A Scythe on a full-health target does almost nothing. A Scythe on a target at 40% of a 3,000 HP bar has 1,800 missing, which is 1,620 damage at level 3 and 2,160 with the talent.

Scythe also feeds the engine. A kill under its effect gives permanent regen (1/2/3 health and mana by level), and Valve’s tooltip says any kill under the effect is credited to Necrophos. Over a long game that stacks into a real regeneration bonus, but 7.40 already halved the per-kill value, so do not build your plan around it.

Necrophos Reaper's Scythe striking a wounded armored hero

Ghost Shroud timing

Ghost Shroud at level 4 lasts 4.5 seconds with a 16 second cooldown, a 25% slow around him and 75% Restoration Amplification. That makes it the strongest defensive spell in his kit and the one to use proactively, not when you are already at 10% health. The best uses are:

  • Mid-fight when you are focused. You cannot be attacked, so physical damage stops, and the slow helps your team catch or escape.
  • Together with a healing event. The amplification is the whole point. Pair it with a Death Pulse and any healing you receive.
  • Not against burst magic damage. In this form he takes extra magic damage, so a hero with a big nuke can kill him in Shroud.

Because of 7.41f, expect Shroud to heal less than it did before September 15. A 10-point cut at max level is small in a short window but adds up across a long fight.

Win Rate by Game Length

OpenDota publishes win rate by match duration. For Necrophos the pattern is flat, with a small peak in the middle and a drop in very long games.

Game lengthGames in sampleNecrophos win rate
Under 20 minutes66149.6%
20 to 29 minutes3,98551.1%
30 to 39 minutes4,18550.5%
40 to 49 minutes1,78948.0%
50 to 59 minutes75050.7%
60 minutes and longer28944.6%

Source: OpenDota duration data for Necrophos, pulled October 19, 2026. The sample is 11,659 games with an overall win rate of 50.2%, lower than the 51.0% headline from the hero stats feed, so the two do not use the same window. Read the shape, not the exact figures.

The shape says Necrophos is not a hero that waits for the very late game. He does best between 20 and 40 minutes, which fits a Radiance and Heart timing, and he is no better in 50-minute games than in 25-minute ones. Many players assume regen heroes scale into the very late game, and this sample does not show that. If your lane goes badly, you do not necessarily recover just by stalling.

Matchups: Who He Beats and Who Beats Him

OpenDota’s matchup data for Necrophos contains 6,780 games across 126 opponent heroes, an average of about 54 games each, and his overall win rate in that sample is 49.4%. These are small numbers. I only list opponents with 100 or more games below, and I am not going to invent a reason for every row.

OpponentGamesNecrophos win rate
Windranger13142.0%
Tidehunter10242.2%
Rubick20445.6%
Snapfire14546.2%

Hoodwink13751.8%
Axe12452.4%
Tiny11652.6%
Ember Spirit11252.7%
Shadow Fiend16553.9%

Rows under 100 games are too noisy to trust, but for the record, a few notable ones in the sample were Keeper of the Light (38.1% over 84 games), Muerta (40.4% over 89), Crystal Maiden (40.5% over 79) and Disruptor (57.1% over 91). If several of the low rows show up on the enemy team, treat it as a draft warning, not a rule.

How to Play Against Necrophos

This section is built from his kit, not from the matchup sample.

  • Break and silence. Valve’s notes on Sadist say Break disables new stacks. Silence stops him from casting Ghost Shroud and Reaper’s Scythe, the two spells that decide a fight.
  • Black King Bar. Reaper’s Scythe is a targeted stun. Activate BKB before he commits and it cannot land.
  • Healing reduction. His whole kit is built on regen and amplification, so items that reduce healing (Spirit Vessel is the usual one) cut into it directly.
  • Magic burst while he is in Shroud. He cannot be attacked, but he takes extra magic damage in that form. Save a nuke for the moment he presses it.
  • Stay above half health. The Scythe does almost nothing against a full-health target. Do not take cheap damage when you know he is nearby.
  • Do not stand in Heartstopper. It is 2.3% max health per second at level 4 and ticks on your whole team for free. Fight outside his 700 range.

For what Radiance and item-based answers do against his damage, see our post on armor and magic resistance math.

When to Pick Necrophos in Ranked

Pick him when your team can use his strengths and the enemy cannot answer them. A good draft for Necrophos has:

  • A support who can keep him alive and mana-fed in the lane (he heals them back).
  • At least one disable of your own so that Scythe has a window, or a team that follows up.
  • Enemy heroes that are slow, melee and clustered, so Heartstopper tick adds up.

Skip him when the enemy has multiple silences, Break, burst magic or a lot of healing reduction, and when you are playing at Divine or above, where the data says his edge over the median hero is gone. At lower ranks, where coordination is weaker, he is simply a very effective hero.

If you are climbing and you do not have the time to master a pick or learn a draft, a coach can fix more than a guide can. Our Dota 2 coaching reviews your replays hero by hero, and the MMR boosting guide explains the other route.

The Bottom Line

Necrophos in 7.41f is a strong, popular hero whose edge fades as you climb. He wins 51.0% of public games and 53.6% in Herald, but only 49.5% in Divine, which is slightly below the median hero there. The two 7.41f nerfs landed on Sadist and Ghost Shroud, so his sustain is weaker than it has been for months, but his damage kit is unchanged.

If you play him, take Death Pulse and Heartstopper early, buy Radiance and Aghanim’s Shard, hold Ghost Shroud for the right moment and spend Reaper’s Scythe on a target that is already hurt. If you are on the other side, bring BKB, silence or Break, and do not fight inside his Heartstopper range.

If the ladder itself is the problem, a guide will not fix it. Our comparison of the best Dota 2 boosting services and our honest answer on whether Dota 2 boosting is safe are the places to start.

FAQ

Q What changed for Necrophos in patch 7.41f?
Two nerfs. The Sadist Hero Kill Multiplier dropped from 6 to 4, and Ghost Shroud Restoration Amplification dropped from 55/65/75/85% to 45/55/65/75%. The patch went live on September 15, 2026.
Q Is Necrophos good in 7.41f?
Yes at most ranks. OpenDota’s public stats on October 19, 2026 show 51.0% across 606,300 picks in seven days, 36th of 127 heroes. His win rate is highest in Herald (53.6%) and falls to 49.5% in Divine.
Q What is the best Necrophos item build in 7.41f?
Start with Tango, Branches and Faerie Fire, buy boots, then Radiance and Aghanim’s Shard. Late game, Heart of Tarrasque, Shiva’s Guard and Black King Bar are the most common choices. The popularity sample is small, so treat it as a guide.
Q What is the best Necrophos skill order?
Take Death Pulse at level 1, Heartstopper Aura at 2, and max Death Pulse and Heartstopper before Ghost Shroud. Reaper’s Scythe goes in at levels 6, 12 and 18. Valve does not publish a standard order, so this is our recommendation.
Q How does Reaper’s Scythe damage work?
It stuns for 1.5 seconds and deals damage at the end of the stun based on the target’s missing health: 0.7/0.8/0.9 per missing HP, or 1.0/1.1/1.2 with the level 25 talent. A kill under it also gives permanent health and mana regen.
Q How do you counter Necrophos?
Buy Black King Bar so Reaper’s Scythe cannot land, use silence or Break to stop his spells and Sadist stacks, avoid his 700 range Heartstopper aura, and save magic burst for the moment he uses Ghost Shroud.
Q Is 7.41f still the current Dota 2 patch?
Yes. Valve’s official patch list ends at 7.41f, released on September 15, 2026, and no 7.42 date has been announced as of October 19, 2026. Our 7.42 release date breakdown covers what is known.
