Dark Carnival: Every Reward and How to Get Them Before It Ends
The Dark Carnival event is winding down, and if you have not locked in every cosmetic you wanted, time is running out. Valve has not published an official end date, but the community estimate — based on the Crownfall precedent and the TI 2026 timeline — is late August or early September 2026. This guide covers every reward available in the Dark Carnival, how to earn each one, and which ones to prioritize in the final grind window.
Everything here is drawn from confirmed game behavior across the three chapters Valve has shipped. If you want the detailed end-date analysis, we have a dedicated page: Dota 2 Dark Carnival End Date and Full Schedule. For the Chapter 3 breakdown, see our Chapter 3 Midnight Run Guide.

Every Dark Carnival Reward Category at a Glance
The Dark Carnival is structured differently from a traditional Battle Pass. There is no single level track. Rewards are spread across five distinct systems, each with its own currency and unlock logic. Before diving into each system, here is the full map of what exists.
| Reward Category | How You Earn It | Cost | Time-Gated? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train Map cosmetic nodes | Hero Tickets from matches | Free (time investment) | Yes — closes with event |
| Train Map story nodes | Hero Ticket combinations | Free | Yes |
| Candyworks Shop items | Candy Sacks (event currency) | Free (Candy Sacks) | Yes |
| The Oracle rewards | Seeing Stones | Free (co-op bots / matches) | Yes |
| Mini-game Carnival Tickets | Automaton Attack scoring | Free (skill-based) | Chapter 3 active |
| Chapter mini-game extras | Cauldron Car, Engine Car | Free | Chapter 3 active |
| Automaton Personas (x5) | Emporium of Curiosities | $14.99 each | No (shop stays post-event) |
| Ringmaster Announcer Pack | Emporium of Curiosities | Purchasable | Limited window likely |
The split between free and paid rewards is important to understand. The free-to-earn rewards close when the event ends. The Emporium of Curiosities operates independently — Valve has historically kept paid shops open for some time after an event closes — but there is no guarantee. If cosmetics from the shop are your target, do not assume you have unlimited time after the event closes.
How the Dark Carnival Currency System Works
Getting any free reward in the Dark Carnival requires understanding four currencies. All four feed different parts of the reward structure, and confusing them is the most common reason players feel stuck mid-event.
Hero Tickets
Hero Tickets are the primary currency for advancing through the Train map. Each hero in the event has three associated ticket types (named after the hero). When you win a match playing that hero, you receive one of each of that hero’s three ticket types. When you lose, you receive only one of the three ticket types. Hero Tickets unlock Train map nodes that are tied to that specific hero’s path.
Scrap Tickets — The July 1 Fix
Valve added Scrap Tickets in the July 1 update after players complained about path inefficiency. Scrap is simpler: every regular or Turbo match rewards Scrap regardless of hero and regardless of win or loss. Six Scrap convert to one Hero Ticket of your choice — this is what lets you repair a bad Hero Ticket path without being forced to queue a hero that is weak in your MMR range.
| Queue Type | Scrap Per Game | Win Required? | Games Needed for 1 Hero Ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular (All Pick, Ranked, etc.) | 2 Scrap | No | 3 games |
| Turbo | 1 Scrap | No | 6 games |
For most players, the practical advice is this: queue whatever you normally queue. Regular games are more efficient per Scrap, but if you are doing casual Turbo sessions, those contribute too. You are not wasting time anymore — every match pushes the event forward.
Seeing Stones
Seeing Stones are used at The Oracle, a side system that offers daily progress and bonus rewards. After the July 1 update, Seeing Stones can be earned by playing co-op bot matches on Hard or Unfair difficulty. This matters because Oracle progress had been one of the more frustrating grinds before the update — the co-op bot route makes daily Oracle visits low-effort and low-stress, which is ideal for players who want event progress without risking ranked games on suboptimal heroes.
Carnival Tickets
Carnival Tickets are a separate currency earned specifically through the Chapter 3 Automaton Attack mini-game. Unlike Hero Tickets, these are not tied to any specific hero path — they are used to unlock specific cosmetic nodes and extras within the Chapter 3 section of the Train map. See the mini-games section below for the exact scoring thresholds.

Train Map Rewards — What the Free Path Unlocks
The Train is the central hub of the Dark Carnival. It is a linear map with branching paths, where each node costs a specific Hero Ticket combination to unlock. Unlocking a node grants either a story scene or a cosmetic reward. Over three chapters, Valve has added significant new terrain to the Train, expanding both the cosmetic haul and the story content available.
What Train Map Nodes Give You
Story nodes advance the Dark Carnival narrative — Ringmaster’s scheme, the heroes who oppose or assist, and the setpieces Valve has built for each chapter. These are largely cosmetic in impact but are time-gated: once the event ends, these scenes are locked forever. If the story is a reason you are playing the event, do not delay.
Cosmetic nodes grant specific items. These include:
- Hero-specific cosmetic pieces tied to the Carnival theme
- Portrait frames and decorative effects
- Profile content unlocks
- Discount Coins (spendable in Candyworks)
- Bonus Seeing Stones at certain milestone nodes
The most efficient route through the Train is to identify which hero’s path has cosmetics you actually want, then focus Hero Ticket farming on that hero. Spreading ticket farming across too many heroes slows everything down. Use Scrap conversion to supplement Hero Tickets when you are one or two short of a node unlock.
Chapter-by-Chapter Expansion
Valve released the Dark Carnival in three chapters, each adding new Train sections:
- Chapter 1 (June 22, 2026): The base Train launched with the opening act, introducing the hero path system and The Oracle.
- Chapter 2 — Midnight Run (early July 2026): Added new Train terrain, ticket gifting, and the Blimp Jump and Pick the Lock mini-games.
- Chapter 3 — Midnight Run (July 23, 2026): Added the Cauldron Car, Engine Car, and Automaton Attack sections of the Train, plus the Ringmaster Announcer Pack and the five Automaton Personas in the Emporium.
Candyworks Shop — Event Store Rewards
The Candyworks is the Dark Carnival’s version of an event shop. You spend Candy Sacks (accumulated through match play and some Train node rewards) to claim items directly. The July 1 update improved the Candyworks by adding an ownership indicator — the shop now shows if you already own an offered item, which prevents accidentally spending Candy Sacks on something you already have.
The Candyworks rotates available items and also includes a re-roll mechanic, letting you cycle through the item pool if the current offer is not what you want. Discount Coins (earned from select Train nodes) can reduce the Candy Sack cost of specific Candyworks items — always use Discount Coins on higher-cost items for maximum savings.
The Oracle — Bonus Daily Rewards
The Oracle is the Dark Carnival’s daily bonus system. You spend Seeing Stones to activate Oracle encounters, which grant additional rewards outside the main Train path. These include bonus Hero Tickets, Candy Sacks, Discount Coins, and occasionally cosmetic items that are not available through any other Dark Carnival system.
The Oracle has a daily reset. Visiting every day and spending Seeing Stones is worth doing even during low-effort sessions. The Hard or Unfair co-op bot route for earning Seeing Stones is fast — faster than most ranked games on a per-minute basis — so Oracle farming does not have to compete with your actual Dota sessions.
Oracle Reward Efficiency
The Oracle’s value-per-Seeing-Stone scales with how consistently you visit. Players who skip days lose compounding Oracle value. During the final weeks of an event, Valve has historically not increased Oracle rewards — the daily cap stays the same — which means every skipped day in the final window is a permanent loss.
If you are behind on Oracle progress, prioritize co-op bot matches first to rebuild a Seeing Stone reserve, then spend daily until the event closes.
Chapter 3 Mini-Games and Their Ticket Rewards
Chapter 3 added three mini-game encounters to the Train: Automaton Attack, Cauldron Car, and Engine Car. Each is a separate encounter node. Cauldron Car and Engine Car are story-integrated encounters with cosmetic payoffs tied to their completion. Automaton Attack is the only mini-game that generates Carnival Tickets directly.
Automaton Attack — Carnival Ticket Scoring Guide
Automaton Attack is a typing game using Dota 2 vocabulary — hero names, item names, ability names. The scoring has specific thresholds that matter:
| Score Threshold | Reward | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 points | Advance to next difficulty level | Achievable on first attempt for most players |
| 10,000 points | 3 Carnival Tickets | Primary target — best tickets-per-minute ratio |
| 20,000 points | 5 Carnival Tickets total | Worth pushing if your typing pace is fast |
The practical benchmark is 10,000 points per session. At a moderate typing pace, reaching 10,000 takes 5 to 10 minutes of active play — a significantly better Ticket-per-minute rate than playing an additional match. Past 20,000 there are no additional Carnival Ticket gates, so stop there unless you are competing on the leaderboard.
Automaton Attack Tips
- Always type lowercase. The game accepts lowercase input. Reaching for Shift kills your words-per-minute and costs score at higher difficulty levels.
- Prioritize shorter words when multiple appear simultaneously. Clearing easier words first builds score multipliers faster.
- Know the hyphen behavior. Items with hyphens may accept input without the hyphen — try both if a word fails.
- Stay at a difficulty level where your accuracy stays above 90%. Higher difficulty gives more points per word, but accuracy below 90% makes it slower overall.
- Dota vocabulary is your edge. Words like “Refresher,” “Diffusal,” “Satanic,” and “Aghanim” are unusually long but deeply familiar to experienced players. You can type them faster than equivalent-length general English words.
Cauldron Car and Engine Car
Cauldron Car and Engine Car are the other two encounter nodes added in Chapter 3. Both are encounter-based mini-games (rather than open-ended scoring sessions) that complete in a single run and gate progression to the next Train section. Completing them unlocks the path forward and yields the cosmetic rewards tied to their respective Train nodes.

Emporium of Curiosities — Purchasable Rewards
The Emporium of Curiosities is the Dark Carnival’s paid cosmetic shop. It operates separately from the ticket and Scrap systems — items here are purchased directly rather than earned through gameplay. There are two main categories of purchasable content.
Automaton Personas (x5) — $14.99 Each
Five heroes received full Automaton Persona cosmetics for the Dark Carnival event. Each persona is a complete hero transformation: new model, fully custom animations for all abilities, updated ability icons, new visual effects, and new voice lines. These are not simple reskins — they are among the deepest cosmetic treatments Valve has released for this type of event.
Each persona is sold individually at $14.99 from the Emporium of Curiosities. Axe is widely considered the best value among the five, based on cosmetic execution and hero viability at most MMR brackets — the hero sees significant play at all levels, so the persona gets actual use rather than sitting idle. For a full breakdown of all five personas ranked by value, see our Chapter 3 guide covering all Automaton Personas.
The paid shop may stay open after the event closes, but Valve has no stated commitment to keep these items available indefinitely. Based on the Crownfall precedent, where paid items were eventually removed from the event shop, treating the current purchase window as time-limited is the safer assumption.
Ringmaster Announcer Pack
The Ringmaster Announcer Pack is the other notable Emporium item. It replaces the default game announcer with Ringmaster’s voice, with custom lines covering kills, streaks, objective events, and end-of-game outcomes. Announcer packs in Dota 2 are permanent account items and do not expire when an event closes. If the pack is removed from the Emporium at event end, you will not be able to purchase it until Valve re-lists it (which may not happen on any predictable schedule).
The Fastest Routes to Every Reward Before the Deadline
With the event in its final window, efficiency matters more than grinding. Here is how to prioritize your remaining play sessions.
For Free Reward Maximization
The most time-efficient free reward loop right now is:
- Identify your highest-value Train node. Check which uncompleted node on your current hero path has the cosmetic or milestone you want most. That is your Hero Ticket target for the session.
- Queue Regular matches over Turbo. Regular games give 2 Scrap vs Turbo’s 1. Use your hero-of-choice for that path. Wins give full Hero Ticket sets for that hero; Scrap supplements the gaps.
- Run Automaton Attack every Chapter 3 session. 5 to 10 minutes for 3 Carnival Tickets is the best tickets-per-minute rate available. Always hit 10,000 minimum. Push to 20,000 if your pace is hot.
- Do daily Oracle visits first. Open Dota, do co-op bot Hard/Unfair for Seeing Stones, visit The Oracle, then queue normal sessions. Oracle reward is capped daily and skipping is permanent loss.
- Check Candyworks after each session. The item pool rotates. Items you want may appear and rotate out within days of the event closing.
For Paid Reward Decisions
If you are deciding whether to buy an Automaton Persona or the Ringmaster Announcer Pack:
- Buy for heroes you actually play at your MMR bracket. A persona for a hero you queue once every 50 games is dead investment.
- Axe personas have the widest practical utility — Axe appears in most MMR ranges as a core and offlaner, so the cosmetic gets real visibility.
- Announcer packs are permanent and hero-agnostic. If you like Ringmaster’s character from the event story, the announcer pack extends that experience across every future game you play.
What to Prioritize Before Dark Carnival Ends
Time is the actual constraint now. Here is a tiered list based on what is irreplaceable vs what is lower urgency.
| Priority | Reward Type | Why Now |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Highest | Train map story nodes you have not unlocked | Story content is permanently time-gated — closes with the event, never returns |
| 2 | Train map cosmetic nodes on your active hero path | These cosmetics are only earnable during the event window |
| 3 | Oracle daily visits (Seeing Stones) | Daily cap — every skipped day is a permanent loss in the final stretch |
| 4 | Candyworks items you want | Pool rotates and may not resurface before close |
| 5 | Emporium purchasables (personas, announcer) | Shop may stay open briefly post-event — but no guarantee; treat as time-limited |
| 6 — Lowest | Mini-game leaderboard pushes | Nice to have, but Carnival Ticket rewards from 10,000-point runs are sufficient |
Players who are behind on MMR while also trying to grind the event face a real conflict. If you are in an MMR bracket where every game matters, consider splitting your sessions cleanly: event-only sessions using Turbo or co-op bot routes (to protect your ranked MMR from off-hero picks), and separate ranked sessions where you play your actual hero pool. The July 1 update’s Scrap system supports this split because Turbo and regular both contribute, even if at different rates.
If you are significantly behind on MMR and the recalibration window is approaching, it may be more efficient to focus ranked climb now and treat the remaining event rewards as secondary. For players in this position, professional Dota 2 boosting can compress the ranked grind into a shorter window, freeing you to finish the event before it closes. Some players use a service to stabilize their MMR during heavy event seasons — rather than grinding both at the same time and doing neither well.
For anyone who wants to understand the risk side of that decision, our Dota 2 boosting safety guide covers the risk factors honestly. The core takeaway is that method and provider choice matter significantly for account security during a boost.
Dark Carnival End Date — What You Need to Know
Valve has not announced an official end date for the Dark Carnival as of August 23, 2026. The most reliable estimate based on Crownfall precedent is late August or early September 2026. Valve typically announces end dates about two weeks before closure via the Steam news feed for Dota 2 (store.steampowered.com/news/app/570).
For the full end-date analysis including historical event durations and what happens to your tickets after the event closes, see our dedicated post: Dota 2 Dark Carnival End Date and Full Schedule.
The key practical points:
- Unused Hero Tickets and Scrap Tickets likely expire at event close based on Crownfall precedent.
- Purchased Emporium items (personas, announcer) are permanent and do not expire.
- Train map nodes you have unlocked but not “opened” may not yield their cosmetics after the event closes — always claim node rewards immediately after unlocking.
- Candyworks and The Oracle close with the main event.
