Mars Guide 7.41f: Build, Skill Order and Matchups

Mars Dota 2 guide 7.41f featured art, Mars in his Arena of Blood

Mars is the strangest hero on the 7.41f balance sheet. Valve has buffed him in four patches in a row, from 7.41c through 7.41f, and the latest one on September 15, 2026 gave him +1 base armor. Yet on October 14, 2026, OpenDota’s last-seven-days public data still has him at 47.9% across 158,137 picks, ranked 98th out of 127 heroes by win rate. This Mars guide for 7.41f explains why, and whether the numbers are a warning or an opportunity.

The short answer: Mars is not weak because his kit is bad. He is weak in the first 25 minutes and strong after 35, and most ranked games are decided before the strong part arrives. If you can solve the early game, the same data says he is a late-game team-fight hero that wins more than the average pick. If you cannot, there are easier offlaners to climb with right now.

This post covers every Mars change since 7.41, the current ability numbers straight from Valve’s data feed, a skill order, an item build, the matchups that hurt him, and exactly when to lock him in. For the wider patch picture, read our 7.41f patch notes guide and the 7.41f offlane guide first.

What Changed for Mars in 7.41f

Mars received one change in 7.41f: base armor increased by 1. That is the entire hero entry in Valve’s official 7.41f patch notes. It is a small buff, but a melee offlaner lives and dies on how much damage he takes in the first ten minutes, and armor is the one stat that helps in every single exchange.

The patch itself went live on September 15, 2026, and it is still the latest numbered gameplay patch in Valve’s patch list as of October 14. There is no 7.42 date yet, so everything in this guide stays current for the foreseeable future.

The more interesting story is the trend. Pulling every patch entry from the official feed, Mars has been touched in seven separate updates since 7.40, and the direction has flipped. The early changes nerfed him. Every change since 7.41c has been a buff.

When Valve buffs the same hero four patches running with small tweaks, it usually means their own data says he is underperforming and they are nudging rather than fixing. That matches what the public numbers show below. Mars is not a hero the balance team wants gone. He is a hero they keep trying to make a little better without turning him into a must-pick.

Tip: The 7.41 rework matters more than any buff since. Arena of Blood is now the Scepter ability, not Bulwark. If you learned Mars before March 2026, your item priorities and your whole mid-game plan are different now. Read the kit section below before you trust an old build.

Is Mars Good Right Now?

Mars wins 47.9% of public matches and gets better the longer the game goes. That is the honest read of OpenDota’s last-seven-days data, pulled on October 14, 2026. He was picked in about 3.8% of all public matches, which puts him 99th of 127 heroes by pick count and 98th by win rate. The average win rate across all heroes in that dataset is 50.0%.

Here is the rank-by-rank picture. It is remarkably flat, which tells you the problem is not skill floor or skill ceiling. It is the hero’s shape.

Rank bracketMars picksMars winsWin rate

Legend39,43618,93548.0%
Ancient28,61613,80048.2%
Divine21,0209,98147.5%

OpenDota records no Immortal-bracket rows for Mars in this feed, so we cannot say anything about the top of the ladder from this source. Turbo is similar: 30,775 wins from 62,932 picks, which is 48.9%.

Now the number that actually explains him. OpenDota’s duration table, which is a smaller sample of about 30,000 games, shows Mars climbing steadily as the match gets longer. Each row is a five-minute bucket starting at the listed minute.

Game length bucketGamesMars win rate
15 minutes93743.0%
20 minutes3,58646.0%
25 minutes6,24947.0%
30 minutes7,15147.2%

40 minutes3,36749.6%
45 minutes1,69251.1%
50 minutes1,03250.3%
55 minutes51551.1%

Read that table twice. A Mars game that ends in the 15-minute bucket is a 43% win rate. A Mars game that reaches the 45-minute bucket is 51%. Part of this is survivorship: a team that is winning early with Mars will win in the shorter buckets and a team that is losing will drag on. Still, the slope is steep and consistent, and it fits the kit. The things that make Mars special, Arena of Blood with a Scepter and a big shielded frame, show up in the mid game, not at minute eight.

Reality check: Win rate by game length is correlated with who is ahead, so it cannot prove cause. Treat it as a pattern to build a plan around, not a law. The plan: survive the lane, farm to Blink Dagger, and make the first Arena of Blood count.

One more data point for context. OpenDota’s pro window shows Mars with only 7 picks, 5 bans and 2 wins. That is too small to draw a conclusion, but it suggests he is not part of the current professional offlane rotation, so do not expect tournament drafts to tell you much about him.

Mars Kit Breakdown With Current Numbers

Mars is a melee strength hero with a long-range stun, a counter-attack crit, a damage-blocking shield and a team-fight cage. The numbers below come directly from Valve’s Dota 2 hero data feed, so they reflect 7.41f exactly. Base stats at level 1: 23 strength (+3.7 per level), 18 agility (+1.7), 21 intelligence (+2.4), 310 movement speed, 250 attack range, 1.8 base attack time, 49-57 damage, 626 health and 327 mana.

Spear of Mars

The Spear is the reason Mars gets drafted. A stun that reaches 1,200 range at level 4 and lasts up to 2.2 seconds is rare on a hero this tanky. The pin rule from the in-game notes is the part most players miss: the Spear only pins to cliffs when the cliff is on higher ground. Otherwise it pushes the target off onto the lower level. Learn which trees and cliff edges on your lane are pinning surfaces and aim to put the enemy into them.

God’s Rebuke

Rebuke crits scale from 150% at level 1 to 300% at level 4, and it has True Strike, so evasion and miss effects do not save the target. The in-game notes confirm that attack modifiers can proc on Rebuke attacks, which is why Mars items that add on-hit effects are worth looking at. The 7.41d change also matters: when Bulwark is toggled on, casting Rebuke now turns Mars in the cast direction. That lets you toggle Bulwark to walk into a fight with the shield up, then swing in a direction you did not need to face first.

Bulwark

Bulwark’s passive block is why Mars feels hard to burst with right-click damage. The toggle is the clever part, and Valve reworked it in 7.41: it is now point-targeted, so Mars faces where you click. Inside the toggle he is phased, slowed by 18%, cannot attack, and redirects 70% of the attack projectiles aimed at allies within 900 range back into himself. Per the in-game notes, the redirect only works for allies standing in a cone behind Mars or within 100 range of him, and Break disables the shield’s front and side damage reduction.

Dauntless

Dauntless is a passive that rewards getting outnumbered. After 7.41 it ignores your allies entirely, so standing next to your own support does not turn it off or reduce it. Valve then raised its radius from 700 to 900 in 7.41d, which makes it trigger in more scrappy fights than it used to.

Arena of Blood

The Arena is the hero. Enemy heroes near its inner edge are speared for 80/170/260 damage and knocked back, and the ring blocks both attacks and movement. After 7.41, the Aghanim’s Scepter improves it directly: cooldown drops by 10 seconds (so 90/85/80s instead of 100/95/90s), duration rises from 5.5s to 6.5s, and when an enemy dies inside the Arena, Mars and every ally inside restore 35% of max health and mana and gain a 35% attack damage buff for 20 seconds. That buff stacks. A single clean Arena with the Scepter can swing a team fight and the rest of the map afterward.

Skill Order and Talents

Take Spear of Mars first, then God’s Rebuke, and put Bulwark last. This is the standard analyst approach for a melee offlaner whose power is in burst and control, not in the passive block. Valve does not publish a recommended order, so treat the sequence below as our recommendation, not an official one.

LevelSkillWhy
1Spear of MarsThe lane stun is your threat. It pins into trees to set up kills and forces the enemy to respect your range
2God’s RebukeWave clear and burst. The crit on a stunned target is the main damage combo
3Spear of MarsMore damage and range, lower cooldown
4God’s RebukeKeeps the combo reliable
5Spear of MarsThree levels means 250 damage and a 1.9s stun
6Arena of BloodFirst real power spike. The cage can steal an objective fight
7 and onSpear, then Rebuke, then Bulwark. Arena at 12 and 18Bulwark is your tankiness skill, so level it when the fights get bigger

Talents we can confirm

Valve’s patch history lets us verify several Mars talents. At level 10, the talent is +1.5 mana regen after 7.41 replaced the old Dauntless regen talent. At level 15, there is a talent that cuts God’s Rebuke cooldown by 2.5 seconds (raised from 2 seconds in 7.40b). At level 20, you choose between +0.5 seconds on the Spear stun and +70 Arena of Blood spear damage. The ability data also shows a Spear damage talent worth +100, a Rebuke crit talent worth +65 crit multiplier and +100 distance, and a team health regen talent attached to Arena of Blood. We cannot match every one of those to a talent level from the feed alone, so check the in-game tree before you commit.

For ranked, our pick is the Rebuke cooldown at 15 and the longer Spear stun at 20, because extra stun time turns every pin into a guaranteed Rebuke plus a Blink-and-Arena follow-up. Take the +70 Arena damage option only if your team is built around Arena fights and you rarely land the Spear.

Mars Item Build for 7.41f

Phase Boots, Blink Dagger, Black King Bar and the Aghanim’s Scepter are the Mars core. OpenDota’s item popularity table backs this up, although we should be honest about the sample: the logged start-game purchases top out at 172 games, so this is a small dataset and should be read as direction, not precision.

PhaseMost common purchases (OpenDota count)
StartIron Branch (172), Gauntlets of Strength (159), Tango (76), Quelling Blade (49)
EarlyBracer (106), Boots of Speed (98), Chainmail (81), Soul Ring (78), Phase Boots (65)
MidBlink Dagger (91), Mithril Hammer (54), Aghanim’s Shard (54), Ogre Axe (44), Phase Boots (33), Staff of Wizardry (28), Eul’s Scepter (23), Black King Bar (15)
LateBlack King Bar (41), Mystic Staff (28), Scythe of Vyse (23), Reaver (11), Aghanim’s Scepter (8), Refresher Orb (8), Shiva’s Guard (6), Overwhelming Blink (6)

The standard path

  • Early: Gauntlets, Iron Branch, Tango and a Quelling Blade or Circlet. Make Bracer and Soul Ring, then Phase Boots. Soul Ring turns spare health into mana for repeated Spear casts.
  • Mid: Blink Dagger first. It lets you close on the target you want to cage. Then the Aghanim’s Shard, which gives the Spear a fire trail dealing 40 damage per second for 10 seconds with a 20% slow, and lets it impale more than one hero.
  • Core fight item: Black King Bar. Your plan is to land Arena of Blood in the middle of the enemy team and stay alive inside it. A silence or hex that interrupts the cast is the main way Mars fails.
  • Scepter timing: Aghanim’s Scepter is the item that makes the late-game win rate real. Cooldown 90/85/80s, duration 6.5s and the kill buff turn Arena into a repeatable team-fight engine.
  • Situational: Scythe of Vyse for pick-off, Shiva’s Guard against right-click heroes, Heart of Tarrasque for pure sturdiness, Overwhelming Blink if the game is already won and you want to end it.

Laning and Early Game

Your job in the first ten minutes is to avoid dying and keep farming, not to win the lane. The 43% win rate in games that end by minute 20 says the early game is where Mars loses. Play to that weakness.

  • Use Spear for trades, not for kills. Without a follow-up you rarely kill, but a 1.3 to 1.9 second stun with a pin gives you a free Rebuke hit and a free retreat.
  • Hit the Rebuke cone on creeps and heroes together. Wave clear with a cone crit lets you farm under tower without exposing yourself to harass.
  • Use Bulwark’s passive. Face enemy melee heroes so the front block takes the hit. Side hits are blocked at half the rate, and back hits are not blocked at all.
  • Plan your mana. The common builds open Bracer and Soul Ring because the Spear costs 90 to 120 mana and you are not going to land every cast.
Tip: Against heavy lane harass, do not fight for the creep wave. Hold the Rebuke, stay near the tower, and take free last hits. A Mars that reaches level 6 alive with a Blink Dagger in progress is still a threat. A Mars that has died twice is not.

Mid Game and Late Game Plan

After level 6, play Mars as a controller whose job is to land one decisive Arena of Blood. The sequence below is the pattern.

  1. Find the target. Look for the enemy core who has no escape, or the clump of heroes you can see standing near Roshan or a Tormentor.
  2. Blink in, then Arena. The Arena has a short 0.1 second formation time per the data, so it is fast. Cast it so that the enemy core is on the inner edge, not so that you are in the middle with them.
  3. Spear before or after. Pin whoever is trying to leave. The ring blocks movement, so Spear on a target near the ring edge often chains into an impale.
  4. Rebuke the target that is stuck. At level 4, 300% crit plus bonus damage versus heroes is your burst.
  5. With Scepter, the kill buff does the rest. A single kill inside the ring heals your team by 35% and grants a damage buff for 20 seconds, so push the advantage immediately.
Mars raising Bulwark shield to block and redirect projectiles, Mars guide 7.41f

That sequence is why the late game is where Mars becomes a real pick. The enemy supports you wanted to stop from jumping onto your carry are stuck behind a wall of undead spears, and the fight starts after they are already off their rotation. Roshan fights are a particularly good fit: an Arena around the pit locks out the other team while your own team takes the Aegis.

The danger is the same dependence on one cast. If a Silence, Hex, Stun or Fear lands on you before the Arena goes down, the fight is over before it began. That is why Black King Bar is not optional on Mars. It is the item that lets the Arena finish.

Best Partners and Combos

Mars wants teammates who punish enemies who are stuck, not heroes who rely on being safe far from the fight. The pool below is based on how the kit works. It is analysis, not win-rate data, since OpenDota’s synergy tables for this hero are too thin to quote.

  • Area-of-effect damage dealers. Heroes that deal burst or damage over time to a clump fit perfectly with Arena. Warlock’s Fatal Bonds and Upheaval and Disruptor’s Static Storm are the classic examples, and Warlock got a +5 base attack speed buff in 7.41f.
  • Reach heroes. Batrider’s Flaming Lasso and Disruptor’s Kinetic Field help hold targets on the edge of the ring. Batrider also got an intelligence gain buff in 7.41f.
  • Chen. Chen’s Strength gain was buffed in 7.41f, and his camps and summons give your team extra pressure while you hold a cage.
  • Carries who want a space. A cage that blocks enemy attacks and movement is the best thing you can give a slow-farming hero who needs three seconds to win a fight.

You can also try pairing with disciplined supports from our 7.41f support guide to enable smoke ganks on cores who stray from their lanes.

What Beats Mars

Mars loses to heroes who avoid the Spear, are not impressed by the Arena, or out-sustain a melee fighter. OpenDota’s matchup table gives a direction for who he struggles against. The sample is thin: about 17,500 games spread across all the hero pairs, so every entry below is a few hundred games at most. Use it as a hint, not a verdict.

Enemy heroGamesMars win rate against
Phoenix17238.4%
Shadow Demon30240.1%
Ember Spirit28541.4%
Slardar26641.7%
Tiny30642.8%
Invoker18843.6%

Windranger26844.0%
Dawnbreaker17457.5%
Ogre Magi23952.3%
Skywrath Mage20752.2%
Viper16451.2%

The first eight rows are Mars’s worst matchups in the table. The last four are among his best in the table. A pattern appears. Slippery, mobile heroes like Ember Spirit, Void Spirit and Windranger can avoid the Spear, while heroes with their own burst and stun like Tiny and Slardar punish an offlaner who is trying to survive his first 10 minutes. On the favorable side, Dawnbreaker is the surprise at 57.5% over 174 games, and low-mobility heroes like Ogre Magi, Skywrath Mage and Viper have a hard time leaving an Arena once it lands.

One 7.41f note stands out: Slardar was nerfed in this patch (Crush damage 75/150/225/300 down to 60/140/220/300, and base health regen down by 0.25), yet he is still one of Mars’s worst matchups in the sample. Do not assume the nerf fixed that lane.

How to play against Mars

  • Buy Break. The in-game notes say Break disables Bulwark’s front and side damage reduction. Silver Edge is the cleanest answer.
  • Do not stand in a line with trees behind you. A pinned target is stunned for the full duration. Move a step to the side before he casts.
  • Respect the Blink. If Mars has Blink Dagger, assume the Arena is coming in the next team fight and keep your carries from standing in a pack.
  • Bait the Arena. The cooldown is 100/95/90s without a Scepter. Fight him after he uses it.
  • Kill him before level 6. The win rate by game length says the early game is where he is vulnerable. If your lane is winning, press.

When to Pick Mars in Ranked

Pick Mars when your draft can survive the first 25 minutes and has no strong tempo lineup against it. This is a hero for matches that you expect to last 35 minutes or longer.

  • Pick him when the enemy team lacks mobile escape heroes, you have a reliable position 1 who needs time to farm, and your team has area-of-effect damage to follow the Arena.
  • Avoid him when the enemy has Ember Spirit, Void Spirit, Windranger or a heavy-harass duo lane. The data flags all of those as bad matchups.
  • Take other offlaners when your team wants to win fast. Our 7.41f offlane guide covers heroes with stronger early spikes. In 7.41f, Centaur Warrunner, Slardar, Clockwerk, Undying and Treant Protector were all nerfed, so Mars was one of the few offlaners that did not get weaker.
  • Draft him late. His value is highest when the other team cannot react to him with a counter pick.

The Bottom Line

Mars in 7.41f is a late-game team-fight hero with an early-game problem. He wins 47.9% of public games overall, 43% when the game ends around minute 15 to 20, and 51% when it reaches the 45-minute mark. The +1 armor in 7.41f is a small step in the right direction, and four straight buffs suggest Valve wants him to be better, but the shape of the hero has not changed.

If you play him, make your first 20 minutes about survival and Blink Dagger timing, buy Black King Bar before the fights get big, and treat Arena of Blood with a Scepter as the whole plan. If you want a stronger climb with fewer conditions, the 7.41f hero tier list has options that win more consistently at any game length.

If the ladder itself is the problem, reading about it will not fix it. Our comparison of the best Dota 2 boosting services, the MMR boosting guide and our honest answer on whether Dota 2 boosting is safe are the places to start.

FAQ

Q What changed for Mars in patch 7.41f?
Mars received a single buff in 7.41f: base armor increased by 1. It follows buffs in 7.41c, 7.41d and 7.41e, so he has been buffed in four consecutive patches. The patch went live on September 15, 2026.
Q Is Mars good in 7.41f?
Mars is below average overall. OpenDota’s last-seven-days data on October 14, 2026 shows a 47.9% public win rate from 158,137 picks, ranked 98th of 127 heroes. He gets stronger as games go longer, reaching about 51% in 45-minute games, so he suits drafts that can survive the early game.
Q What is the best Mars item build?
Start with Gauntlets and an Iron Branch, build Bracer and Soul Ring into Phase Boots, then buy Blink Dagger, the Aghanim’s Shard and Black King Bar. Aghanim’s Scepter is the key late item because it cuts the Arena of Blood cooldown by 10 seconds and adds a healing and damage buff on kills.
Q What is the best Mars skill order?
Take Spear of Mars first, God’s Rebuke second, and level Arena of Blood at 6, 12 and 18. Max Spear first, then Rebuke, and leave Bulwark for last. Valve does not publish a standard order, so this is our recommendation based on the kit.
Q Who counters Mars?
OpenDota’s matchup table shows Mars struggling most against Phoenix, Shadow Demon, Ember Spirit, Slardar and Tiny, though each sample is only a few hundred games. Mobile heroes avoid the Spear, and Break effects such as Silver Edge turn off Bulwark’s damage reduction.
Q What does Aghanim’s Scepter do for Mars?
Since 7.41, the Scepter upgrades Arena of Blood: the cooldown drops by 10 seconds, the duration increases from 5.5 to 6.5 seconds, and if an enemy is killed in the Arena, Mars and his allies inside restore 35% of max health and mana and gain a 35% attack damage buff for 20 seconds. The buff stacks.
Q Is 7.41f still the current Dota 2 patch?
Yes. Valve’s official patch list ends at 7.41f, released on September 15, 2026, and no 7.42 date has been announced as of October 14, 2026.
