BKB vs Linken’s vs Lotus Orb: The Decision Guide
You are in the shop with 4,000 gold and the enemy team has a Bane, a Legion Commander, and a Pudge breathing down your neck. Three different support players on three different streams will tell you three different answers: buy BKB, buy Linken’s, buy Lotus Orb. All three items are defensive. All three items block spells. And all three items will cost you a teamfight if you buy the wrong one.
This guide cuts through the confusion. We break down exactly what each item does, what it does NOT do (which is where most players go wrong), and give you a clear decision framework for every role and every threat pattern. All stats verified against patch 7.41d.

Black King Bar — Full Breakdown
BKB is the oldest and most misunderstood defensive item in Dota 2. Most players know it gives immunity. Far fewer players know exactly what that immunity covers — and the gaps in that immunity have ended countless games at the highest ranks.

What Avatar Actually Does
When you activate Avatar, BKB applies a basic dispel to you and then grants you debuff immunity for the duration. During this window, negative effects from enemy spells that do not pierce debuff immunity have no effect on you. Your magic resistance also jumps to 60%, and you become immune to reflected and pure damage — but only from sources that are blocked by debuff immunity.
There is one piece of the stat block that gets overlooked: the duration decay. Your first Avatar activation lasts 9 seconds. Your second lasts 8 seconds. Your third lasts 7 seconds. This decay is permanent for that item — you cannot buy a second BKB to reset it. This is a critical mechanic because it means BKB gets significantly weaker as the game extends, and timing your first activation well is more important than most players realize.
The Duration Decay in Practice
At 9 seconds you can walk through an entire teamfight untouched. At 7 seconds you have just enough time to land your combo and disengage, but you cannot afford to waste the early seconds positioning. Once you hit 7 seconds, many players start reconsidering whether BKB is still their best option or whether Linken’s provides better value for that game state.
What BKB Blocks
BKB blocks spells that do not pierce debuff immunity. In practice this covers the vast majority of crowd control in the game:
- Stuns, slows, silences, and hexes that are not flagged as pierce-debuff-immunity
- Most channeled disables (except the ones noted below)
- Blinding effects and attack modifiers that come from spells
- Most root effects and movement impairs
- Magic damage from spells you are already immune to
What BKB Does NOT Block
This section is more important than the one above. Most BKB deaths happen because the player thought Avatar would protect them from something it does not block. These are the most common culprits in patch 7.41d:
Spells That Pierce BKB (Debuff Immunity) — Verify Every Game
- Legion Commander’s Duel — Duel pierces debuff immunity. BKB will not save you from being dueled.
- Pudge’s Dismember — The channel pierces debuff immunity. Pudge can Dismember you while your BKB is active.
- Bane’s Fiend’s Grip — Pierces debuff immunity. One of the most common BKB counters in the game.
- Doom’s Doom — Pierces debuff immunity and also silences all your items, including BKB if it is not already active.
- Dark Willow’s Terrorize — Pierces debuff immunity.
- Primal Beast’s Onslaught — Pierces debuff immunity.
- Death Prophet’s Silence — The initial silence pierces debuff immunity.
- Shotgun effects and some kill-threshold passives — behavior depends on the specific hero and patch; always verify.
Before you spend 3,500 gold on BKB, identify the enemy hero who is deleting you and confirm that their key spell does not pierce debuff immunity. If it does, BKB is the wrong purchase — you need either Linken’s (to block the spell from landing once) or Eul’s Scepter (to dodge the timing), or you need to simply outplay the window.

Linken’s Sphere — Full Breakdown
Linken’s Sphere is a different category of item. BKB is about buying a window of total immunity on a long cooldown. Linken’s is about passively negating the one spell the enemy is using to initiate on you — every 14 seconds, without you having to press anything.
Patch 7.41d Stats
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Cost | ~4,800 gold (Perseverance + Ultimate Orb + Recipe) |
| Bonus All Attributes | +16 |
| Health Regeneration | +6.5 per second |
| Mana Regeneration | +4.25 per second |
| Passive: Spellblock cooldown | 14 seconds |
| Active: Transfer Spellblock | Give Spellblock to an ally for 14 seconds |
| Transfer active cooldown | 14 seconds |
How Spellblock Works
Linken’s Sphere grants a passive Spellblock that refreshes every 14 seconds. When a targeted spell hits you, Spellblock absorbs the spell — it does not fire, you take no effect, and the Spellblock goes on a 14-second cooldown. After 14 seconds the Spellblock recharges automatically and you are protected again.
This sounds powerful, and it is — but only against the right threat patterns. The key limitations are:
- It only blocks targeted spells. AoE spells pass straight through. If the enemy team has Echo Slam, Black Hole, or Reverse Polarity, Linken’s does nothing.
- It can be baited. A good player will cast a cheap targeted spell at you (like a Poison Touch or a Shackle) to pop your Spellblock before the kill spell lands. At higher MMR, Linken’s is significantly weaker because enemies exploit this bait window.
- It does not dispel. Unlike BKB and Lotus Orb, Linken’s Sphere has no dispel on its active. If you already have a hex or a stun on you, Linken’s will not remove it.
- Neutral item targeted spells do not trigger Spellblock. This is a confirmed interaction — Spellblock ignores targeted abilities from neutral items.
The Transfer Active
The active on Linken’s Sphere is genuinely underused. You can transfer the Spellblock buff to an ally for 14 seconds, giving them the same one-spell block window. This is extremely powerful when the enemy has a single targeted ultimate (like Fiend’s Grip or Duel) and you need to protect your carry. It also means a support can buy Linken’s and use it entirely as a defensive tool for their cores — keeping the passive block on themselves between transfers and giving it away before a key fight.
Note from patch changelogs: Successive Transfer Spellblock buffs now refresh their duration instead of applying multiple instances. You cannot stack multiple Linken’s transfers on the same target.
Who Should Buy Linken’s Sphere
Linken’s is strongest on heroes who have one specific, game-ending targeted spell coming for them from one specific hero. Classic examples in 7.41d:
- Carries building against a Bane who lives to Fiend’s Grip them
- Bounty Hunter or Slark against a single-target disable lineup
- Storm Spirit or Puck against a Doom — when Doom is not yet active, Linken’s passively blocks it
- Any hero who is the primary kill target but the kill combo starts with one specific spell every time
Lotus Orb — Full Breakdown
Lotus Orb occupies a unique role: it is the only one of these three items that can be cast on an ally, and it is the only one that turns enemy targeted spells into weapons against the caster. It is less about protecting yourself from damage and more about punishing your opponent for targeting you.
Patch 7.41d Stats
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Cost | 3,850 gold (Perseverance + Platemail + Energy Booster + Recipe) |
| Bonus Armor | +10 |
| Health Regeneration | +6.5 per second |
| Mana Regeneration | +4.0 per second |
| Bonus Mana | +250 |
| Active: Echo Shell duration | 5 seconds |
| Cooldown | 15 seconds |
| Mana cost | 175 |
| Dispel type on cast | Basic dispel |
How Echo Shell Works
When you activate Lotus Orb on a unit (yourself or an ally), that unit gains a 5-second shield called Echo Shell. Any targeted spell that hits the shielded unit during those 5 seconds is reflected back to the caster — the spell fires again at the person who cast it. However, the shielded unit still takes damage from the spell. Echo Shell does not prevent damage; it just re-casts the spell at the enemy.
This distinction matters: you cannot Lotus Orb yourself as an emergency survival tool the way you might pop BKB. The reflected spell still hurts you. The value is in the reflected effect landing on the enemy — a Pudge who casts Meat Hook into a Lotus Orb shield gets Meat Hook’d back. An enemy who casts Hex on you will also get hexed, giving your team a 5-second window to kill them.
What Lotus Orb Does NOT Reflect
Not every spell gets reflected. Key exceptions in 7.41d:
- Targeted abilities from neutral items — confirmed non-interaction, same as Linken’s
- AoE spells — only targeted spells trigger the echo
- Spells with no selectable targets — auto-attacks, passives, and persistent AoE effects are not affected
Despite these limits, the reflection list is long and includes many of the game’s most powerful targeted ultimates: Fiend’s Grip, Hex, Shadow Strike, Slardar’s Corrosive Haze (re-applies the armor debuff back on Slardar), and many others. In a game where the enemy has two or three targeted spells that can be reflected, Lotus Orb is a genuine game-changing item.
Who Should Buy Lotus Orb
Lotus Orb is most commonly bought by offlaners and soft supports. The armor and regeneration stats are excellent for frontline heroes, and the ability to cast Echo Shell on a carry who is getting focused is one of the best forms of peel in the game.

The Decision Framework
Making the right call in-game comes down to answering four questions in this order. Walk through them every time you open the shop under pressure.
Step 1: What is actually killing me?
Identify the primary source of your deaths. Is it one hero’s targeted spell? Is it AoE burst? Is it a chain of physical damage? The item you need changes completely based on the answer.
- One targeted spell from one hero — Linken’s or Lotus Orb may be sufficient and much cheaper or faster than BKB
- Multiple spells from multiple heroes — BKB is almost always correct because only BKB can block a full chain of different spells simultaneously
- Pierce-debuff-immunity spells — Neither BKB nor Linken’s will help. Consider Eul’s (to dodge the timing), Force Staff (to juke), or itemizing pure survivability (Heart, Satanic)
- Physical damage — none of these three items addresses physical damage effectively. Linken’s has attributes but BKB and Lotus Orb give no evasion or armor against auto attacks
Step 2: Am I the right target for this item?
All three items can benefit teammates, but in different ways. If you are a carry and you need to survive, you buy your own protective item. If you are an offlaner or support and your carry is the one getting blown up, Lotus Orb’s Echo Shell on the carry is often better value than the carry buying their own Linken’s — because you can use it every 15 seconds, whereas Linken’s passive only blocks once every 14 seconds and cannot be refreshed externally.
Step 3: Can I afford to be protected only once per 14 seconds?
Linken’s Sphere provides passive protection, but only once per 14 seconds. At high MMR this window gets exploited constantly. If the enemy team knows you have Linken’s they will open on you with a low-cooldown targeted spell to pop the block, then follow with the kill spell. At lower MMR this baiting pattern is less consistent, so Linken’s retains more value. Know your bracket when weighing this.
Step 4: What is the timing?
BKB costs 3,500 gold and comes online earliest. If you need protection in the mid-game before you can complete a more expensive item, BKB is almost always faster. Lotus Orb at 3,850 is slightly more expensive but still accessible mid-game. Linken’s at 4,800 is the most expensive of the three and usually lands in the early-to-mid-late game. If you are dying to one specific spell before you can afford Linken’s, buying Linken’s components (Perseverance or Ultimate Orb) provides partial protection through the attribute bonuses while you build toward it.

Role-by-Role Guide
| Role | Primary Recommendation | When to Pivot |
|---|---|---|
| Pos 1 Carry | BKB — almost always your first defensive item | Linken’s if the only threat is a single targeted disable with a long cooldown; skip Lotus Orb almost entirely |
| Pos 2 Mid | BKB for most mids that channel (SF Requiem, Crystal Maiden Freezing Field) | Linken’s for poke/burst heroes like Storm Spirit who need to avoid one targeted stun more than they need a full immunity window |
| Pos 3 Offlane | Lotus Orb — excellent armor stats for frontliners, plus the reflect punishes the melee stuns your role takes constantly | BKB if you channel an ability (Axe’s blade mail, initiator heroes that need a clean landing) |
| Pos 4 Soft Support | Lotus Orb — use Echo Shell to peel for your cores; the mana pool and armor also help you survive | Linken’s in rare cases where you are being specifically targeted for one kill spell every fight |
| Pos 5 Hard Support | Lotus Orb — cast on the carry being focused; your own survival is secondary to theirs | Linken’s only if you are playing a hero who needs to survive a specific interaction (Witch Doctor keeping channel alive against Axe Duel) |
Stacking These Items
You are not locked to one. In many late-game scenarios, carries will buy both BKB and Linken’s Sphere to cover different threat vectors. Linken’s passively blocks the targeted initiation spell before the fight, and BKB then provides immunity during the fight itself. Similarly, an offlaner might carry Lotus Orb and their carry buys BKB — the offlaner protects the carry with Echo Shell while the carry’s BKB runs out.
What you should avoid: buying all three. At 12,150 combined gold you have spent more than three full items’ worth of budget on defense alone, which means your net worth is carrying zero offensive pressure. Unless the enemy team has three distinct threats requiring three distinct counters (which happens but is rare), you are overinvesting in survivability.
Common Mistakes With These Items
Mistake 1: Buying BKB into pierce-debuff-immunity heroes
The most expensive mistake in Dota 2 itemization. You spend 3,500 gold and pop Avatar, and the enemy Pudge still Dismembers you because Pudge’s channel pierces debuff immunity. Check the enemy hero’s abilities before you buy. The list of pierce-debuff-immunity spells is shorter than you think, but the heroes that use them (LC, Pudge, Bane, Doom) appear in a huge percentage of games.
Mistake 2: Not anticipating Linken’s being baited
Linken’s Sphere is powerful at low and mid MMR where enemies do not deliberately bait it. Once you start playing above 4,000 MMR, assume any player who knows you have Linken’s will open with a cheap targeted spell to consume the block. Factor this into your decision. If the enemy initiator has two targeted spells (one cheap, one kill), Linken’s loses significant value because they will always bait the block with the first and land the kill with the second.
Mistake 3: Using Lotus Orb on yourself when the carry needs it
Lotus Orb can be cast on an ally. In many games, the correct play is to run next to your carry who is being focused, cast Echo Shell on them, and let the reflected Hex or Doom punish the enemy who just committed to a kill. Supports who reflexively cast Lotus Orb on themselves out of panic are wasting the item’s highest-value use case.
Mistake 4: Forgetting Lotus Orb’s dispel
The basic dispel on Lotus Orb’s cast fires on the initial activation, before the Echo Shell is applied. This means Lotus Orb removes silences, slows, attack debuffs, and other basic dispel-able effects from whoever you cast it on. If your carry is silenced and getting focused, Lotus Orb simultaneously removes the silence and puts up the reflection shield. Many players remember one function and forget the other.
Mistake 5: Holding BKB for too long
BKB has a 95-second cooldown. If you pop it at the start of a fight and win, the enemy team knows you are on cooldown and will force the next fight around that window. A BKB that is always available but never used is not protecting you — the threat of it is, but only temporarily. Use it when you need it and trust that your team can handle one fight without your BKB window if necessary.
Mistake 6: Ignoring the BKB duration decay in late game
At 7 seconds of duration, BKB is less than half of a typical late-game teamfight. If you are three uses into your BKB and the game is going past 50 minutes, reassess. Linken’s passive 14-second block or a Refresher Orb to extend other items may provide better value than relying on 7-second Avatar windows.
