Aghanim’s Shard Tier List by Role (2026)
Aghanim’s Shard is a 1,400 gold purchase that permanently upgrades your hero’s ability — but not every Shard is worth buying. Some turn mediocre abilities into game-changers. Others are barely noticeable. This guide ranks every Shard by role, so you know exactly which heroes should buy theirs as a priority and which should skip it entirely.
We cover carries (position 1), mid heroes (position 2), offlane heroes (position 3), soft supports (position 4), and hard supports (position 5) — with breakdowns of why each Shard ranks where it does, what it adds in terms of value per gold, and how it affects your climb through the pub bracket.

What Is Aghanim’s Shard and Why Does It Matter?
Aghanim’s Shard is a 1,400 gold consumable item that grants a hero a new ability or significantly upgrades an existing one. Unlike Aghanim’s Scepter, the Shard does not provide any stats — it is a pure ability upgrade. Once consumed, it cannot be dropped or transferred.
The 1,400 gold cost places it in an interesting spot in the item economy. It is cheaper than most major items, which means it can fit into a build without disrupting your core item timing, but only if the upgrade it provides is strong enough to justify spending gold on utility rather than raw stats. For some heroes, the Shard is a must-buy that fundamentally changes what their kit can do. For others, it is a luxury purchase you pick up when you are ahead and your core items are already complete.
Carry (Position 1) Aghanim’s Shard Tier List
Carries need their core items before spending 1,400 gold on utility. The best carry Shards either extend farming range, add kill threat, or improve survivability in a way that standard items cannot replicate. Shards that just add minor damage or range extensions rank low — carries can get that value from actual stat items.

| Tier | Hero | What the Shard Does | Why It Ranks Here |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Medusa | Adds a second Snake Ward that slows nearby enemies and provides vision | Doubles her zone-control in fights. Pairs perfectly with Mana Shield to sustain through engagements. The slow makes her almost unkillable to enemy carries who need to get close. |
| S | Phantom Assassin | Stifling Dagger now applies a 1.5s ministun and the ability gains two charges | The ministun converts many near-kills into confirmed kills. Two charges means constant pressure in lane and fights. The 1,400g timing aligns with her post-BF power spike. |
| S | Gyrocopter | Flak Cannon now also fires Homing Missile at the current attack target on each proc | Adds a pseudo-disable to his teamfight damage. Essentially free Homing Missile procs during his Flak window — absolutely devastating in 5v5s. |
| A | Juggernaut | Healing Ward now moves toward the lowest HP ally and cannot be targeted by heroes | A huge survivability upgrade. The Ward used to die instantly in fights. Now it actively chases injured allies, making it a reliable heal source rather than bait for enemy clicks. |
| A | Sven | Warcry grants 4 seconds of spell immunity after cast | Solves his biggest weakness. Sven gets kited by disables before he can connect. Spell immunity on Warcry lets him close the gap without getting chain-stunned. Buy after Armlet and before Blink. |
| A | Luna | Eclipse now also hits enemy heroes within 900 AoE of the main target with half the beam count | Transforms Eclipse from a single-target nuke into a teamfight ultimate. Luna was already strong; this makes her fight contribution at level 6 genuinely dangerous even without Aghs Scepter. |
| A | Chaos Knight | Reality Rift now pulls one illusion to your location in addition to the target | More consistent illusion management means more physical damage in burst windows. The pull sets up the illusion triangle without manual positioning. Solid value after Armlet. |
| B | Anti-Mage | Counterspell now reflects targeted spells back at the caster when manually activated | Situationally excellent into spell-heavy lineups. Worth buying when the enemy has Lina, Lion, or Witch Doctor. Skip against physical lineups. |
| B | Terrorblade | Reflection now also creates a Terror illusion of the reflected target that attacks them | Good into single-target lineups. Reflection is already one of the best laning tools in Dota; doubling its threat makes TB’s laning phase even harder to play against. |
| B | Morphling | Waveform now deals 50% of the damage as each element type it passes through | Adds wave-clear to his kit. The extra element damage requires enemy heroes to be in line, which limits reliability. Still a good utility buy in the late game. |
| C | Faceless Void | Time Walk now applies a 60% slow to all enemies in a 350 AoE on landing | Nice but Void already has Chronosphere for teamfight control. The slow helps in laning but 1,400g is better spent on his next stat item. Buy only if snowballing hard. |
| D | Ursa | Fury Swipes stacks now also increase attack speed | Ursa already ramps to unhittable damage on BKB Blink timing. Attack speed on top is redundant — he is already fast enough by the time this would matter. Hard skip. |
Mid (Position 2) Aghanim’s Shard Tier List
Mid heroes are the most Shard-diverse role in the game. Because mid heroes are expected to win their lane and translate that into map pressure, the best mid Shards either improve lane dominance, add a new rotational tool, or convert solo kills into snowballs. Mid players are also the most likely to be ahead at the 15-20 minute window when Shard becomes affordable.
| Tier | Hero | What the Shard Does | Why It Ranks Here |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Storm Spirit | Ball Lightning now creates a remnant at Storm’s starting position that zaps nearby enemies for 60 seconds | Free vision and zone control while he is rotating. The remnant deals damage and slows, making him harder to catch while he is away from lane. The best mobility mid in the game gets even better escape tools. |
| S | Lina | Fiery Soul now grants a stack on kill or assist, plus Dragon Slave fires two projectiles side by side | Doubles her wave-clear speed for farming and pushes. The double Dragon Slave hits twice in lane for insane harass. Stack gain on assists means she accelerates during teamfights, not just on solo kills. Must-buy mid-game. |
| S | Dragon Knight | Dragon Tail now has a 20% chance to instantly kill non-elite creeps it hits | Free last hits in lane and faster tower push. DK is already a great lane bully; the free last hits let him stay richer than his opponent without overcommitting. Pairs with his natural +damage scaling. |
| S | Invoker | Ghost Walk now also summons two Icy Fragments that orbit Invoker and slow attackers | Transforms his escape into a zone-control tool. Invoker is already one of the hardest heroes in the game; the Shard rewards skilled players who can position well in fights. |
| A | Puck | Illusory Orb now leaves a trail of Phase Shift dust that slows enemies by 30% | The slow trail makes Orb more reliable as an escape AND a catch. Puck players already know how to land Orb; making the path itself dangerous punishes enemies who chase. |
| A | Ember Spirit | Sleight of Fist now deals full damage to all heroes in range, not just the primary target | Massive teamfight AoE upgrade. Pre-Shard, Sleight prioritized heroes but dealt reduced damage to non-primary targets. Now every enemy in range takes full damage — terrifying in 5v5 fights. |
| A | Templar Assassin | Meld now also destroys one enemy Refraction stack when it connects | Hard counters mirror TA, Weaver, Abaddon (when shielded). Stripping Refraction stacks is tactically powerful. Buy situationally — this is an A against specific heroes, B otherwise. |
| A | Zeus | Lightning Bolt now also summons a Nimbus at the target location for 20 seconds that strikes nearby enemies | Passive vision ward that also deals damage. Zeus was already excellent at global damage; free vision wards that also electrocute make him a complete map-control presence in the late game. |
| B | Queen of Pain | Shadow Strike now triggers Scream of Pain at the target’s location on hit | Good synergy on paper but QoP already has strong harassment. The extra proc requires Shadow Strike hit registration which can miss in cluttered fights. Solid buy when ahead. |
| B | Tinker | March of the Machines now also leaves patches of fire that damage enemies who stand in them | Adds persistent AoE control to an already area-heavy hero. The fire patches improve his ability to stall fights and siege lanes. Situationally A-tier when the game goes long. |
| C | Sniper | Shrapnel now also grants Sniper +10 attack range while it is active in the targeted area | Marginal improvement. Sniper already has the highest attack range in the game; +10 extra from a zone he has to stand next to is not meaningful. Buy only if you have nothing better. |
| D | Clinkz | Burning Army skeletons now have +50% HP | The base Burning Army skeletons die instantly in any teamfight. Giving them more HP does not change that — they still melt. Clinkz wants damage items, not pet HP buffs. |
Offlane (Position 3) Aghanim’s Shard Tier List
Offlaners benefit most from Shards that improve their initiation range, survivability, or lockdown. A great offlaner Shard turns a 1v2 laning situation into a free harassment lane and a 5v5 into a fight you can control. Position 3 players should consider buying Shard earlier than carries when the upgrade directly enables their playmaking role.
| Tier | Hero | What the Shard Does | Why It Ranks Here |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Axe | Battle Hunger now also applies a 20% slow and grants Axe +10 armor while any target has it active | Completely changes his laning. The slow means Battle Hunger is a soft disable rather than just a damage-over-time. The armor makes Axe tankier against every hero who has it on them simultaneously. Buy at minute 10-12 without hesitation. |
| S | Centaur Warrunner | Stampede now also carries allies who are in the AoE when cast, granting them the bonus damage and applying the stomp to enemies they pass through | One of the most impactful Shards in the game. Carrying allies during Stampede turns a solo initiation tool into a team-fight opener. The stomp on passing enemies punishes enemies who group up. Enormous value per gold for a pos 3 playmaker. |
| S | Tidehunter | Anchor Smash now also knocks back enemies hit by 200 units | Anchor Smash was already one of the best farming tools and fight-sustain moves. Adding a knockback disrupts enemy positioning in fights — separating grouped enemies or interrupting their positioning. |
| A | Dragon Knight | (Same Shard as mid listing) Dragon Tail free last-hits | DK works as an offlaner and the Shard is equally strong here. When offlaning DK, buy Shard at minute 12-15 to dominate lane phase and push towers aggressively. |
| A | Underlord | Pit of Malice now also deals 50 damage per second to enemies standing in the area | Turns a pure disable pit into a damage zone. Enemies are already slowed inside the Pit; adding damage-per-second punishes any hero that tries to fight inside it. |
| A | Wraith King | Mortal Strike now also applies a 25% slow for 2 seconds on crit | The slow on crit makes WK significantly harder to kite. Carries who try to run after he crits now get caught. Pairs perfectly with his ult for a guaranteed multi-kill follow-up. |
| A | Night Stalker | Hunter in the Night now also grants True Strike and 15% status resistance during the night | True Strike is extremely valuable against evasion-stacking heroes like Butterfly Phantom Assassin or Brewmaster illusions. The status resistance stacks with his other resistances for exceptional tankiness at night. |
| B | Mars | Spear of Mars now has two charges with a 12-second replenish time | Two Spears doubles his initiation threat. The first Spear can probe, the second confirms. The 12-second recharge means he can often Spear twice in a single fight at higher cooldown reduction levels. |
| B | Beastmaster | Primal Roar now also summons a temporary Beastmaster unit at the target’s location that attacks them | Free damage source on a target that is already isolated by the roar. Good but not transformative — Beastmaster already wins fights with his ultimate and hawk vision. Buy situationally. |
| C | Bristleback | Hairball now applies Quill Spray and a 30% slow on hit | Bristleback prefers items that let him sustain and dish damage simultaneously. Hairball requires active use in a hero designed for passive resilience. Buy only in specific setups. |
| D | Timbersaw | Whirling Death now also deals 5% of the target’s max HP as bonus damage | Timber is a percentage-health damage hero anyway. The extra 5% max HP sounds appealing but Timber games are won or lost on positioning and cooldown timing — not on Shard damage bonus. |
Soft Support (Position 4) Aghanim’s Shard Tier List
Position 4 supports are the most action-dense role in pub Dota. They gank, they ward, they rotate, they create space. The best pos 4 Shards either add a new tool for kills or improve an ability that is already being used every fight. At 1,400 gold, a pos 4 buying Shard is spending a significant chunk of their budget — it has to be worth it.

| Tier | Hero | What the Shard Does | Why It Ranks Here |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Earthshaker | Fissure now also pushes enemies away from the fissure wall on creation and applies a 1.5s silence | The push and silence added to Fissure makes his split even more punishing. Enemies caught next to the fissure get knocked away and silenced — guaranteeing they cannot respond with spells immediately. One of the most impactful pos 4 Shards in the game. |
| S | Shadow Demon | Disruption now also casts a Shadow Poison on the target before banishing them | Free Shadow Poison stack during Disruption means the target comes back with accumulated slow and damage already applied. Enables kills that were previously slightly out of range. Absolutely essential for a Shadow Demon who wants to snowball kills. |
| S | Bounty Hunter | Track now also grants Bounty Hunter invisibility for 3 seconds after cast | A pos 4 BH who tracks and then vanishes is almost impossible to trade with. This Shard enables aggressive Track placement near enemy supports without the risk of immediate counter-attack. High mobility pos 4 playstyle thrives on this. |
| A | Pudge | Dismember now drains 4% of max HP from the target per second, healing Pudge for that amount | Turns Pudge’s ult into a true kill-or-be-killed ability. The HP drain means even if the hook misses, landing Dismember on a target with 30%+ HP guarantees the kill on most heroes. Works at any point in the game. |
| A | Bloodseeker | Rupture now also applies a 40% slow to ruptured targets who move | Rupture was already a strong slow-down-or-die ability. Adding 40% movement slow to targets that move means they get slowed when they try to run — a punishing loop that makes Rupture nearly impossible to escape without mobility spells. |
| A | Nyx Assassin | Spiked Carapace now reflects 100% of damage taken to all nearby enemies in 400 AoE | AoE reflect is massive for a roamer. In ganks, the reflected damage now hits every hero who attacks Nyx simultaneously — punishing aggressive teams who try to collapse on him. |
| B | Earth Spirit | Rolling Boulder now also damages and slows enemies it rolls past by 30% | Earth Spirit already has one of the highest skill ceilings in Dota. This Shard adds damage to a rotational ability, not to his core combo. Good for experienced players; middling for average pub play. |
| B | Pangolier | Shield Crash now launches a Swashbuckle slash in all directions on cast | More reliable AoE damage on Shield Crash. Pango’s strength is mixing abilities creatively — this Shard rewards knowing your position relative to enemies. Buy when ahead and looking for teamfight value. |
| C | Tusk | Snowball now automatically grows as it rolls even without allies jumping in | The growth without allies is a quality-of-life upgrade but Tusk Shard is not as impactful as having allies actually jump in to amplify damage. Works in a 1v1 gank setup but falls off in coordinated play. |
| D | Clockwerk | Power Cogs now also applies a 30% slow to enemies inside the cog ring | Clockwerk wins fights by trapping enemies with Cogs and dealing burst damage. Adding a slow inside is redundant — enemies trapped in Cogs cannot leave the ring without Hookshot anyway. The gold is better spent on Blade Mail or Pipe. |
Hard Support (Position 5) Aghanim’s Shard Tier List
Hard supports rarely have 1,400 gold to spare, which makes Shard a meaningful sacrifice from warding budget or defensive item purchases. The only reason to buy Shard as a pos 5 is if the upgrade directly enables a save, a game-winning fight, or extends your ability to keep your carry alive. Anything else and the gold is better spent on Force Staff, Glimmer Cape, or ward coverage.
| Tier | Hero | What the Shard Does | Why It Ranks Here |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | Crystal Maiden | Crystal Nova now also roots enemies in its AoE for 1 second after the initial slow expires | The root after the slow is a full 1-second hard lockdown. Crystal Maiden already relies on Nova for lane harassment and setup. The root turns it from a slow ability into a genuine combo starter. Essential for a CM who wants to create kill opportunities early. |
| S | Lion | Mana Drain now also deals 60 magical damage per second to the target being drained | Turns Mana Drain into an aggressive tool rather than a support ability. The 60 damage per second stacks with his other spells for faster kill patterns. As a pos 5 who wants to snowball your carry, this Shard pays for itself in the first gank where Mana Drain contributes to a kill. |
| S | Witch Doctor | Paralyzing Cask now also applies a 3-second poison slow to each target it bounces to | The poison slow is massive. Cask already bounces and stuns; adding a persistent slow means enemies cannot escape after the stun expires. This upgrade is disproportionately powerful in lane and in fights — one of the best pos 5 Shards at any bracket. |
| A | Lich | Frost Shield now also deals 40 damage per second to enemies within its range | Frost Shield was a pure defensive tool — now it has offensive value against enemies who dive your protected ally. The damage-per-second encourages enemies to disengage, effectively turning a defensive cooldown into a zoning ability. |
| A | Disruptor | Kinetic Field now also applies a 10-second silence to all enemies inside the field when it forms | This is an enormous upgrade. Kinetic Field already traps enemies; adding a silence inside means enemies cannot cast spells to escape or counterattack while your team collapses. Works best with Thunder Strike already on a target. |
| A | Shadow Shaman | Shackles now also creates a healing wave every 2 seconds that heals nearby allies for 80 HP | Turns Shackles into a healing window for your team during the channel. Shadow Shaman is already one of the best supports in the game at 6 minutes — making Shackles also heal your carry while locked means more successful trades in early towers. |
| A | Omniknight | Purification now also deals bonus damage equal to 25% of the amount healed | A heal that also nukes. Purification is already Omniknight’s primary tool for laning aggression; adding 25% of the heal as damage to the target means every Purification use is simultaneously a heal AND an attack. Strong pos 5 value throughout the game. |
| B | Jakiro | Ice Path now applies a 60% slow to all enemies in the path even after the root expires | Good quality-of-life upgrade. Jakiro is a passive support who relies on his combo — the lingering slow makes ice path more forgiving if enemies have root-break items. Not transformative but solid value. |
| B | Warlock | Upheaval now also creates two Golems when a Golem dies, each with 30% of the original’s HP | More Golems for siege and fight control. The replacement Golems are small but they require enemy time to kill, which creates space. Buy when ahead and looking to extend sieges. |
| C | Dazzle | Weave now additionally grants +4 armor to allies every 4 seconds it is active | Dazzle already has one of the strongest healing kits. Weave is usually bought late and used situationally — getting bonus armor from it is fine but not a reason to prioritize 1,400 gold over wards and Force Staff. |
| D | Ancient Apparition | Cold Feet now slows enemies by 30% in the 2 seconds before the freeze triggers | AA’s power lies in Ice Blast and Cold Feet’s freeze. The slow before the freeze sounds helpful but AA’s issue is that enemies simply walk out of Cold Feet range before the freeze triggers — the slow does not extend the range, so enemies can still outrun it. |
Value Per Gold: When to Skip Aghanim’s Shard
Not every Shard is worth buying. The 1,400 gold cost needs to be compared against what that gold could buy instead. Here is how to think about value per gold by role and game state.
The 1,400 Gold Alternative Test
Before buying Shard, ask yourself what 1,400 gold buys on this hero. For a carry, 1,400 gold is roughly half a Diffusal Blade, or full components for Phase Boots plus a Helm of Iron Will. For a support, it is a Force Staff (2,200 gold total — the Shard purchase delays it by one item cycle) or a completed Glimmer Cape.
If the Shard provides more game impact than that alternative purchase, buy it. If it is just a minor ability tweak, skip it and finish your real items first.
| Role | Shard Priority Window | Skip If… |
|---|---|---|
| Position 1 (Carry) | After first major damage item + power treads | Your core item sequence is not complete. A Shard at 14 minutes on a carry who needed BF by 15 minutes is a mistake. |
| Position 2 (Mid) | 13-18 minutes when using the gold from kills | You are behind in farm and need stats to fight. Shard does not save a losing mid lane. |
| Position 3 (Offlane) | Blink-timing window, often 14-18 minutes | You do not have Blink Dagger yet. Blink is almost always more important than Shard on offlane initiators. |
| Position 4 (Soft Support) | After Boots of Speed + first utility item (Medallion, Solar Crest, etc.) | You are still unfinished on warding and the map has dark spots everywhere. Vision wins games at this bracket. |
| Position 5 (Hard Support) | Mid-game when ahead, or never if behind | You need Force Staff or Glimmer Cape for saves. Shard cannot save your carry from a missed Force Staff. |
Shards That Are Almost Never Worth Buying (Any Role)
Some Shards are weak regardless of context in the current patch. These include abilities that upgrade already-passive or stat-irrelevant parts of a kit. The worst Shards in the game are ones that add HP to summons (summons die anyway), increase range on heroes with already-excessive range, or add passive damage in a game that is decided by burst.
Before you buy a Shard you have not thought about before, look up whether it upgrades an ability you actually cast every fight. If the ability it upgrades is something you press maybe twice a game, the Shard is almost certainly a waste of gold.
Climbing Impact by Bracket
The value of Aghanim’s Shard changes dramatically depending on what bracket you are in. In lower MMR brackets, Shard purchases are often mistimed or bought on the wrong heroes. In higher brackets, Shard timing is a known part of hero-specific build orders.
Herald and Crusader (0-2,000 MMR)
In Herald and Crusader, most players do not buy Shard at all. This means any player who learns correct Shard timing on even one hero has a systematic advantage. Focus on S-tier Shards only at this bracket — Medusa Shard, Phantom Assassin Shard, Witch Doctor Shard, Crystal Maiden Shard. The mechanical improvement is high, the competition is low, and the 1,400 gold investment is rarely challenged before it pays off.
If you want to climb faster, consider working with a coaching service that can walk through hero-specific Shard timings in real-time review sessions.
Archon and Legend (2,000-4,000 MMR)
This bracket starts to see Shard purchases more consistently on carries and mids. The main gap here is support Shard usage — most pos 4 and pos 5 players at Archon do not buy Shard because they feel cash-strapped from support spending. The ones who do buy it (on heroes like Earthshaker and Shadow Demon) punch significantly above their bracket in teamfights.
Ancient and Divine (4,000-7,000 MMR)
At Ancient and above, Shard timing is baked into standard builds. Players know their Shard window to the minute. The difference at this bracket is adaptation — knowing when to skip a normally-good Shard because the enemy lineup does not require that upgrade. Players who use Dota 2 boosting to reach this bracket sometimes struggle because they have not internalized the Shard timing for the heroes they play — always learn the why behind the build, not just the build itself.
Immortal (7,500+ MMR)
At Immortal, Shard purchases are sometimes delayed or skipped entirely in favor of game-state-specific items. The Shard meta at Immortal shifts with every major patch. In the current 7.38 meta, supports are buying Shard earlier than usual on several heroes because the global gold economy is higher — supports are richer from bounty rune stacking changes. Position 2 Shard timing has also shifted earlier because mid-game tempo fights have become more decisive.
| Bracket | Average Shard Purchase Timing | Most Common Mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Herald/Crusader | 20-25 min (often never) | Not buying Shard at all on S-tier heroes |
| Archon/Legend | 16-22 min | Buying Shard before Blink Dagger on initiators |
| Ancient/Divine | 14-18 min | Buying Shard on weak heroes when the meta favors a specific build |
| Immortal | 12-16 min | Rigid Shard timing that does not adapt to game state |
If you are stuck in a bracket and want to understand the exact item timings that separate your level from the next, a Dota 2 coaching session with an Immortal player is the fastest way to identify where your builds diverge from optimal. Item timing is one of the most common coaching findings at every bracket below Ancient.
