Dark Carnival 2026: Start Date, Schedule, and End Date

The Dark Carnival is the biggest Dota 2 in-game event of 2026. It launched on June 22, 2026 and has run across three chapters, each adding new story content, tickets, and Candyworks items. Here is everything confirmed about the schedule.

Dark Carnival Chapter Schedule

Chapter Launch Date Key Content
Chapter 1 — Midnight Run (Act 1) June 22, 2026 Legion Commander & Hoodwink story, Ticket system, Candyworks, Seeing Stones, 5 Automaton Personas
Mid-Event Patch (Scrap Tickets) July 1, 2026 Scrap ticket earning for Regular/Turbo games (2 per win, 1 per Turbo), bug fixes
Chapter 2 — Midnight Run (Act 2) ~July 11, 2026 Act 2 story continuation, ticket gifting unlocked, new Candyworks items
Chapter 3 — Midnight Run (Final) ~July 24, 2026 Conclusion of Midnight Run story, final node unlocks, full reward completion

When Does Dark Carnival End?

As of September 2026, Valve has not published an official end date for the Dark Carnival. This is consistent with how Valve handled Crownfall in 2024 — that event ran for approximately five months with no official countdown at launch, and Valve announced the end date roughly two weeks before closure.

Based on the TI 2026 timeline (Grand Finals were August 13-23 in Shanghai) and the Crownfall precedent, the community estimate is that Dark Carnival will close sometime in late September 2026. All three chapters are complete and no new content has been announced.

For the definitive up-to-date tracking on the Dark Carnival end date — including what happens to your unused tickets and rewards when the event closes — see our dedicated page: Dota 2 Dark Carnival End Date and Full Schedule.

Dark Carnival Ticket and Rewards Summary

The Dark Carnival uses a ticket-based economy. Tickets are earned by playing matches — 2 per regular game win, 1 per Turbo win — and spent in the Candyworks shop. The Seeing Stones mechanic adds additional random rewards. Three types of tickets exist: Standard Tickets, Scrap Tickets (introduced July 1), and bonus tickets from event challenges.

All Automaton Personas and Candyworks items are exclusive to the Dark Carnival period. Once the event ends, these items are no longer earnable. Players who have not completed their reward track should prioritize doing so before the closing date.

If you want to maximize your MMR during the event period — especially if your rank is holding you back from enjoying the event content fully — our MMR Boosting Guide explains how professional boosting works and what to expect.

What Comes After Dark Carnival?

Based on Valve’s event history, the period following a major seasonal event like Dark Carnival typically includes a short gap (2-4 weeks), followed by either a new mini-event, a major patch (7.42 is expected), or a seasonal event like Diretide. The exact sequence for 2026 has not been confirmed. Watch for Valve announcements on Steam and in the Dota 2 client.

Battle Cup Seasons 2026-27

Battle Cup is Dota 2’s recurring in-game tournament format. Unlike seasonal events that run for weeks, Battle Cup is a weekly competition that operates in seasons. Each season spans approximately 1-2 months, with cups running every weekend.

How Battle Cup Works

Battle Cup is available to players who have purchased a Battle Cup ticket (or owned a Battle Pass that included access). Teams of 5 compete in a single-elimination bracket on weekends. Tier is determined by your highest medal on the team, ranging from Tier 1 (Herald-Crusader) to Tier 8 (Immortal). Winners receive cosmetic rewards — chests, sets, and trophies — with higher tiers yielding rarer drops.

Battle Cup MMR is separate from ranked MMR. Winning a Battle Cup contributes to a special Battle Cup rating visible on your profile. Games played in Battle Cup do not affect your ranked MMR directly.

Battle Cup Tier Medal Range Reward Quality
Tier 1 Herald & Crusader Basic cosmetic chest
Tier 2 Archon Improved chest + trophy
Tier 3 Legend Enhanced chest + trophy
Tier 4 Ancient Rare chest + trophy
Tier 5 Divine High-quality chest + trophy
Tier 6 Immortal (lower) Premium chest + trophy
Tier 7-8 High Immortal / Leaderboard Exclusive chest + trophy

Battle Cup Season Schedule 2026

The August-September 2026 Battle Cup season wrapped up with the conclusion of TI 2026. The next season — October 2026 — is expected to begin in early October, but Valve has not confirmed specific dates as of this update.

For the most current Battle Cup dates and weekend schedules, see our Battle Cup Season Guide: August-September 2026.

If your medal is not where you want it before the October Battle Cup season, upgrading your rank beforehand puts you into a better tier for rewards. Our Dota 2 MMR Boosting Services can help you hit the right bracket before the season opens.

Diretide 2026: Will It Come Back?

Diretide is Dota 2’s Halloween-themed seasonal event. The event originally ran from 2012 to 2013, was discontinued, brought back for one day in 2014 (famously causing massive community uproar when it didn’t appear), and returned properly in 2022 after a long absence. In 2022 and 2023, Diretide featured a dedicated game mode where two teams competed to steal candy and feed it to Roshan.

Diretide 2026 — Confirmed or Not?

As of September 17, 2026, Valve has not confirmed Diretide 2026. No Steam announcement, no in-client teaser, and no datamined assets have been linked to a 2026 Diretide event. This does not mean it will not happen — Valve’s track record shows they often announce seasonal events with only 1-2 weeks of notice.

Estimated dates: If Diretide follows the 2022-2023 pattern, expect it to launch in mid-to-late October 2026 and run through mid-November 2026. The Halloween timing (around October 31) is the clearest driver. This is a TBD estimate, not a confirmed date.

Diretide History: Previous Event Dates

Year Start Date End Date Format
2012 October 2012 November 2012 Original candy defense mode
2013 October 2013 November 2013 Expanded candy defense
2022 October 10, 2022 November 10, 2022 Revamped PvP candy-feed Roshan mode
2023 October 2023 November 2023 Updated mode + new cosmetics
2024 Did not run (Crownfall period) — No Diretide in 2024
2025 Data not confirmed Data not confirmed Update this page when confirmed
2026 TBD — est. mid-October 2026 TBD — est. mid-November 2026 TBD

Note on 2024: The Crownfall event ran from April through August/September 2024, taking up most of the calendar year. Valve did not run a separate Diretide during that period. If a similar pattern holds for 2026 (Dark Carnival running into September), a Diretide event in October-November would be possible but is not guaranteed.

Frostivus 2026: The Winter Event

Frostivus is Dota 2’s annual winter holiday event. It has appeared in various forms since 2012, usually running from mid-December through early January. In some years Valve has replaced Frostivus with other events (Diretide ran in December 2012 instead, and the winter 2014 event was the original Frostivus return). In recent years Frostivus has returned as a consistent holiday event with cosmetic rewards and sometimes a dedicated event game mode.

Frostivus 2026 — Status and Estimated Dates

As of September 2026, Valve has not announced Frostivus 2026. Based on historical patterns, the expected window is:

  • Start date: TBD — estimated mid-December 2026 (around December 15-20)
  • End date: TBD — estimated early January 2027 (around January 7-10)
  • Duration: Typically 3-4 weeks

Valve’s announcement pattern for winter events typically gives 1-2 weeks of notice. Watch the Dota 2 Steam news page for the official announcement. This page will be updated immediately when dates are confirmed.

Battle Pass 2026: Is Valve Bringing It Back?

The Dota 2 Battle Pass was the flagship annual cosmetic offering from Valve for many years, typically releasing around the International and running for several months. The last traditional Battle Pass was the TI10 Battle Pass in 2021. Since then, Valve has moved to a different approach, using Crownfall (2024) and Dark Carnival (2026) as the major cosmetic event products instead.

Battle Pass 2026 — Status

As of September 2026, Valve has not announced a Battle Pass 2026. The community has been speculating about a possible return, with datamined hints suggesting Valve is considering some form of Battle Pass-style product. However, no official announcement has been made.

The pattern since 2022: Valve replaced the annual Battle Pass with event-specific cosmetic systems (Crownfall tokens, Dark Carnival tickets). A return to the traditional Battle Pass format is possible but not confirmed.

Estimated scenario if announced: A Battle Pass 2026 would most likely release in October-November 2026 or early 2027, if it happens at all. Given that Valve typically prices Battle Passes at $9.99 / $29.99 / $44.99 for different tier bundles (historical pricing — actual 2026 pricing TBD if announced), the cost calculus is relevant for players deciding whether to wait.

This page will be updated immediately when and if Valve announces a 2026 Battle Pass with confirmed dates and pricing.

Ranked Season Resets 2026-27

Ranked season resets in Dota 2 are not tied to a fixed calendar. Valve resets medals and triggers a recalibration period at irregular intervals — typically every 6 months, though the timing varies. A ranked reset requires players to play a set number of calibration matches before their new medal is revealed.

What Happens During a Ranked Reset

When a ranked season resets, your current medal is hidden and replaced with a “Calibrating” badge. You must play through calibration matches before receiving your new rank. Your underlying MMR does not reset — calibration primarily affects which medal tier you are displayed at. Players who boost their MMR before a reset use it as an opportunity to calibrate into a higher medal bracket.

Reset Feature Details
Calibration matches needed Typically 10 matches
MMR after reset Not erased — calibration adjusts badge display
Behavior Score impact Behavior Score carries over; low score = harder queue
Best time to boost MMR Before a reset, to calibrate at a higher bracket
Next reset (2026-27) TBD — estimated October/November 2026

The October/November 2026 estimate is based on the pattern from previous resets and is not confirmed by Valve. Check the Dota 2 ranked history page for the full timeline of all past resets: Dota 2 Ranked Season History: Every Reset Since 2017.

If a reset is coming up and you want to calibrate into a better bracket, understanding how Dota 2 boosting safety works before the reset is worth reading — including what Valve can and cannot detect.

How to Stay Updated on Dota 2 Events

Valve announces events with very short notice — sometimes just 24-48 hours before launch, sometimes 1-2 weeks in advance. Here is the fastest way to catch announcements:

  • Steam News for Dota 2: store.steampowered.com/news/app/570 — every official Valve announcement posts here first.
  • The Dota 2 client: A news banner appears on the main menu when an event is live or imminent. Check the “Seasonal” tab if one appears.
  • Dota 2 subreddit (r/DotA2): Community members post announcements within minutes. Also useful for clarifying vague patch notes.
  • This page: Bookmark it. Every confirmed event date update goes into the master table above within 24 hours of the Valve announcement.
Tip: When Valve adds a visible event countdown timer to the Dota 2 client (this appeared with Crownfall before closure), that is your two-week warning. At that point, burn any remaining tickets or complete reward tracks — do not wait until the last day.

Official Dota 2 Event Sources (Bookmark These)

The only sources you can trust for exact event dates are:

  1. Official Valve Steam announcements (dota2.com/news or Steam news for app 570)
  2. The in-game Dota 2 client timer/banner
  3. The Dota 2 official social accounts (Twitter/X @DOTA2, Dota 2 Facebook page)

Reddit posts, Discord rumors, and third-party sites (including this one) should be treated as estimates until Valve confirms. This page clearly labels everything that is not yet official as “TBD — estimated.”

Does Your MMR Hold You Back From Events?

Event rewards in Dota 2 are almost entirely cosmetic — they do not depend on your MMR. However, some players find that a low MMR makes the game less enjoyable and affects how much they can play. If toxic matches or uncoordinated teammates are reducing how much you can grind an event, improving your bracket changes the experience significantly.

TeamSmurf provides MMR boosting and coaching services for Dota 2 players who want to climb. Our boosters are all high-Immortal and Leaderboard players. If you have ever considered it, check Is Dota 2 Boosting Safe? first — it explains what the real risks are and how TeamSmurf operates.

Maximize Your MMR Before the Next Event

Every major event is also a window to grow. A better MMR means better teammates and more enjoyable games. TeamSmurf’s Immortal boosters operate 24/7 so you can hit your target rank before any event closes.

The full table with all dates is at the top of this page and is updated when Valve confirms anything.
QWhen does Frostivus 2026 start?
Frostivus 2026 has not been announced as of September 2026. Based on historical patterns, Frostivus typically starts in mid-December and runs through early January. The estimated start is mid-December 2026. Valve usually gives 1-2 weeks of notice before the event launches. This page will be updated the moment Valve makes an official announcement.
QIs there a Diretide 2026?
As of September 2026, Valve has not confirmed Diretide 2026. Diretide is Dota 2’s Halloween event, historically running in October-November. It returned in 2022 and 2023 after a long absence, but did not run in 2024 during the Crownfall period. The estimate is mid-October through mid-November 2026 if Valve runs it, but no official announcement has been made.
QWhen does Dark Carnival end?
Dark Carnival has no official confirmed end date as of September 17, 2026. The community estimate based on TI 2026 timing and Crownfall precedent is late September 2026. Valve will add a visible countdown timer to the client approximately two weeks before closure — that is your warning to burn remaining tickets. For the full breakdown, see our Dark Carnival End Date page linked in the related posts below.
QWhen is the next Dota 2 ranked season reset?
Valve has not announced a specific date for the next ranked season reset. Based on historical patterns (approximately every 6 months), the next reset is estimated for October or November 2026. When it happens, you will play calibration matches to set your new medal display. Your underlying MMR carries over — the reset affects your badge tier, not the raw number behind it.
QWhat happens to Dark Carnival tickets when the event ends?
When the Dark Carnival event ends, any unspent Candyworks tickets will likely expire and become unusable — this is consistent with how Crownfall tokens worked at the Crownfall closure. Valve has not explicitly published the ticket expiry policy for Dark Carnival, but the pattern strongly suggests unused tickets will not carry over to future events. Spend remaining tickets before the event closes. For a full breakdown, see the Dark Carnival End Date page.
QIs there a Dota 2 Battle Pass in 2026?
As of September 2026, Valve has not announced a 2026 Battle Pass. The last traditional Battle Pass was TI10 in 2021. Since then, Valve has used event-specific cosmetic systems (Crownfall in 2024, Dark Carnival in 2026). There is community speculation about a Battle Pass return, but nothing has been confirmed. This page will be updated immediately if Valve makes an announcement.
