How to Counter Phantom Assassin: Evasion Math Explained
Phantom Assassin is one of Dota 2’s most feared late-game carries in patch 7.41d. A 50.8% win rate at a 14.1% pick rate tells part of the story. The other part is felt every time you throw four right-clicks at her and watch three of them dissolve into the air.
She stacks evasion through her passive Immaterial, crits for up to 450% damage through Coup de Grace, and uses Blur to vanish entirely from the enemy team’s vision. Fighting her without the right items is not strategy — it is hope management.
This guide covers everything you need to stop her. We start with the raw evasion math that most players never study, then move to the items and heroes that make the math irrelevant. Whether you are drafting against PA in ranked or learning to itemize correctly in pubs, this breakdown applies patch 7.41d data throughout. All hero win-rate figures are community-reported data from dota2counters.com and are not official Valve statistics.
In This Guide
PA’s Kit in Patch 7.41d
Before addressing counters, you need to know what makes Phantom Assassin dangerous right now. Her kit has changed in notable ways from earlier patches, particularly around the evasion mechanic. Many guides still describe Blur as a passive evasion ability. That has not been the case since the 7.41 rework, and playing around the old version of PA is one of the most common itemization mistakes in pub games.
Blur (Active Ability)
Blur is now an active ability. PA activates it to disjoint incoming projectiles, gain 9.5% movement speed, and turn invisible until she moves within 500 range of a hero or tower. Duration is 30 seconds with a 0.8-second vanish buffer after activation. This is an escape and initiation tool — it is not where her evasion comes from. Players who still think “Blur = passive miss chance” are building their counter-item logic on an outdated foundation.
Stifling Dagger (Q)
PA throws a dagger dealing 65-80 base physical damage plus 30-75% of her attack damage depending on level. It applies a 50% movement slow for up to 3 seconds and carries all on-hit item effects including crit proc chances. Cast range scales from 700 to 1,150 at max level. Stifling Dagger is both a farming tool for last-hitting ranged creeps and a setup ability that slows targets before Phantom Strike follow-up. The level 25 talent grants Triple Strike Stifling Dagger, sending three daggers simultaneously.
Phantom Strike (W)
Teleport to any unit with a 0.1-second cast time. When PA blinks to an enemy, she gains 80-200 bonus attack speed for 3 seconds. Cast range is 650-950 at max level. Phantom Strike pierces debuff immunity, meaning BKB does not stop her from teleporting onto your carry. This is how she closes range on your backline instantly. Your disable must land before this blink executes or the result is usually a dead support.
Immaterial (Passive, Breakable)
This is PA’s evasion passive and the central mechanic of this guide. Immaterial gives 25%/35%/45%/55% evasion at levels 1-4. It is a Breakable passive, meaning Silver Edge and other Break effects disable it completely. The Level 15 talent adds +20% Immaterial evasion, stacking via diminishing returns with other sources. We break down the full probability math in the next section.
Coup de Grace (Passive, Breakable)
PA has a 17% chance per attack to gain the Deadly Focus buff. Stifling Dagger has a 34% chance to apply it. When Deadly Focus is consumed on an attack, that attack becomes a guaranteed critical strike dealing 200%/325%/450% damage at levels 1-3. Coup de Grace is also Breakable — Silver Edge disables it alongside Immaterial simultaneously. Deadly Focus lasts 6-10 seconds before expiring. At max level, a single crit from a 6-slotted PA against a low-armor target can reach 4,000-5,000 raw damage before any amplification.
Fan of Knives (Aghanim’s Scepter Ability)
Aghanim’s Scepter grants PA an active AoE ability that releases blades dealing 30% of each nearby enemy’s max health as physical damage in a 550 radius, applying 4 seconds of Break on all hit heroes. A Scepter PA can therefore Break enemy heroes who have their own passive evasion or other Breakable abilities. If your team relies on Butterfly evasion or hero passives for defense, be aware of this interaction when PA has Scepter. The damage itself is percentage-based and cannot be evaded.
The Evasion Math: How Immaterial Works
This is the section most guides skip. Understanding how Immaterial functions in actual gameplay — not just what the tooltip says — separates players who build MKB at the right time from those who wonder why their physical damage accomplished nothing all game.
Pseudo-Random Distribution: Not True RNG
Evasion in Dota 2 does not roll independent randomness on every attack. It uses Pseudo-Random Distribution, abbreviated PRD. PRD tracks consecutive non-proc attacks. After each attack that lands (evasion fails to trigger), the per-attack probability for the next miss increases. After an evasion proc (a miss occurs), the counter resets to a low initial value.
The practical result: PA will never absorb unlimited consecutive hits without a miss. But right after a miss proc, she is temporarily more vulnerable for the next 1-2 attacks. PRD smooths out what would otherwise be streaky true-random variance into a predictable pattern across many attacks. From a gameplay perspective, PA will produce bursts of misses in short windows rather than evenly distributed misses across every attack.
What PRD Means at Each Immaterial Level
For 55% nominal evasion at Immaterial level 4, the initial per-attack miss chance is approximately 19-20%. That probability rises by roughly 20 percentage points for each consecutive hit PA absorbs without a miss proc. After approximately 5-6 consecutive hits without a miss, the evasion proc becomes near-certain. Against a fast-attacking carry who outputs 2-3 attacks per second, PA reaches the guaranteed-miss threshold in under 3 seconds — producing consistent miss bursts in short fight windows.
At Immaterial level 1 (25% nominal evasion), the initial per-attack chance is around 9-10%. PA can absorb 10 or more consecutive hits before a guaranteed miss occurs. Early game evasion is meaningful but not overwhelming. By level 13 when Immaterial reaches max rank, the math shifts dramatically in her favor.
Diminishing Returns When Stacking Evasion
Multiple evasion sources do not add together linearly. Dota 2 uses a multiplicative formula to calculate combined miss chance from multiple sources:
Combined miss chance = 1 – (1 – E1) x (1 – E2) x (1 – E3)
What this formula produces in real numbers:
| Evasion Sources Active | Combined Miss Chance | Hits Landing Per 10 Attacks |
|---|---|---|
| Immaterial level 4 only (55%) | 55% | ~4.5 |
| Immaterial + Level 15 Talent (+20%) | 64% | ~3.6 |
| Immaterial + Talent + Butterfly (35%) | 76.6% | ~2.3 |
| MKB on attacker (True Strike) | 0% | 10 of 10 |
| Silver Edge Break active (Immaterial disabled) | 0% | 10 of 10 |
The table demonstrates two critical points. First, stacking additional evasion items hits severe diminishing returns quickly — adding a 35% Butterfly to a 64% combined evasion produces only 76.6%, not 99%. Second and more importantly, the gap between “PA with full evasion stacking” and “PA against an MKB carrier” is not a reduction in miss chance. It is a complete reset to zero. MKB does not lower PA’s miss rate. It removes the check entirely on every attack, every time.
Why Evasion Feels Worse Than the Numbers Suggest
Three compounding factors make the 55% figure feel even more punishing in practice. First, Coup de Grace crits only trigger on attacks that actually connect — every hit that lands through PA’s evasion is a potential 450% damage critical strike. The number of landing hits matters more than the number of attacks thrown. Second, Phantom Strike grants 200 bonus attack speed for 3 seconds, meaning PA fires attacks at a significantly faster rate than almost any other carry. More attacks per second means she reaches the PRD guaranteed-miss threshold faster, producing denser miss bursts during Phantom Strike windows. Third, PA’s standard build includes Desolator, which reduces armor and amplifies the physical damage of every hit that connects.
In practice: a 6-slotted PA against a support with 5 effective armor and no True Strike items sees roughly 45% of her attacks land. Those 45% include crit proc chances. The math on expected damage per second is far higher than it appears from looking at the evasion percentage alone.
Item Counters: What to Buy and Why
| Item | Counter Mechanism | Best On |
|---|---|---|
| Monkey King Bar | True Strike on every attack — 100% hit rate regardless of any evasion source | Any physical damage carry |
| Silver Edge | Break on hit disables Immaterial AND Coup de Grace simultaneously for 4 seconds | Strength carries, physical initiators |
| Bloodthorn | 5-second silence plus True Strike during debuff duration, plus damage amplification | Ranged agility or intelligence heroes |
| Maelstrom | Lightning proc is not an attack and bypasses miss checks entirely | Agility carries building toward MKB |
| Blade Mail | Reflects 100% of incoming crit damage back at PA during active window | Tanky offlane and support heroes |

Monkey King Bar: The Non-Optional Response
If Phantom Assassin is in the enemy draft, MKB should be in your item consideration before the loading screen ends. MKB grants True Strike on every attack from the carrier, meaning 100% hit rate against any combination of evasion from any source. It completely negates Immaterial, Butterfly, and any other miss-chance mechanic PA could stack. MKB also carries a 30% chance per attack to deal 160 bonus magic damage with a mini-stun. That proc is also not a standard attack and bypasses evasion miss checks, dealing chip damage even on attacks that would have missed without MKB.
MKB builds from Maelstrom plus Javelin plus a recipe. Maelstrom provides solid early-game farming speed and its lightning proc bypasses evasion before you can afford the full item. For most agility and universal carries, MKB fits cleanly into standard item progressions. Delay it at your own risk — every fight before True Strike is a fight where 55-64% of your attacks do nothing.
Silver Edge: The Dual Shutdown
Silver Edge applies Break on attack. Break disables passive abilities for 4 seconds. On PA, a single Silver Edge hit disables two Breakable passives simultaneously: Immaterial (evasion drops to 0%) and Coup de Grace (crit chance drops to 0%). A Broken PA is a 310-movement-speed melee hero with mediocre right-click damage. Her only defensive option during the Break window is activating Blur (the active ability) to escape, which costs mana and is on a 45-second cooldown.
Silver Edge requires execution. You need to connect the initial attack to apply Break, then follow up within the 4-second window. Heroes who build into Shadow Blade for mobility or strength-based physical damage carries find Silver Edge natural. The item also grants 30% critical strike as an item property — this is not a Breakable passive and continues to function normally.
Bloodthorn: Ranged Heroes’ Best Answer
Bloodthorn applies a 5-second silence that prevents PA from activating Blur to escape, while also granting True Strike against the silenced target for the duration. The item further amplifies all critical damage taken and causes a percentage of attacks to deal bonus damage. Landing Bloodthorn on PA before she Phantom Strikes means she cannot escape, cannot evade, and takes amplified damage from your entire team for 5 seconds — an enormous combat window at any stage of the game.
Drow Ranger and Windranger purchase Bloodthorn or MKB as standard core items, explaining much of why those heroes perform well against PA. Windranger in particular reverses the normal Stifling Dagger dynamic: Windrun provides personal evasion that causes PA’s dagger to miss, and Windranger buys True Strike items that pierce everything PA stacks defensively.
Maelstrom: The Midgame Bridge
Maelstrom’s lightning chain proc is not classified as an attack in Dota 2’s damage system. It does not go through miss checks and will deal damage regardless of PA’s evasion. The proc deals 150 damage to a chain of nearby enemies and is an effective damage source before you can afford MKB. Maelstrom also accelerates farming speed through chain procs on creep waves. Build Maelstrom first, then convert to MKB with the Javelin component when you have the gold. Do not hold Maelstrom too long — upgrading to MKB is a priority once PA has Desolator.
Blade Mail: Punish the Crits
Blade Mail reflects 100% of incoming damage back at the attacker for 4.5 seconds after activation. If PA lands a 2,500-damage Coup de Grace crit on a Blade Mail user, PA takes 2,500 damage reflected. A single large crit during a Blade Mail window can kill PA faster than any coordinated burst combo. The execution requirement is activation timing — Blade Mail must be active before PA’s Phantom Strike lands. Tanky offlane heroes and strength carries who can anticipate PA’s engage path are the best Blade Mail candidates. Axe building Blade Mail and activating it during Berserker’s Call is the gold standard for this interaction.
Hero Counters and Win Rate Data
The following win rates are community-reported data from dota2counters.com based on match aggregation across large sample sizes. These are not official Valve statistics. Figures reflect PA’s win rate in each matchup — lower means that hero counters PA more effectively. Sample sizes are included for context.

Tier 1 Hard Counters
Axe — PA Win Rate 40.17% Across 190,212 Games
Axe is the single strongest mechanical counter to PA according to community data (dota2counters.com). Berserker’s Call forces PA to attack Axe for 2.4 seconds. During Call, PA cannot Phantom Strike away, cannot use Blur, and wastes Coup de Grace crit procs on a hero specifically built to absorb physical damage. Counter Helix triggers on every attack Axe receives and deals pure AoE physical damage — it is not an attack and not a miss check, it applies when PA attacks, regardless of evasion procs on her side. Blade Mail activated during Berserker’s Call reflects any Coup de Grace crit back at PA at full value. Axe’s health and armor scaling make him a physical wall that PA’s kit cannot efficiently deal with.
Centaur Warrunner — PA Win Rate 41.51% Across 87,827 Games
Centaur tanks PA’s crit output through high health and armor. Stampede deals magic damage — not subject to miss checks or attack damage amplification from Desolator. Hoof Stomp provides a reliable area stun. Centaur’s Return passive deals damage whenever he is attacked, applying per-attack regardless of whether PA’s swing proc’d evasion or not — every attack PA makes on Centaur triggers Return damage. Centaur naturally builds Blade Mail and Heart of Tarrasque, creating a hero who PA cannot burst down before the team collapses on her Phantom Strike position.
Dragon Knight — PA Win Rate 41.67% Across 135,939 Games
Dragon Knight has one of the highest natural armor values in the game through Dragon Blood passive. High armor dramatically reduces effective crit damage — a 450% crit against 30 effective armor deals far less burst than the same crit against a 5-armor support. Elder Dragon Form breath attacks deal magical damage that bypasses miss checks entirely. Dragon Knight builds Silver Edge or Blade Mail naturally and his Dragon Tail stun intercepts PA’s Phantom Strike if timed correctly. If Dragon Knight lands Dragon Tail on PA as she blinks in, she is disabled in melee range and the team collapses.
Tier 2 Strong Counters
Bane — PA Win Rate 44.41% Across 35,532 Games
Fiend’s Grip channels for up to 5 seconds, completely locking PA down. During Fiend’s Grip, PA cannot Phantom Strike, cannot Blur, cannot Stifling Dagger. Nightmare prevents PA from acting entirely when applied. Enfeeble reduces PA’s attack damage and debuff resistance significantly. Bane works best as a position 5 when your physical damage carry has MKB and can maximize the lockdown window. Bane’s mana efficiency and short cooldowns allow him to create multiple disable windows per team fight, each of which represents a period where PA deals zero damage.
Crystal Maiden — PA Win Rate 45.24% Across 163,743 Games
Frostbite roots PA for 3 seconds at max level, preventing Phantom Strike during the duration. PA must blink to engage — a rooted PA cannot reposition. Freezing Field deals sustained magical AoE damage during Crystal Maiden’s ultimate, and magical damage cannot be evaded. Crystal Maiden’s mana regeneration aura ensures your MKB carrier can sustain resources through extended fights. CM is most effective when your team has multiple sources of crowd control and can chain her root into other disables.
Dazzle — PA Win Rate 46.09% Across 104,891 Games
Weave reduces PA’s armor over the duration of a team fight, stacking to negative values and amplifying all physical damage that connects through True Strike. Combined with MKB on your carry, Weaved PA takes enormous amplified damage per hit. Shallow Grave prevents PA from killing a target during its duration — if she Phantom Strikes onto a Shallow Graved ally, she cannot secure the kill even with a 2,500-damage crit, buying time for the team to peel. Dazzle must position safely since PA always prioritizes squishy support targets. If Dazzle dies before casting, the counter value is lost.
Situational Counters
Windranger
Windranger builds Maelstrom into MKB or Bloodthorn as standard core items and naturally pierces PA’s evasion on every attack. Her own Windrun provides personal evasion that causes Stifling Dagger to miss, reversing the normal dynamic. Focus Fire delivers rapid attack bursts that all connect through MKB True Strike. Windranger needs no team support to make the counter felt — her item build alone neutralizes PA’s evasion, and PA cannot slow Windranger with Stifling Dagger while Windrun is active.
Silencer
Global Silence during team fights prevents PA from activating Blur for the entire silence duration, removing her escape option entirely. Arcane Curse stacks damage on every ability use — PA commonly activates Blur, Stifling Dagger, and Phantom Strike in close succession at the start of each engagement, all triggering Arcane Curse stacks simultaneously. Silencer builds Bloodthorn naturally, which silences an individual target and applies True Strike for 5 seconds.
Slardar
Corrosive Haze tracks PA through Blur invisibility on the minimap and reduces her armor substantially, amplifying every attack that connects through True Strike. With MKB on your carry and Corrosive Haze applied, physical damage output against PA scales far above normal. Bash of the Deep applies per-attack — with MKB providing True Strike, every Slardar attack has a chance to proc a 2-second stun, further limiting PA’s ability to use Phantom Strike offensively.
Lane Phase: Exploit Her Early Weakness
Phantom Assassin is deliberately designed to be weak in the laning phase. She is melee, has 15 base intelligence with slow mana recovery, and her damage output early depends heavily on Coup de Grace RNG over a small number of attacks per fight. A PA who loses lane loses 5-8 minutes of farm timing, which delays Desolator completion significantly — often the difference between PA being a threat at 20 minutes versus 26 minutes.
Exploit this window aggressively. At Immaterial level 1, PA has only 25% nominal evasion with PRD initial chance around 9-10%. Early trades are favorable for ranged heroes. Throw harass freely. If you are melee, call for support rotations or lane swaps to create kill opportunities — a level 2-4 PA without Phase Boots has no meaningful fight-back against coordinated stuns.
Ward her ancient camp and jungle entrances. PA almost always farms neutral camps when lane pressure becomes too high, building toward Phase Boots and Battle Fury in the jungle. Cutting her jungle access by 10 minutes delays her by 4-6 real minutes of farm. A PA who reaches Battle Fury at minute 18 instead of minute 14 is not present in fights that occur before that point. If you are working on climbing MMR this season, effective early pressure against PA is one of the highest-leverage laning decisions in your games against her.
Mid Game: Hit Her Before She Hits Full Build
PA’s power curve has predictable item spikes. Understanding each spike tells you when to force fights and when to avoid direct conflict with her.
Phase Boots (8-12 minutes): PA gains mobility and armor. Not dangerous yet but can now chase. Avoid extended duels. Play around the map instead of fighting her directly.
Battle Fury (14-18 minutes): PA is in farming mode. She clears camps and waves rapidly. This is your window — force team fights while she has only a farming item. She participates but cannot instantly kill anyone. Pressure high-ground or take Roshan during this phase rather than waiting for her to reach the next spike.
Desolator (20-24 minutes): This is the spike you must respect. Desolator amplifies all physical damage that connects by reducing armor significantly. If you do not have MKB by this point you will begin losing fights directly. Do not engage PA without True Strike after Desolator completes.
Black King Bar (25-30 minutes): BKB blocks most crowd control. Plan your disable rotations around BKB expiration — fight after she uses BKB rather than throwing lockdown into spell immunity. Remember that Phantom Strike pierces debuff immunity, so she can blink in even through her own BKB-active state. Hex (Scythe of Vyse) pierces spell immunity in most cases and remains the most reliable catch tool through BKB.
If your team falls behind and PA reaches Desolator plus BKB before MKB is purchased, identify which hero on your team can buy Silver Edge most efficiently. A single Silver Edge Break window during a fight — disabling both Immaterial and Coup de Grace — can swing an otherwise losing team fight. Players who find these timing decisions difficult to execute consistently find that coaching on replay review accelerates improvement dramatically. Our MMR coaching staff specifically works on fight-timing decisions at every rank.
Team Fight Execution: Three Windows to Stop Her
PA’s team fight pattern is predictable once you have played against her enough. She activates Blur to approach from stealth or from outside vision, identifies an isolated squishy target, uses Phantom Strike to blink onto them, and immediately fires Stifling Dagger plus rapid right-clicks at +200 attack speed. The full sequence from stealth entry to first attack takes under 2 seconds. Your team must interrupt it at one of three points.
Window 1 — Before She Blinks: Stun or hex PA before Phantom Strike executes. The blink has a 0.1-second cast time — extremely fast but not zero. Positioning your disable heroes so they face toward where PA will appear (near your carry) is more reliable than reacting after the blink lands. Lion’s Hex, Bane’s Nightmare, and instant-cast crowd control can cancel the Phantom Strike animation. A cancelled Phantom Strike wastes her entire attack speed window.
Window 2 — While She Is Invisible: Detect her through active Blur. Sentry Wards and the Gem of True Sight reveal PA during Blur invisibility. A revealed PA must initiate from a visible position, giving your team reaction time instead of responding to an invisible blink. Sentry Ward coverage around your carry’s position is more efficient than full map coverage — PA’s target selection is predictable.
Window 3 — After She Lands: If PA Phantom Strikes onto your hero and your MKB carrier responds immediately, you still win the exchange. True Strike attacks deal full damage, Blade Mail reflects her first crit, and Silver Edge Break applied within the first hit disables both Immaterial and Coup de Grace for 4 seconds. PA post-Phantom Strike has committed to a position in your team’s range and cannot escape until Blur and Phantom Strike cooldowns reset. Collapse on her with full physical damage output while she is Broken or while your MKB carrier focuses fire.
High-armor heroes should absorb PA’s initial Phantom Strike focus when possible. If your squishy carry takes the blink without a peel response and no MKB, the outcome is predictably a dead carry. Rotating a support or initiator between PA and your carry during her attack speed window is the execution skill that separates winning teams from teams that repeatedly lose to PA in late-game fights. If you are consistently on the wrong end of this exchange and want to understand why, reviewing these decisions with a professional coach builds faster intuition than solo replay analysis.
Draft Strategy Against PA
Drafting against Phantom Assassin is cleaner than against most hard carries because her threat model is entirely physical single-target. She does not deal magical burst, does not have a global ultimate, and does not push objectives efficiently. Her power is concentrated in assassination. Draft around shutting that down.
- At least one hero who builds MKB naturally (carry or mid)
- At least one Break application — Silver Edge carry or Fan of Knives Scepter awareness
- A high-armor offlane or support to absorb Phantom Strike target selection
- A reliable stun or hex with short cast time to intercept Phantom Strike animation
- Avoid heroes who rely on Breakable evasion passives if PA may buy Aghanim’s Scepter, as Fan of Knives applies Break in AoE
The most common drafting mistake against PA is over-drafting soft counters — heroes who slow her or deal magic damage — while leaving your physical damage carry without True Strike. A Bane who chains Fiend’s Grip for 5 seconds still loses the fight if the carry converting the lockdown is missing 55% of attacks without MKB. Address the item counter first. Adjust hero selection second.
Do not stack five PA counters. MKB on your carry plus one Break effect is sufficient in most games. Every additional counter pick beyond that costs you overall team composition strength. Pick strong heroes who can buy MKB naturally — agility carries with item flexibility — rather than weak heroes who counter PA specifically but struggle in the rest of the game.
