How to End Games Without Throwing High Ground
Throwing high ground is the most demoralizing way to lose a game you were winning. You have spent 35 minutes building a gold advantage, taking objectives, and positioning your team for a close. Then you walk up the ramp, your carry dies to a desperate last-ditch fight from the enemy under their own high ground defense bonus, and the enemy buys back their entire team and runs your base while your team is on respawn timers. Games that should take 38 minutes become 55-minute losses.
The high ground throw is not a mechanical failure — it is a decision failure. The mechanical execution of a high ground push is simple: walk up the ramp, apply DPS, break the barracks. The decision failures are what makes high ground dangerous: pushing without vision, pushing with the wrong initiator, pushing when the enemy has buybacks, or pushing when an alternative close exists that is significantly safer. This guide covers all of these decision failures with the specific situational markers that tell you when the push is safe versus when it needs a different approach.
All recommendations below are optimized for the mid-to-late game scenario where your team has a meaningful advantage. If you are pushing high ground from a deficit or neutral state, the risk calculus changes significantly and some of the guidelines below do not apply.

Why High Ground Throws Happen
High ground throws fall into five identifiable patterns. Most teams at Archon through Divine cycle through these same patterns repeatedly — which means understanding the pattern is the first step to eliminating it from your games.
Pattern 1: Impatience After a Win
The most common high ground throw trigger is a won teamfight that creates momentum toward a push before the team is actually ready. The enemy team just lost four heroes, the carries are excited, and the team moves toward high ground immediately without checking buyback statuses, team health levels, or whether the enemy’s defensive abilities are on cooldown. The enthusiasm of a won fight is a cognitive bias that overrides the rational push checklist. Professional players counteract this by building a post-fight routine into their team communication — specifically, a deliberate 15-second review window before any post-fight push decision is made.
Pattern 2: Failure to Account for High Ground Vision
High ground provides a significant vision advantage to the defending team. Your team walking up the ramp has reduced vision of the high ground area above the ramp crest, while the defenders have full vision of you approaching. Without a ward or Scan placed on the high ground before the push, the defending team can position their heroes in optimal defensive formations — like Earthshaker sitting behind the barracks waiting to Fissure the ramp behind your team after you crest it, trapping your team on the high ground with the defenders.
Pattern 3: Ignoring Enemy High Ground Defense Heroes
Some heroes are disproportionately effective on high ground defense: Earthshaker (Fissure blocks the ramp behind the attacking team), Tidehunter (Ravage in a confined space is devastating), Ancient Apparition (Aghanim’s Ice Blast prevents recovery from burst damage), and Jakiro (Macropyre covers the ramp width entirely). When the enemy team has one or more of these heroes and your team pushes without accounting for their defensive positioning, the push fails not because of gold disadvantage but because the mechanical matchup favors the defense.
Pattern 4: Partial Team Push
Partial team pushes — four heroes push while one farms, or three push while two return to base — are significantly weaker than five-man pushes because the defense can focus resources on the smaller attack group. Partial team pushes also create timing issues: if the pushing heroes fail and need to retreat, the hero who is farming cannot rotate to assist fast enough to prevent the enemy from converting the defense into a counter-push. Five-man commitment is not negotiable for high ground — partial commitment is partial commitment to losing the scenario.
Pattern 5: Wrong Lane Selection
Teams frequently push the lane where their carry is strongest (often mid) rather than the lane where the enemy defense is weakest (which may be top or bottom depending on the game state). A tier 3 tower with full health and the enemy team well-positioned for defense is a significantly harder push than a tier 3 that is already at half health from a previous tower aggression. Check all three lanes before selecting a push target — the optimal high ground push may not be the lane you instinctively gravitate toward.
The Pre-Push Checklist

Before committing to a high ground push, run through these five gates. Pass all five before walking up the ramp. Any failed gate requires either delaying the push or taking an alternative objective instead.
Gate 1: Buyback Status
Every dead enemy hero’s buyback availability should be accounted for before pushing. Check the scoreboard. If three or more enemy heroes are dead with buybacks available and their death timers show more than 30 seconds remaining, you have a buyback window — but it closes the moment those heroes decide to spend it. The push should be timed to reach the barracks before the first buyback can arrive and set up a coherent defense, which requires moving immediately rather than farming the remaining creeps on the map before approaching. If the enemy carry has buyback available and is not dead, the push requires extreme commitment — all five heroes must dedicate to ending the game in this push before the carry can position for the defense fight.
Gate 2: High Ground Vision
The high ground above the ramp you plan to push must have a ward or Scan active before your team steps onto the ramp. If the high ground is dark, you are walking into a one-way information scenario where the defense can see everything you do and you cannot see their positioning. A 6-minute observer ward placed on the high ground ledge or a 75-gold Scan that covers the push area is mandatory pre-push investment. This is a support’s job to execute during the post-fight window before the push begins.
Gate 3: Team Health and Mana
All five heroes should be at minimum 60% HP and sufficient mana for one full ability rotation before stepping onto the ramp. Heroes below 60% HP die to a single focus-fire exchange on high ground, where the defense has positional advantage and the attacking team cannot kite backward without losing ramp access. If multiple heroes are below 60%, return to base or take a tier 2 objective instead. The exception is an emergency push where the enemy team has just wiped and no buybacks are available — in that scenario, push regardless of HP, but this requires five heroes committed, not partial team.
Gate 4: Smoke or Approach Path
A Smoke of Deceit applied before ramp approach gives your team the ability to walk up the ramp without the tower aggroing until you break Smoke at the tower range. This eliminates the early tower damage that can chunk your carries before the fight begins. If your supports do not have Smoke, approach the ramp from an angle that minimizes tower range exposure (approaching from the jungle-side of the ramp rather than the open-lane-side often reduces early tower hits on squishy heroes).
Gate 5: Win Condition Hero Ready
Your team’s primary high ground win condition hero must have their key ability available. If your win condition is Faceless Void’s Chronosphere, the push happens when Chrono is off cooldown. If your win condition is your carry reaching a 25,000 net worth power spike that outclasses the enemy defensive carries, the push happens at that net worth threshold. Pushing the ramp before your win condition hero is ready is committing to a fight your team is structurally not prepared to win.

Ramp Execution: How to Walk Up Correctly
Passing the pre-push checklist does not guarantee the push succeeds — the execution on the ramp itself is a distinct skill that separates successful pushes from failed ones.
Tanky Hero Leads the Ramp
The hero with the highest effective HP should be the first hero to crest the ramp. This is typically the offlaner (Axe, Centaur, Mars) or a tanky carry (Dragon Knight, Wraith King). The tanky front-liner absorbs the initial defensive burst from the defending team and the tower, buying the DPS heroes behind them the time needed to reach effective range. Sending a carry or support first up the ramp — which happens frequently at sub-Immortal when players rush the push — results in the squishy hero dying before the fight can be established and the defense immediately having a numbers advantage.
Do Not Spread on the Ramp
Spreading out across the ramp width is a defensive formation, not an offensive one. On offense, you want to maintain proximity so your support spells (heals, Force Staff escapes, Glimmer capes) can reach any hero quickly. Spread positioning on the ramp means that when the Earthshaker fires a Fissure behind your team, the heroes on the edges may survive while the heroes in the center are trapped. Keep your formation tight until the front-liner is past the ramp crest and has established a foothold on the high ground plateau.
Tower Dive Commitment
Once your team is on the high ground, commit to the dive. Partial dives — where some heroes walk back down the ramp when the fighting gets intense — are worse than full commits because they reduce your effective fighting strength at the critical moment when the defense is most vulnerable. If the pre-push checklist was passed, trust the process and commit fully. The exception is an abort signal from your watcher (the support monitoring the minimap for enemy hero movements) — a specific abort signal requires immediate retreat, not individual discretion.
Buyback Management During the Push
Buyback management during a high ground push is a real-time information challenge. Multiple things are happening simultaneously: your team is in a fight, heroes on both sides are dying, and the enemy may be spending buybacks to return to the fight. Designating one support as the buyback tracker — whose sole job during the fight is monitoring the death timer panel for enemy buyback events — provides the information needed to know whether to continue pressing or abort to safety.
The Buyback Counter-Push Pattern
The most common high ground throw involves the following sequence: attacking team fights on high ground, kills two or three defenders, one defender buys back, the attacking team continues fighting thinking they have the advantage, the remaining defenders plus the buyback hero re-engage, and the attacking team’s carry dies without buyback capability (used it on the approach fight). The defending team now has superior numbers and uses the counter-push to run the base. This pattern is preventable by having the buyback tracker call any buyback event immediately and having the team either accelerate to finish barracks before the buyback hero arrives or begin an orderly retreat.
Aegis Prioritization in High Ground Fights
The Aegis carrier (typically your carry) should be the last hero to die in a high ground fight. The Aegis’s value is maximized when it allows the carry to survive a burst that would otherwise end the fight in the enemy’s favor. Using Aegis on the front-line tanky hero (who can often survive without it through their natural durability) wastes the Aegis charge on a hero whose survival is less game-critical. Position the Aegis carrier behind the tanky front-liner on the ramp — close enough for full fighting contribution but behind the natural damage absorber.
Alternative Closes When High Ground Is Too Risky
When the pre-push checklist fails one or more gates, the team needs an alternative close mechanism. These alternatives are not consolation prizes — some of them are more efficient than a high ground push in specific scenarios.
Mega Creep Farming via Barracks Destruction
If your team has already destroyed one set of barracks, the resulting Mega Creeps do significant incremental damage to the enemy base over time. The highest-efficiency alternative to a risky high ground push is farming the next creep wave with your Mega Creeps plus your team in a safe position, then letting the Mega Creep advantage compound over 5-10 minutes while the enemy struggles to clear waves. The enemy must respond to Megas, which creates multiple push angles and forces them to split resources between defending several lanes simultaneously. This is slower than a direct push but significantly lower-risk when the gate conditions are not met.
Split Pushing with a Dedicated Pusher
Heroes with strong solo push capability (Nature’s Prophet, Lycan, Broodmother, Lone Druid) can create a parallel threat that forces the enemy to respond with multiple heroes, opening a five-man push opportunity on a different lane. This works when the enemy team cannot both stop the split push and defend a lane push simultaneously — which they typically cannot if the split pusher is producing enough threat per unit of time. The limitation is that it extends the game length and gives the enemy time to farm into power spikes that close the gold gap.
Roshan and Cheese Timing
If Roshan is available (either first kill of the game or respawned after a previous kill), taking Roshan before high ground creates an additional Aegis for your team and potentially a Cheese item. Cheese in a high ground fight is extremely powerful because it provides a full HP/Mana restore in the middle of the fight, effectively giving your team an additional life in a fight where life totals are the primary resource. If Roshan is available and the gate conditions are not met for a direct push, Roshan first is almost always the correct alternative.
Hero-Specific High Ground Roles
Each hero on your team has a specific role in a high ground push, and understanding these roles before walking up the ramp improves push coordination significantly.
Initiators
Initiation on high ground requires engaging from a position of cover (a cliff, an angle, or behind the front-liner) and committing fully to the engage. Initiators should NOT initiate until the front-liner has confirmed the defensive positioning of the enemy team. A Magnus RP or Tidehunter Ravage fired into an unknown defensive formation that catches your own team is as bad as not initiating at all. The initiator’s job is to maximize the number of enemy heroes caught while minimizing friendly fire — this requires a brief reconnaissance before engaging.
Carries
The carry’s role during a high ground push is focused DPS on the barracks, not hero kills. Barracks destruction is the game-ending objective; hero kills are a means to enable barracks access. A carry who chases dying heroes across the high ground and abandons barracks damage is prioritizing secondary objectives at the cost of the primary one. The rule: always stay within attack range of the barracks while the fight is ongoing. Chase only when the fight is definitively won and the barracks destruction is being handled by your team.
Supports
Supports have three jobs in high ground pushes: pre-push vision placement (done before the push begins), buyback tracking during the fight (real-time communication of enemy buyback events), and high-ground survival assistance (Force Staff to remove caught allies, Glimmer Cape on the carry during burst focus-fire, Mekansm or Healing Lotus timing to prevent fight collapse before the barracks are destroyed). Supports should not be the heroes initiating the fight — that role belongs to the offlaner. Save your utility for the moments where it prevents a hero death that would turn the fight.
When to Abandon the High Ground Push Mid-Attempt
There are specific moments during a high ground push where the correct decision is immediate retreat rather than continued commitment. Recognizing these moments requires one designated hero (typically the support or offlaner) to be monitoring the fight state rather than tunnel-visioning on DPS output.
Abort signal 1: Two or more enemy heroes have bought back and are approaching the high ground within 30 seconds. Your team cannot fight the original defenders plus two buyback heroes at full HP — retreat immediately and regroup.
Abort signal 2: Your carry has died without Aegis and with buyback unavailable. Without the primary DPS hero, barracks destruction is unlikely within the current fight window. Retreat with the remaining heroes to prevent further deaths.
Abort signal 3: The defensive hero with the most dangerous high ground ability (Earthshaker Fissure, Tidehunter Ravage, Warlock Golem) has their ability available and is positioning to use it. If the Earthshaker has Fissure available and is behind your team, retreat before the ramp is blocked — forced onto the high ground with Fissure cutting off your retreat is an almost certain wipe.
